COURSE GUIDE TOPIC GRAMMAR EXPECTED TIME

OF WORK
English IV 6 POSSIBLE Zero and First
EVENTS IN THE conditional 8 hours
FUTURE
when and other time
words.

1. OBJECTIVES

 To learn and practice the Zero and first conditional structures.

 To use WHEN, IF and other conjunctions for making conditional structures.
 To learn and practice vocabulary using zero and first conditional.
 To learn about Green Cities and the benefits they could bring to humanity

2. PRESENTATION:

Dear student,

In this guide you will learn to identify and use the zero and first conditional structures. When using
these structures, you will be able to express both factual implications and possibilities in the present
or near future. Besides, these structures will use When, As Soon As, Before, as linking words to
complete the ideas in the different sentences. For closing the contents and the activities proposed for
this guide, you will have the chance to develop your final product based on Green Cities.

This guide covers two weeks of work. It is divided into four hours of independent work per week. If
you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask your teacher.

3. INITIAL REFLECTION:
This is Masdar city, a city from a possible future. What do you think we need to do in order to live in a
place like this?

4. APPROPRIATION:

Dear student, this guide is just a tool for you to develop and learn a very important subject such as
zero and first conditionals. Feel free to ask for a tutorial session if you think you need support to
overcome the shortcomings you find throughout this guide.

Your teacher is always ready and willing to help. Don´t hesitate to contact him/her.

Let’s Get Down to Business!

YOU CAN USE OTHER CONJUNCTIONS INSTEAD OF IF.

You can use conjunctions of time, like WHEN, BEFORE, AFTER, AS SOON AS, or UNTIL, instead
of if in the if-clause.
Using these conjunctions means that the situation goes from possible to definite or for sure.

WHEN
I’ll wash the dishes when my TV show is over.
I’ll come inside when it gets dark.
He’s going to be a policeman when he’s older!
Call me when you get home.

BEFORE
I’ll finish this report before I leave tonight.
Please take the garbage out before you go to work today.
He’ll call you before he goes out tonight.

AFTER
I’ll eat dinner after I finish my homework
After she graduates from university she’ll need to find a job!
Tell me what you think of the movie after you see it!

UNTIL
I’ll sit outside until it gets dark.
I will keep looking for my car keys until I find them!
We’ll wait until the rain stops, then we’ll go outside.

AS SOON AS
I’ll wash the dishes as soon as this TV show is over.
Call me as soon as you get in.
We’ll start the meeting as soon as the CEO arrives.
The band will start playing as soon as everyone arrives.

LISTENING and VOCABULARY ACTIVITY

CLASS PRESIDENT
Listen to six students say what they will do if they are class president. (Annex Number: XXX)

SCRIPT
Bob
If you elect me student body president, I will provide you with the best parties you have ever seen.
The school has already focused on education. We've already been focused on sports, but I will
provide with parties that no one has seen before. Parties in important for student life because if we
don't have good parties, how can we enjoy our education and our studies. Elect me student
president, and I promise to fulfill your needs students.

MJ
Dear fellow students, this is MJ. If you guys vote me as the representative of this university, I will
definitely promise you more vacation. We have too much classes on one week, and we have a
shorter vacation during the summer. For example, right now we have sixty days of vacation in the
summer, but I will promise you to increase to eighty. Please vote me for the representative of this
school. Thank you.

Ben
Dear students, if you elect me as student body president, I will make sure that we have a cheaper
way to come to school, because right now, coming to school, transportation by bus is way too
expensive and dealing with the economic problem's right now, I think we can definitely do with a
cheaper mode of transportation, so ... and also for services, it's not good at all, and I think that we
should push for better services and a cheaper deal.

Susan
Well, I hear from a lot of people that there are not enough good teachers at this school, and workers
at the office are not helpful at all, so if you choose me for student body president, I will meet with the
president to relay the problems so that you can start to hire better staff, because I think education is
the most important thing in this world. That's why you guys are at school, right? So, vote me now?

Julio
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, today I wanted to talk to you about the conditions in your cafeteria. It is
outrageous, that we have to pay twice as much for a place to salad, then for a place of fried chicken.
Universities should promote health, and our university is not doing so. There is a lot of people who
are visiting our campus and, in the world, today more people die of obesity than from cigarette or
alcohol related diseases. If I get elected into president, I would vow to change the conditions in our
cafeteria and make health food available for everyone at reasonable prices.

Mary
My fellow students, we have a problem. There are no books in our library. The library is a very
interesting place, which I'm sure you'll all use very regularly when you want to go to sleep, when it's
very cold and you wanted a heated place, but this university is an academic institution, and every now
and again, I like to be able find a book in there. I walk into the library, and I look left and there are
empty shelves. I walk into the library and I look right and there are more empty shelves. I'd like to be
president of this campus next year, and I will get some books for this library.
