This document introduces a study on analyzing metonymy in Balinese song lyrics. It provides background that metonymy involves substituting a word for something associated with it. The study will focus on analyzing metonymy in three Raka Sidan songs. It aims to describe metonymy found and understand meanings for Balinese people. Data will be collected through analyzing song lyrics for words used as substitutions. Findings will be presented quantitatively using charts and percentages to summarize results.

Metonymy is traditionally defined as a process of substituting one word for another with which it is associated. The metonymy can be found in conversation, movie, novel and poetry, especially can be found in song lyrics. Furthermore, metonymy is not a process limited to lexical representation but also a process of textual representation. Panther and Thornburg (1998, 2003) call metonymies ‘natural inference schemas’ Besides in Raka Sidan song lyrics, the metonymy can be found in other song lyrics. In Ngalahi Gumi song lyric by Motifora Band, there are several words that indicated as metonymy, as in one of the lyrics such like sirep ring pesarean that has different meaning. The true meaning from the lyric is passed away. In this case, from one of the phenomenon as described above, the metonymy has a significant function in song lyrics. The metonymy in song lyrics gives more profound meanings to otherwise common ideas and objects. By using metonymy, the song lyrics will deliver a hidden meaning by substitute actual words. The song lyrics were taken as the analysis because Balinese song nowadays mostly used metonymy in the song lyrics and necessarily to analyze the real meaning of metonymy found in song lyrics. 1.2. Research Problems Based on the statement above, the researchers raise some subsidiary research problems as follows. 1. What metonymy sentences are found in Raka Sidan Song lyrics? 2. What the meaning of metonymy found in Raka Sidan song lyrics?
1.3. Aims of the Study
In the relation to the above problem statements, the researchers will formulate the following research objectives; 1. To describe the metonymy sentences found in Balinese Song lyrics 2. To know about the meaning of metonymy is acceptable for Balinese people
1.4. Research Method
These methods are able to represent meaning and to figure out the meaning of metonymy found in song lyrics. This part deals with method of the analyze the metonymy found in Raka Sidan song lyrics. It is divided into four parts, there are, data source, method and technique of collecting data, method and technique of analyzing data, method and technique of presenting data.
1.4.1 Data Source
In action to get the data, there are some of Raka Sidan song will be analyze, the song lyrics that use as data source will collect from the song below: 1. Raka Sidan – Song Brerong 2. Raka Sidan – Kenceng 3. Raka Sidan – Pak Bos
1.4.2 Method and Technique of Collecting Data
The data were collected in Raka Sidan song lyrics by using some methods, there are the methods used were collected data: 1. Reading, listening and observing the dialogue from the song lyrics. 2. Find the word or phrase that is used to stand in for another word. 3. Make sure that the words found are metonymy by find the real meaning of those words. 4. Collect all the metonymy found in Raka Sidan song lyrics and analyzing the real meaning of those words.
The technique of collecting data is by using content analysis.
1.4.3 Method and Technique of Analyzing Data
The data were analyzed by applying quantitative method. In way
to give more explanation and description about the metonymy found in Raka Sidan song lyrics, descriptive quantitative were applied as the technique of analyzing data.
1.4.4 Method and Technique of Presenting Data
The data can be summarized and presented in various forms. Pie
circle and percentage chose as the method of presenting data. The results on the summarized data were presented by using informal presentation.
1.5. Scope of the Study
This study focused on the metonymy found in Raka Sidan song lyrics. Based on the background of study mentioned, the data were identified to find the metonymy in Raka Sidan song lyrics. The study does not discuss the purpose of using metonymy in Raka Sidan song lyrics.
