Assessment #2 (Psychological Perspective of the Self)

Name: Gwynette P. De Guzman

Provide brief/concise answers (max of 200 words/item) to the following questions: (15 points each)

1. How would you relate the W. James’ concept of I-self and Me-self to the current
experience of flexible or online learning?

—With the current situation, which is the flexible or online learning, myself have
had thoughts about will I manage to survive my first year as an engineering
student? Or not? Due to the response of my thoughts regarding the current
problem we are facing, my I-self would often think that I would not be able to
cope up with the overflowing activities as well as it gives me an idea that I should
just give up in achieving my dreams. Yet, with the help of how my me-self
interpret the situation, instead of believing or clinging on to what my I-self thinks,
I felt so motivated and inspired to do better since it is what everyone expects me
to do. The Me-self provides a clearer point of view to our current situation in
which it suggests that regardless of how the I-self quickly reacts to how things
stand right now, it encourages me to prove how worthy myself is when it comes
to being successful in life.

2. Describe your IDEAL SELF. How would you make it congruent with your real self?

—As a child, I have always wanted to make my parents proud by being

successful in life. I also aspire to be someone whom my siblings would look up to
as well as be someone who’s capable of helping the needy. I believe that I would
be able to reach my aspirations in life if I exert a lot of effort in my studies along
with inspiring myself to do more and prove my worth more especially whenever I
fail or have mistakes. Additionally, having a “can-do” attitude really helps me in
coping up and adapting in the current situation. Regardless of what life throws at
me, I have to project a positive attitude in order to not be consumed by my
negative thoughts. Lastly, I have faith that I will be what I want if I refrain from
pressuring myself and just let myself rest whenever I feel really tired and drained.

3. What is the importance of intentionality, forethought, self-reflectiveness and self-

regulation in our daily lives? Give concrete personal experience/s.
—These four Core Features of Human Agency plays a significant role in
displaying a person's ability to govern or control their own lives. In our everyday
life, these are important since it enables us to adapt and adjust with the
metamorphosis of life and this reflects our individual capacity when it comes to
managing our own behavior efficiently and effectively. In my experience,
whenever some of my siblings or my friends disappoint me or not do the tasks I
have asked them to do, I always think of what course of actions I should do
before I react so that there will be no regrets in what I do. Self-regulating
practices allows me to think of how I should properly react to things that are
currently happening. These also help me in my future responses wherein I can
become someone who is aware and has control over with the decisions and
actions I make.

4. Do you agree on Carl Jung’s concept of archetypes which are embedded in our
collective unconscious? Justify your answer by citing a personal experience.

—Yes, just like how I often respond with having new friends. I am a friendly type
of a person yet I don’t give my trust easily. I usually observe first rather than
showing them instantly my true personality and qualities. For instance, during the
first month of my college year, I did not show my talkative and approachable
quality yet since I was afraid of receiving judgements from my classmates. Since,
being talkative means that I have a lot to share and I have a difficulty in stopping
especially if the person I am talking to is someone I am comfortable with, there is
a high chance that they will be either annoyed or they will hate me for talking too
much. Additionally, I frequently hide my approachable side since I am terrified of
disappointing people and/ or give them false information. Nevertheless, as time
pass by, I have learned to slowly show them my hidden attributes in order for me
to easily adapt with the environment.
