UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM

B.Sc. Civil Engineering Second year 2020/21

WR 212 Open Channel Hydraulics
Tutorial 1
1. The velocity distribution in a rectangular channel of width B and depth of flow d was
approximated as v = ky in which k = a constant. Calculate the average velocity for the
cross-section, energy coefficients (energy correction coefficient)  and β

2. The following velocities were measured at the centerline of a very wide rectangular
channel of depth 120 mm. Find the mean velocity and energy correction factor .

y mm 0 3.0 10.0 15.0 20.0 40.0 60.0 80.0 100.0 120.0

v m/s 0 1.25 1.75 2.05 2.20 2.55 2.75 2.85 2.90 3.00

3. Find the discharge in a trapezoidal channel with a bed width of 10 m, side slopes 1:1
and depth of flow of 2.0 m under uniform flow condition. S = 0.0001 and n = 0.02. Also
find Chezy’s coefficient at this depth.

4. A sewer pipe is proposed to be laid on a slope of 1 in 2500 and is required to carry 1.5
m3/s. What size of a circular pipe should be used if the pipe has to flow half full and n =
0.015?
