In the early 1930s, Pop bought roughly 5,000 pine
seedlings from the University of Minnesota for a total
of $10 and started a nursery at the southwest corner of
the course, near the present third green. Before he was
finished, Shelden started an estimated 65,000 trees (pine,
spruce, ash, birch, oak, walnut, poplar, flowering crab,
flowering plum) in the nursery. Approximately 30,000
matured and eventually were transplanted onto the
course.
In the office above his garage, Dr. Shelden devoted many
a winter evening to drawing plans for proper distribution
of those trees.
