8130 RTU Interface 3

Overview
The FuelsManager CommunicationsManager (CM) subsystem is responsible for
exchanging data between the DatabaseManager (DM) and external field devices
such as tank gauges and programmable logic controllers. In this application, the
CM uses the Coggins Model 8130 Remote Terminal Unit (RTU).
The configuration of the Model 8130 is accomplished through dialogs available
from the Whessoe Coggins 8130 RTU device driver. Configuration involves adding
an interface, entering data matching the field devices, and creating connections to
the FuelsManager DataManager database.
In this appendix, you learn how to configure, maintain, and edit the Model 8130
interface.
4 FuelsManager User’s Manual

General
The Model 8130 RTU has a variety of interface modules to connect with field
devices. These include discrete I/O, analog I/O, pulse accumulator, and intelligent
communications types. The firmware of the RTU inter-operates with the installed
interface modules to effect data acquisition and control required by the application.
Logical points in the RTU provide storage for configuration data needed by the
firmware to inter-operate with the interfaces and provide storage of input data
acquired from and output data issued to the device through the interface. The RTU
firmware revision defines the complement of points supported and their
functionality. Consult the applicable RTU documentation to become more familiar
with the RTU, available point functionality, and the configuration process.
An RTU configuration program, named ViewRTU, accompanies the 8130 RTU
Device Driver. This program is used to configure the RTU(s) prior to configuring
the RTU 8130 Device Driver. ViewRTU uses disk files to store the RTU
configuration. A file with extension DVR is a Device Version file and defines the
point data structure of the RTU firmware version. DVR files for all supported RTU
Versions are supplied with the installation. Normally there will be a single RTU
firmware version for the application. A file with extension RCF is an RTU
Configuration File, defines the points that have been created for the RTU, and stores
the data for each point. An RCF must exist for each RTU in the application. With
ViewRTU, the contents of the RCF file may be uploaded from the RTU or
downloaded to the RTU. A file with extension HEX is an image of the RTU
firmware and may be downloaded to the RTU using ViewRTU. Directories for the
RTU files are specified in the file Viewrtu.ini.
The 8130 RTU Device Driver interrogates the RTU to acquire data and sends it to
DataManager. DataManager sends command data to the 8130 RTU Device Driver
that is sent to the RTU. For data acquisition, the Device Driver and the RTU
support a Change-Of-State (COS) and a Scan method. With the COS method, the
RTU signals that new data is available and the driver requests the new data. With
the scan method, the driver periodically requests the data. The method used
depends upon the application. The driver is also capable of downloading the RTU
firmware and the RTU configuration. The driver is also capable of providing
communications for ViewRTU while concurrently communicating for
DataManager.
The 8130 RTU device driver provides configuration and maintenance made
available through a series of dialogs. These dialogs are found in the fmUSER
program under the Communications menu. The fmUSER menu bar is shown below:
8130 RTU Interface 5

The configuration process includes defining the 8130 RTU interface, the RTUs, and
associated devices of RTU. Configuration also includes assigning a
communications port and assigning I/O database points. These configuration
components are described in the Components of Communication section of the
Configuring Communications chapter.
Device Maintenance dialogs can be used to offer information for troubleshooting if
any errors occur. These dialogs can be used in accordance with the Model 8130
troubleshooting methods.
Before you start, make sure that the CommunicationsManager is not in SHUTDOWN
mode. Otherwise, the user will not be able to access the configuration and
maintenance dialogs. Refer to the System Menu section of the fmUSER Program
chapter for instructions on setting the CM mode.
