Video Analysis #2

Introduction to Special Education 203

The YouTube video provides information about the grade level and subject. The students

are a second grade Reading class. It does not provide information that the course is a Special

Education class, or the instructor is a Special Education teacher.

According to the content below, the video was uploaded by the Massachusetts DESE

(Department of Elementary and Secondary Education). Massachusetts is a state in the United

States of America.

Most of the classroom design was obscured by one object: a table. The video mostly

showcased one half-circular table. One side had the students, and the other sat the teacher. It was

evenly spaced so they can have a bit of room for their book and papers.

The teacher appeared to have classroom management. The students were listening to her

instructions and they were not interrupting the reading. The students appear comfortable with the

teacher.

The students were engaged in the lesson given by the teacher. The teacher provided

reading about deserts and their wildlife. The students were eager to learn more and were excited

when the teacher brought a realistic prop to a group.

I did not see the teacher use Assistive Technology or hands-on Technology such as Smart

Boards, Elmo’s, projectors, calculators, or etcetera. She used books and paper to assign the

reading and ‘ticket out the door.’ She did bring a prop for the students to feel and have a sense of

idea about the wildlife.

There was group learning in the video. Group learning is individually working in small

groups to article ideas with each other and come to an agreement (Group Learning). The teacher

split the class into two groups. The two groups were assigned different readings.

The teacher provided the students with a sheet where they fill out the information about

the book. She gave an assignment for the students to read for details and understand the

information the text supplied.

She created different strategies so the students can learn new words and fluency. In the

beginning, students read together. Then, they read in pairs. The teacher made sure each student

was reading and acquire equal time. If they struggle with a word or pronunciation, the teacher

was there to provide guidance. She gave each student praise for their efforts.

There was one student who was struggling with the assignment. While other students

turned in their work, he was provided extra time to finish. Another instructor was there to assist

in his struggles.
