Course Code/ Course Title: U18CHI1202L / Engineering Chemistry

Laboratory Programme : B.E /B.Tech
Title of the Experiment : Estimation of Chloride by Argentometric Method.

OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT:

To estimate the amount of chloride present in the given water sample

using silver nitrate. You are provided with standard sodium chloride solution
of strength 0.02N.

SHORT PROCEDURE:
PRACTICE/TESTING

1. Name the sources of chlorides in water?

Chlorides are present in the water usually as sodium chloride,

magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride.

2. How the solution is neutralized if it is alkaline?

By titrating it against standard silver nitrate solution using potassium

chromate as an indicator.
TITRATION -1:

CALCULATIONS:

Volume of standard sodium chloride (V1) = 20 mL

Normality of standard sodium chloride (N1) = 0.02 N

Volume of Silver Nitrate (V2) = 20.5 mL

Normality of Silver Nitrate (N2) =

𝑁2 = 0.0195 N
Normality of Silver Nitrate = 0.0195 N
