Subject Area(s): Math
Grade Level of Children Second Grade

workbook, riddle cards, Crack The Code Challenge sheet, Base 10 blocks manipulatives

Rationale: The students are learning that number lines and a 100 chart can be used as

Understanding that a number can be broken into ones and tens will help them count more
efficiently.

Objectives: As a result of this activity the students will use their listening skills to listen to a
riddle that tells us what number we are looking for. Using the number line or hundreds chart
as math tools, the students will show their teamwork skills to work in pairs to find the mystery
number. If applicable, addition and subtraction will be used. Using previous knowledge of
using a hundreds chart, place value, and having number line sense, the students will utilize
their resources, apply it to their learning, and share with the class what strategy they used to
find the number. The students will also break apart a number by ones and tens to add or
subtract.
