RPG Engine 075a
RPG Engine 075a
75 alpha
This program is not an actual game. It demonstrates the engine in development for a huge
computer role-playing game "The Buried Curse" made with MS Excel VBA.
Controls: use numeric keypad or arrow keys to move, space or mouse right-click to view or
activate objects. Mouse "click and go" movement is possible, although pathfinding is very
rudimentary at the moment and often gets confused.
IMPORTANT!
The engine blocks all keys and reads keyboard via API functions. If VBA code is
interrupted (by error, pressing Ctrl+Break, and so on) the keyboard may remain blocked.
Run macro "Unlock_Keys" or press "Stop engine" button to restore the functionality of the
keyboard.

Well, I have been working as alchemist for almost twenty years. Before that I
was married to the owner of a small distillery in Devix, but he died aged 32. I
moved here eleven years ago, while Baloock Mine was still operational and

After the mine was abandoned, eight years ago, I decided to stay here

On the other hand, some people may harvest this plant for years and never
meet any lost spirits, since ghosts or specters are very rare and usually
associated with places of not revenged murder and so on rather than regular
cemeteries.
Another explanation refers to the shape of howling beet root, which often
features one large oval hole and two smaller ones. Some people claim that
such roots resemble a face of a crying human, and that’s the main reason the
beet is named "howling". The explanation looks reasonable, although it
requires some imagination to associate the three-holed root with the human
face.

"Giant Spiders"
by Roederick
Giant spiders are the most common of many strange creatures that dwell in
caves and underground labyrinths. There are many situations when popular
animals have their enlarged and dangerous counterparts: rats and giant rats,
cats and panthers and so on, but giant spiders are probably the most
extreme example of this phenomenon.
While regular spiders are rarely greater than three inches, the giant one
could be almost four feet tall and six feet wide. Their chitin armor is as hard
as steel breastplate, and their claws are sharp as well-tempered sword. Their
bites can be very painful, but fortunately, they are only mildly poisonous -
such beast simply do not need poison to deal with most preys.
Most animals guards their eggs fiercely battling any intruders, and giant
spiders are no exception. If you want to collect some eggshells, be prepared
to face a group of this dangerous creatures. First, make sure you have the
proper weapon...

TEXT
Wandering through the vast Silver Forest, you ended up in its lesser known
South region.
The area seems quite peaceful, but your intuition tells you, that such
tranquillity may be misleading, and there is a good chance for an interesting
adventure or two here...
You are standing before a deep dark hole in the rock. It seems that the ladder
to the mine has been destroyed. You need a strong rope or a levitation spell
to get down to the mine.
Using a sturdy rope received from Crissa, you will be able to safely climb
down to the mine and explore its remains.

Hello, young traveller!
I am Crissa the Alchemist and I run a small laboratory here, as well as train
alchemy apprentices from time to time. What are you doing in this forgotten
part of Silver Forest?
Well, I wandered off the main road. What can you tell me about this place?
Tell me about yourself.
At the moment, this part of South Silver Forest is very peaceful and almost
uninhabited, but some time ago it was a lively place. To the Southeast, you
will find the remains of Ballock mine which was closed eight years ago. It
was a small mine, built on a shallow natural cave, very rich in iron ore but
also quite dangerous.
Further to the East, you may visit find Falcar Valley - a tiny valley of a spring
that dried up centuries ago. There was a large sawmill there, but it was
abandoned soon after the mine had been closed, as they shared the same
owner.
Finally, straight to the South you may find a house that was owned by the
Glermon family who ran the mine, but it was sold two years ago to a shady
character named Ker-Goran. I have no idea what he is doing there, as he
doesn't like anyone to mess around his property.
Well, I have been working as alchemist for almost twenty years. Before that I
was married to the owner of a small distillery in Devix, but he died aged 32. I
moved here eleven years ago, while Ballock Mine was still operational and
offered them some healing services.

merchants who drop by every few weeks to buy some elixirs. Every year I
train one or two apprentices, not for the money, just to kill the boredom.
Currently, I am training Dremec, a young lad from Red Spirport, you can find
him near the southern house.
To tell the truth, I have no idea of any job I could offer you now. If I need a
door repaired or some wood cut, I ask my apprentice Dremec. Anyway, you
do not look like someone seeking such trivial work. Oh well, what kind of job
you are really looking for?
See you later!
I am an adventurer and a fearless fighter: any chance of bashing evil critters,
undead or the like?
Any job that requires tough muscles, or clever brain, or both...
Oh, never mind...
Well, I must disappoint you then, but there are no monsters here, even as
common as wolves. Only rabbits, lizards and similarly-sized stuff.
As you wish...
Crissa The Alchemist asked me to retrieve silver ring from the guy named
Ker-Goran. He keeps this ring somewhere in his house.
Oh right, let me think… There is indeed one thing you could do, but it may be
rather difficult and require some subterfuge. There is a large house to the
South, now owned by strange unpleasant guy named Ker-Goran.
A fellow merchant told me that Ker-Goran owns a silver ring with the
engraved crest of the Glermon family, the previous owners of that house. If
you could retrieve the ring and bring it to me, I will show you how to get to
abandoned Ballock Mine - you could find valuable equipment left by the
miners there.
By the way - Ker Goran does not wear this ring on his finger. It must be
hidden somewhere in his house.
But why do you need this ring?
Tell me more about Ker-Goran.
Tell me more about Ker-Goran.
I'll see what I can do...
Well, I suspect that Ker-Goran became the owner of that house in some
dishonest way, but I have no evidence. This ring could serve as a proof in my
investigation.
I don't know much about him, as he prefers to live undisturbed and doesn't
want anyone to approach his house. He looks like a retired officer or
bodyguard, and seems to be quite well-off. I have no idea why he decided to
live in this region, as he really doesn't fit here.

