In this experience we are going to learn and read about birds. We will start by reading the book
“A House for Birdie” written by Stuart J. Murphy and illustrated by Edward Miller.
In this book, Birdie has no house and has to brave the elements. One day Birdie
asked his friends for help. His friends are tall and narrow; tall, fat, and wide;
short, fat, and wide; and the last was short, thin, and narrow. They fly around to
look at the different houses and see which one would be best for Birdie. As they
fly around they find houses that are a perfect fit for his friends, but not for him.
On the next rainy day his friends noticed that he was out in the rain. They work
This book is about learning math skills such as size, capacity and volume, however it also
explains friendship and how friends come together to help each other. As we read this book we
will discuss the different sizes of each bird and each house that the birds find along the way.
We will also discuss how these birds work together and in the end take care of Birdie.
