THE TIME BYRON NELSON PLAYED AT RG&CC
On July 18, 1945, Byron Nelson—the
then-best golfer in the world, a guy
who was on an unbelievable streak of
nine straight PGA tournament wins—
stopped into the Rochester Golf &
Country Club for an 18-hole exhibition
match.
Nelson, who had been visiting Mayo
Clinic for a sore shoulder, was offered a
$100 war bond by the Rochester Jaycees
if he could break the Club record of 68,
set by pro golfer and trick-shot artist Joe
Kirkwood in 1933.
Mayo Clinic doctors determined that
Nelson had a temporary muscle strain;
the tour’s leading money winner decided
the chance to pocket the $100 prize
was worth more than a day of rest, and
he and fellow touring pro Harold “Jug”
McSpaden played against the two golf
pros from the only courses in town at
the time: Wilson Crain from RG&CC
and Herb Thienell from Soldiers Field.
Hundreds of spectators showed up for
the makeshift match.
Nelson, the game’s “greatest gentleman,”
had won two Masters championships
(1937, ‘42), two PGA championships
(1940, ‘45) and the U.S. Open (1939).
Nelson bogeyed the first hole. Then
went on to birdie four of the next 8 and
finished the front nine at 3-under par.
Then came the 10th hole.
RG&CC club historian Les Fields was
one of the volunteer gallery marshals
and had a close up view of the match.
He recalled Nelson’s mastery on the
par-4 Number 10:
“Nelson always had McSpaden hit his
drive first to give him a read on the
hole,” said Fields. “McSpaden hit one
right up the middle. Nelson looked
towards the big tree at the dogleg right
along the fairway. Then he looked at
McSpaden, who smiled and shook his
head slightly to indicate, yes, you can go
over that tree. No one ever went over
that tree. Nelson’s drive cleared the tree
and his next wedge shot landed about 14
feet from the pin, which was on the back
right of a slick, slanting green. His putt,
slightly uphill, looked like it would break
seven or eight feet to the left. He hit his
putt well above the hole to allow for the
break and then came tiptoeing after it.
The ball reached the edge of the cup and
hung on the lip. Nelson waited a second,
and as he went to tap it in, it fell in the
hole. The crowd went wild.”
Nelson was four under par going into
Number 18. A par would put him at 67
and break the club record. He birdied
the final hole.
The final scorecard read: McSpaden,
74, Crain, 75, and Thienell, 87. Nelson
walked off the course with a then-record

FINALLY GOT A “MODERNIZED” NUN’S
HABIT. AND NEARLY WON.
“Kathy Reichert was one of the best golfers to ever
come out of Rochester.”
So began the 1997 induction speech for the
Rochester Quarterbacks Club Hall of Fame.
“At the age of 13, she won the Minnesota
Women’s Golf Association Junior Invitational, and
the Rochester Golf and Country Clubwomen’s
handicap title during her first full summer of
golf,” according to the QB Club. “As a freshman
at Lourdes High School, she made the varsity golf
team, the first female to do that. She won more
than 50 tournaments including the Minnesota
Women’s Golf Association medal play tournament
in 1959. She played several exhibitions with Patty
Berg to raise interest in women’s golf in the state.”
Then, in 1962, at the golf-prime age of 24, Reichert
entered the Convent of the Sisters of Holy Cross
in South Bend, Ind. She had decided to become a
nun.
In September of 1962, Reichert took the name
Sister Mary Jerome. For the next six years, Sister
Jerome did not play golf at all.
“The habits we wore made it almost impossible,”
she told the Post Bulletin in 1969. “Then they were
modernized, and that allowed me to return to golf.”
In 1969, after playing just nine holes all summer—
just nine holes in the previous six years—Reichert
decided to play in the Soldiers Field Women’s
Invitational. She shot an 86, and finished second.
Reichert taught at St. Mary’s College and served
as campus ministry director. She also served at
Dunbarton College of Holy Cross in Washington
D.C. and at St. Mary’s Academy in South Bend,
before returning to St. Mary’s College. In 1979, she
was elected a member of the Midwestern Region
Administration and served in that capacity until
1984. She died of cancer in 1985.

seedlings from the University of Minnesota for a total
of $10 and started a nursery at the southwest corner of
the course, near the present third green. Before he was
finished, Shelden started an estimated 65,000 trees (pine,
spruce, ash, birch, oak, walnut, poplar, flowering crab,
flowering plum) in the nursery. Approximately 30,000
matured and eventually were transplanted onto the
course.

About the course: Oak Summit Golf Course
opened in 1992 and is a family-owned, public
course that will challenge even the most expe-
rienced golfer. With rolling hills, great greens,
wildlife, and mature trees, Oak Summit is one
of the more scenic courses in the area.
Favorite hole: Hole #7, 557-yard dogleg right
par 5 from the blue tees. There’s water on the
left at the corner, and trees on the right. If you

About the course: A classic (opened in 1927),
Soldiers Field’s flat, short design makes it great
for beginners, but its top-notch smallish, quick
greens and abundance of trees still test the ex-
perienced player, and golfers of any caliber will
appreciate the views of the Zumbro River.

About the Course: Willow Creek Golf Course
opened in 1976 and has been a “gem” in
Rochester golf ever since. With 27 beautiful
holes, Willow Creek offers both an 18-hole
regulation course and also a 9-hole executive
course. In addition, Willow Creek has four
sets of tee boxes to accommodate all ability
levels with ease.

wildflowers. Its short par 4s make long hitters
question keeping their driver in the bag on
several holes. The sloped greens provide many
tough wedge shots and putts.
Our favorite hole: Hole #6 (504-yard, par 5
from the championship tees). A par 5 with ea-
gle potential, this is a classic risk-reward hole.
Even after the recent redesign, it’s still one of
the toughest tee shots in town.

nature hole—hole #5, the elevated tee-to-ele-
vated green, 165-yarder—has been redesigned
twice since 1960 and your tee shot travels over
and along the Zumbro. Also, SF’s eighth hole
may be the city’s toughest par 3.

Favorite Hole: Hole #9 is an amazing par 3
that plays between 150-170 yards. Your tee
shot sails from an elevated tee box, over a
valley to an elevated green with two tiers.
