TIME ANALYSIS – CODING SHEET

Teacher: Alicia Zehr Coder: Anna Nelsen Date: 3/10/11 Grade: ______ Lesson Content: ___________

Purpose: To describe how students spend their time during a lesson

Description of Instrument: Each time block (1-48) represents one minute divided into six 10-second
intervals.
Method of Coding: Interval recording -- observing behaviors of individual students OR a group for short units
of time, and then recording the behavior that best characterizes that time-interval
Directions: Observe, Record, Observe, Record. Observe an individual student (or group) for TEN seconds. Use
the next five seconds to record your observation as I, A, M in each box starting from the top left.
Note: There are various approaches to interval coding. You will either observe ONE student for the full
duration of the lesson, or select two students (1 high-skilled, 1 low-skilled) and observe each for half the lesson.
Instruction (I): Student(s) are receiving information on the lesson content
Activity (A): Student(s) are actively engaged in the lesson content
Management (M): Student(s) are engaged in or listening to instructions related to organizational
arrangements of people, equipment, space, or time that support lesson content. Students are engaged through
activity or listening to instructions related to expectations for conduct. Students are not engaged as directed by
the teacher.
