Purpose of the Test:

To verify that the UPS's serial communication is working.
Pre-Conditions:
A serial data cable must be connected to the UPS.
The appropriate AC input voltage shall be applied to the UPS - see "AC input voltage verification".
Test Condition:
Send a "Y" to the UPS.
Pass/Fail Conditions:
The UPS shall pass if it responds "SM".
Indications / Comments:
Failure may indicate that the serial data cable is not connected/working.
Failure may indicate a general communications failure within the UPS.
It is acceptable to send the "Y" up to 5 times with a 70 ms or greater delay between characters.
Although the normal response time is 50 ms maximum to the "Y" command, an extra buffer of 20
ms has been added to allow more time between commands being sent to the UPS to prevent an
out of sync problem that may otherwise occur.
Step Title: Set Programming Mode

Sequence number: 70
Subassembly:

To prepare the UPS for subsequent tests.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS shall be in the smart communications mode.
Test Condition:
Send a "1" to the UPS, wait at least 1.5 seconds, then send a second "1" to the UPS.
The UPS shall pass if it responds "PROG" after the second "1" has been sent.
Step Title: Verify Output Voltage Setting

Verify output voltage is set to default.
Pre-Conditions:
Test Condition:
UXICH, UXI, XLI:
Send the UPS an "o". If the response is "230" then no further action is needed.
If the response is different from "230" then send a decrement (-) or increment (+) character.
Send an "o". If the response is not "230" continue to send the same decrement (-) or
increment (+) character until either "o" command is "230" or the original value for "o" has
been reached. In other words the response for the "o" has cycled through and reached the
same value as when it started.
XLTW:
XLJ models:
No action
XLT, RWRT5000XLU, RWRT8000XLU, RWRT10000XLU models:

The unit shall pass if the correct response is obtained.
Failure may indicate a bad or improperly programmed EEPROM.
Step Title: Verify Input Voltage Calibration

To verify the AC input voltage sensing circuits are calibrated correctly.
Pre-Conditions:
The appropriate AC input voltage shall be applied to the UPS. The input voltage will be recorded.
Test Condition:
Send an "L" to the UPS.
The UPS shall pass if the "L" response is within +/- 1.5% of the measured input voltage.
If the UPS fails, it may be recalibrated by the final test fixture (see Functional Test Specification
"Calibrate input voltage (Optional)" for procedure). This must be logged as a failure in the
database but can be marked as "Passed" on the quality assurance tag once the unit is
recalibrated.
Step Title: Set Battery Capacity to 100%

Sequence number: 100
Subassembly:
To set the battery capacity to 100% so that the capacity meter matches the battery.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS shall be in the programming mode - see "Set programming mode".
Test Condition:
Send a "Control-F" to the UPS.
The UPS shall pass if it responds "OK".
If the UPS responds with "NO" the UPS may have had a EEPROM write conflict. It is acceptable
to repeat this procedure once before failing the UPS.
This step is designed for the batteryless discharge case where the UPS has not been through a
recharge cycle. However, there is no harm in always executing this test regardless of the
discharge performed.
Step Title: LEDs / Beeper Test

Sequence number: 40
Subassembly:

To verify the operation of the front panel LED indicators and the beeper.
Pre-Conditions:
Test Condition:
Send an "A" to the UPS.
Display a message to the operator indicating what their response should be for passing, failing, or
repeating the test.
Pass if UUT responds to the "A" command with "OK".
The operator will visually check if all 16 front panel LEDs are lit while the UPS's beeper sounds.
The operator will indicate pass / fail for this visual / audio test.
If the operator fails to respond in 60 seconds, fail the test due to operator inactivity.
Operator will verify the leds are the correct color each led position.
If only some LEDs are on, the most likely cause is damaged or defective LEDs.

Step Title: Set Serial Number

Subassembly:

To enter the UPS's serial number into the EEPROM.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS shall be in the programming mode.
The UPS's serial number shall have been scanned from the bar code label.
Test Condition:
Send the UPS an "n" "=" followed by "xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is 14 characters
(no UPS restrictions) indicating the UPS's serial number.
If the UPS's serial number is not 14 characters, SPACEs (hex code 20) should be appended to fill
the 14 character requirement (no more, no less).
The UPS shall pass if it responds "OK" (the serial number will be verified later).
Following the "n" command, the UPS will generate the appropriate response which must be
accounted for with a 170 ms delay minimum before sending the "=" command. After sending the
"=" command, and between each character sent to the UPS, a 20 ms delay minimum should be
observed to guarantee that the UPS will not receive characters too quickly causing characters to
be overwritten.
If the UPS responds with "NO", the UPS had a EEPROM write conflict. It is acceptable to repeat
this procedure once before failing the UPS.
Step Title: Initiate Self Test