I wish you good luck.
What can you tell me about Dremec.
Oh, he has been my apprentice for two months now. He is clever, but rather
lazy, as most young men nowadays. Anyway, I think he has some inclination
towards alchemy and I am satisfied with his progress overall. But don't tell
him about it, as it may make him even more lazy than he is now.
I managed to retrieve the ring from Ker-Goran.
I retrieved the Glenmor family ring for Crissa. She gave me the rope, so I will
be able to climb down the Ballock Mine and explore its remains.
Good job!
Let me see it... It's a so called "master ring" owned by the head of the family.
It's very strange that Ker-Goran possessed it! I will inform my trusted friend
in The City Council about that, and I am pretty sure that it will all end with
Ker-Goran landing in jail.
I promised to help you to get to Ballock Mine. Take this rope. It will allow you
to safely climb down into the mine. The mine was left in a hurry, after one of
the tunnels collapsed, so you will be able to find many useful items that still
remain there. Thank you again for you help, I wish you good luck in your
travels!
Nice to see you again.
[you can see a skinny young man, slowly crunching herbs in bronze mortar]
Hello, traveller! Nice to see you here. I am Dremec, I am an alchemy
apprentice. Crissa, my teacher lives in a nearby house. What brings you to
this part of the forest.
What is this place?
Tell me about yourself.
What can you tell me about Crissa?
Do you know Ker-Goran?
I must be leaving. See you!
This is a rather forgotten part of the Southern Silver Forest. Crissa calls it
peaceful, but I prefer to call it boring. Did you know that you have to walk ten
miles to get to the closest inn and drink some decent beer! Not to say, if you
want to dance or gamble, that's a problem.
I am from Red Spirport, you know, the small port in the West, adjacent to
much larger Spirport. Most people think that the "Red" in the name of my
town refers to the color of the rocks the harbor is built on. Well, that's the
official version. I think the place is named this way, because of the
abundance of brothels with cheap... Oh, never mind.
Anyway, in my town the choice is simple - you either stay there and become
a sailor, or leave it and find some better job. I always liked those alchemy
and magical tricks, so my uncle helped me to become an apprentice here.
Well, she was recommended as a good teacher by my uncle, that's why I
ended up here and not somewhere else. She is a bit stern and demanding,
but just. I think she likes me, even if she frequently complains about my
carelessness.
Oh well, I don't like this guy. Truth to tell, I even hate him. He lives in a nice
house to the South. Crissa may tell you more about this building and its
previous owners, as she has been living here for years.
Anyway, I once went near his house to collect some gloomgrass growing on
the shore of a nearby lake. Ker-Goran saw me, he started cursing and
ordered me to get out of there. He even threw a stone, hitting me in the back!
What a stupid bastard! When I learn to make flame bombs, I'll return there
and kick his miserable ass!
By the way - I am pretty sure he was a thug, possibly a bodyguard or a
bouncer in some shoddy inn or gambling parlor. I saw many such guys in my
home town, Red Spirport.
Hello! How are you?
You want to be alchemist, you could try to brew the beer yourself...
Oh, that's a clever idea, it won't be difficult to get some malt and yeast here,
getting hops may be a problem, though. Anyway, thanks for the interesting
idea!
Have a nice day!
[you can see a bald middle-aged man with some scars on his face, dressed
in studded leather jacket]
Get out of here, stranger! Haven't you see the sign!
Sign... what sign? You have a nice house here...
Do you happen to own a nice silver ring with engraved crest?
Oh right. I will go now.
The road sign. It reads "Keep out!". Do you understand now?!
Don't play with my patience, leave this place immediately!
Engraved ring, what the hell are you taking about. Get out of here, or I'll
engrave your face with my dagger!
Wise decision!
This building looks like it has been abandoned for many years. Some of its
thin sandstone walls have crumbled, the rest are in poor condition. It
probably served as a miners' dormitory. The beds and other furniture are
rotten or simply broken.
You are approaching an old burial ground. The location of this cemetery is
rather unusual, as there are no signs of any village or other estate nearby.
The tombstones must be at least fifty years old and are partly broken and
illegible.
[you can see a middle-aged well dressed tall man with a mule carrying
various packs]
Hello, traveller!
I am Arkir, the wandering merchant. Maybe you would like to buy something -
I have many useful items at reasonable prices? I can also repair some of
your equipment, if needed.
Tell me more about yourself?
What are you doing in this area - it's difficult to find customers here, isn't it?
Let's see what you have for sale...
Do you know something about the guy named Ker-Goran who lives here?
I must go. Farewell.
See you later!
I've been working as a wandering merchant for five years now, before I was
a blacksmith, a mercenary and a shopkeeper in Almya. It's seems that I could
not stay long in one place so I choose this job, even if it's not as profitable as
a regular workshop. I sell various basic stuff, nothing fancy, but things
journeymen need most - weapons, food, lanterns... Since I was a blacksmith,
I also carry tools that allows to repair weapon and armour - this is unusual
skill for a wandering seller, and allows to make some additional money.
I rarely visit this area, once a year maybe. Crissa The Alchemist lives here,
and she supplies me with some potions which I re-sell with good profit
margin in the cities.
Right, let's barter!

These tables are used for mapping Virtual-Keys to X_KeyR variable used by game engine to determine action.
For example, ArrowUp (Vkey 0x26) and Numpad8 (Vkey 0x68) both sets the value of X_KeyR to 3.
The table also determines the priority of Virtual Keys (which one to choose, if player presses two or more keys).
