Importance of food:

Digestive System breaks food down:
- Spans from mouth to anus

Beginning of Digestion: The
Buccal Cavity, Pharynx, and
Epiglottis
Buccal cavity:
- Teeth break down food
- Saliva moistens food
Pharynx:
- Membrane lined cavity (throat)
Epiglottis:
- Blocks food from going in windpipe

The Esophagus, Larynx and
Trachea
Esophagus:
- Muscular tube
- Contractions push food to stomach
Larynx
- Vocal cords
- Air passage
Trachea:
- “Windpipe”
- Carries air to lungs

The Stomach and Diaphragm
Stomach:
- Glands make stomach acid and enzymes
- Muscles move around food
Diaphragm:
- Contracts with inhale and exhale
- Helps get rid of vomit, urine, and feces
- Prevents acid reflux

Small Intestine and Duodenum
Small intestine:
- Creates digestive juice
- Three sections
Duodenum:
- Produces hormones
- Receives secretions

Jejunum and Ileum
Jejunum:
- Absorbs amino acids, sugars, and fatty acids
Ileum:
- Absorbs excess nutrients

Pancreas, Liver, and Gallbladder
Pancreas:
- Digestive juice breaks down things
- Delivers juice to small intestine
Liver:
- Bile digests fats and vitamins
- Bile goes to gallbladder or small intestine
Gallbladder:
- Stores bile between meals
- Bile squeezed through ducts to small intestine

Appendix:
- Bit of a mystery

Cecum, Large Intestine, and
Rectum
Cecum:
- Pouch in beginning of large intestine
- Connects colon and large intestine
Large Intestine:
- Bacteria breaks down remaining nutrients
- Waste becomes stool
Rectum:
- Last part of large intestine
- Opens up to anus