Pre-Conditions:
The UPS's output shall be energized.
Test Condition:
Send a "W" to the UPS.
Send "Q" to the UPS.
The UPS shall pass if it responds "OK".
Pass if the UPS responds "bit 4 is set to 1".
Failure may indicate that the UPS is in the wrong state.
The UPS may take up to 64 AC cycles (1.07 seconds at 60 Hz, 1.28 seconds at 50 Hz) to actually
transfer to inverter and commence the self test after receiving the "W" command.
Step Title: Verify Serial Number

Subassembly:

To verify the setting of the serial number in the EEPROM.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS's serial number shall have been scanned from the bar code label.
Test Condition:
Send an "n" to the UPS.
The UPS will pass if the "n" response is the UPS's serial number (appended with SPACEs if
necessary for the 14 character requirement).
Failure may indicate a bad EEPROM.
Step Title: Verify Manufacturing Settings
Subassembly:

To verify the setting of the UPS identification, last battery replacement date, and manufacture
date in the EEPROM.
Pre-Conditions:
Test Condition:
Send the UPS a "c", then an "x", and then an "m" (monitoring response from each command
separately).
The UPS shall pass if the "c" response is "UPS_IDEN", and the "x" response is a valid date in the
form 01-12/01-31/00-99 (2 numbers for each field), and the "m" response is a valid date in the
form 01-12/01-31/00-99 (2 numbers for each field).
Failure may indicate a bad EEPROM.
Step Title: Verify EEPROM Values

Subassembly:

To verify that the EEPROM is properly configured.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS shall be in the programming mode.
Test Condition:
Send the UPS a ">" and then a "%" (monitoring response from each command separately).
The UPS shall pass if the ">" response is "001" and the "%" response is "00".
Failure may indicate that the EEPROM was not properly cleared or is bad.
The values tested for here could lead to field failures but are hard to test for in other ways. The
">" command is the number of external battery packs. The other command is used for debug
purposes and should not be changed under normal circumstances.
Step Title: Verification of fully loaded output voltage on inverter

Program: Lynx II
Part Number of UUT: FJRT5000XLJ3U, NECRT5000XLJ3U, SURT1000XLI,
Subassembly:

To verify that the UPS will supply the specified output voltage under full load.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS must be on Inverter from Battery (during the self-test is acceptable) for a minimum of 2
seconds before this test commences.
The appropriate computer type load must be applied to the output.
The output test plug must be plugged into an outlet on the back of the UPS.
Test Condition:
Send a "Q" to the UPS.
Measure the RMS output voltage (between hot and neutral).
The UPS shall pass if it responds "10" or "50", and the output voltage is between the limits set in
Output voltage limits under 100% load ->
Failure for low output voltage may indicate an incompletely charged battery.
If the output voltage does not meet the specification, it is acceptable to measure it a second time
before failing the UPS.
The 2 second delay is required to allow the output voltage to stabilize.

It is not necessary for this test to check the UPS-Link "O" command. If the UPS's output voltage
measurement is not accurate, it will either shut down with a fault or will not regulate to the proper
output voltage.
Step Title: Completion of self test

Subassembly:

To verify that the self test completes successfully.
Pre-Conditions:
The UPS's output shall be energized.
The appropriate AC input voltage shall be applied to the UPS.
Test Condition:
Send a "Q" to the UPS for up to 10 seconds until the response is "08" or "48".
Then send an "X" to the UPS.
The UPS shall fail if the correct "Q" response has not been received within the above time
requirement.
The UPS shall pass if the "X" response is "OK".
Failure for the "Q" response may indicate that the UPS did not retransfer to line properly.
Failure for the "X" response may indicate a defective battery.

To verify that the battery is charged and that the battery charger is working.
Pre-Conditions:
The appropriate AC input voltage shall be applied to the UPS.
The UPS must have been plugged into an appropriate voltage source for an extended time prior
to the final test so that the battery will be fully charged unless a batteryless discharge was
performed and a charged battery was placed into the UPS subsequently.
Test Condition:
Send a "B" to the UPS.
The UPS shall pass if it responds between "52.10" and "54.6", inclusive.
The UPS shall fail if it responds lower than "50.00".
The UPS shall also fail if it responds lower than "52.10" or above "54.6" and does not reach the
above pass condition within 50 seconds.
Typically expected value is "54.40". Maximum value allowed is +1 a/d count higher to allow
variation in the battery voltage from the hardware / firmware temperature compensation control.
There is a small amount of overshoot in the charger (see CA HN281). The 50 second time delay
is to allow the charger to come into range on the high or low side.
Failure on the low side may indicate an incompletely charged battery.

Failure on the low side may indicate a battery charger failure.
Failure may indicate an internal calibration problem in the UPS, although this was tested at PCB
Functional.
The minimum allowed voltage is lower than should be seen under true float conditions because of
the fact that the "B" response is calibrated to a minimum of "54.40" at PCB Functional. This lower
value allows UPSs to pass without expecting each UPS to be fully charged and recovered to its
true float voltage at this time in the test sequence.
