Plateau protestors: ‘Black Lives Matter’

PHOTOS BY RAY MILLER-STILL

Hundreds of protestors — from the very young at their first demonstration to the well-
traveled who have been protesting systematic racism and police brutality since the
1960s — showed their support for Black Lives Matter last week. The protests appeared
overwhelmingly supported by those who were unable to attend and were largely without
incident, and what disagreements that were had were either handled peacefully by attendees
or by local police. In the top left, demonstrators held a silent protest at Dwight Garrett Park
on Saturday, June 6, laying face down with their hands behind their backs for nearly nine
minutes to represent the amount of time Minneapolis man George Floyd was pinned by the
neck by former police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25; pictured on the bottom left is Lizzy
Tolbert (on the far left), an EHS student who organized the demonstration. In the top right,
several dozen young Buckleyites gathered to show their support for the movement at the
state Route 410/state Route 165 intersection on June 3. Bottom right, protest organizer and

Local resident releases “Tahoma,” tells of Mount Rainier’s natural history

runs DEEP. When our lives get
busy, and the system is tilted
in our favor, it’s easy to look
past it. It’s more comfortable to
ignore it and stay in our bubble
of privilege. At yesterday’s
gathering, it took courage to
stand out there and say that
‘even though the system may
work fine for me, I am no

others that are drowned by it
everyday!’ That is a huge step
in the right direction.”
