LESSON no 3 : RIZAL AS A SYMBOL
PROFESSOR: PROF. ANTONIO A. MALIGAYA
SY AND SEM: 2020-2021/ FIRST SEMESTER

 INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON

The readers of Rizal are said to be more powerful than Rizal himself. He lived
and died in the past, but readers make him exist. Readers can actually manipulate his
image depending on a specific agenda. The proliferation of ideas had indeed
generated as "kanya-kanyang Rizal." This lesson will focus on the symbolic Rizal
which in reality is the kind of Rizal we see in our daily lives. It is expected in the end
that the "Millennial s" would generate their own version of a symbolic Rizal.

 LESSON DISCUSSION

Historical Rizal and Symbolic Rizal

So it was evident then that "two Rizals" appeared in the course of our history. The
historic Rizal and symbolic Rizal.

Historic Rizal

 Rizal who lived and died in the 19th century Philippines.

 He is the Rizal born and raised in Calamba, Laguna,

 who studied at the Ateneo Municipal in Manila, travelled and studied abroad,

 published Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo,

 founded the La Liga Filipina and the Martyr of Bagumbayan in 1896.

He was the true person, the actual Rizal we can read in History books.

The Symbolic Rizal is the "second" Rizal.

 He is the kind of Rizal we have today.

 He is the Rizal in Luneta,

 the Rizal in the one peso coin,

 the Rizal in postage stamps,

 the Rizal as Tagalog Christ,

 the Rizal as an icon of Rock, the Rizal in t-shirts, and the list goes on.

This kind of Rizal has indeed become a text open to many meanings

Rizal as Text, Signs, and Symbols

A text is anything that can be read,

interpreted, and analyzed.
There are two types of text.
 A text can be a sign
 A text can be symbol

The first one is sign. It is a kind of text which represents a fixed

reality and posits itself as a means of portraying that reality.
Examples of signs are the Peso sign and slippery when wet road
sign.

On the other hand, a text can be a symbol which conveys meaning

not only about itself but about cultural processes and relationships; meaning,
therefore that it is not constant but constituted through a human agency.
The following photos are Rizal as symbols, suggesting that the meaning is
open to many possible meaning.

Note: The early decades of 1900s witnessed the founding

of the different religious organizations honoring Rizal as
the “Filipino Jesus Christ”.Spanish writer and philosopher
Miguel de Unamuno gave Rizal the title “Tagalog Christ”
as religious organizations venerating him had been
formed in different parts of the Philippines.

NOTE:Groups Venerating Jose Rizal

 Adarnista or the Iglesiang Pilipina

 They believe Rizal is a god of Filipino people,

 Rizal is true God and a true man

 Rizal was not executed as has een mentioned by historians

 Man is endowed with a soul, as such, man is capable of good deeds.

 Heaven and hell exist but are, nevertheless, within us.

 The adobe of the members of the sect in bongabon, Nueva Ecija is the New Jerusalem
or Paradise.

 The caves in Bongabon are dwelling place of Jehovah or God.

 There are four persons in God: God , the father, the son, the holy Ghost, and the
MOther ( Virgin Mary.)

 Sambahang Rizal- Literally the “ Rizal Church” the sambahang Rizal was founded by the late
Basilio Aromin, a lawyer in Cuyapo, Nueva Ejica 1918. They claim that Sambahang Rizal was
established to honor Rizal who was sent to Bathala to redeem the Filipino Race, like Jesus
Christ who offered his life to save mankind.

 Iglesia Watawat ng Lahi- it is established by the Philippine national heroes and arsenio de
Guzman in 1911. They claimed that God has chosen the Philippine to replace Israel as his
“new Kingdom”. Some belive that it was the Spirit of Rizal which was working with de
Guzman, telling people to live in accordance with Christ’s and Rizal’s teaching.

 Suprema de la Iglesia de la Ciudad de Dios, INC. - it was Founded by Maria Bernarda

Balitaan in Tagalog Region in the early’s 1920’s. the members believe that as a result of

3. What instances in the past show that Rizal’s image was manipulated by people?

 Key Notes/ LESSON SUMMARY

There is instances in the past show that Rizal’s image was manipulated by people. First one
is nothing has been achieved in his last will. Another manipulation was during the meetings of
Katipunan, when his portrait was hung on the walls of the meeting room so that members would see
his face clearly.
So it was evident then that "two Rizals" appeared in the course of our history. The historic

ASSIGNMENT
STUDENT JOURNAL #3

Reflect on the concepts of text. It can be deduced using the definition of text that it is
impossible to establish a single meaning since all things viewed as ext are open to many
interpretations. Applying this in the study of History, the past may be considered a text,
especially when it has been put into writing.is it really impossible to come up with a single
historic fact.

National Hero;
6. Determine if they have a healthy personality that will enable them to become ideal
Filipino citizens-socially concerned, productive, morally upright, and patriotic like Dr.
Rizal; and
7. Discover the beneficial effects of having a citizenry that possesses a healthy personality.

Present Realities:

Graft and corruption, disrespect for people's rights, inefficiency of workers, lack of concern for
the environment, drug abuse and different types of crimes, among others, are only a few examples of
existing problematic situations in the Philippines at present. These may also indicate that many
Filipinos at present are not fully functioning as human beings and are not acting or behaving as they
should. Negative biological, psychological, social, material, cultural, and also geographical Influences
have caused them to become persons with unhealthy personalities who have no qualms about
displaying anti-social acts. This is because a person with an unhealthy personality tends to be self-
centered; her or his main concern is her or his own welfare only.

Many institutions like the family, school, government, and the church have failed to develop many of
their members or constituents holistically in the dimensions of human growth and development:
physically, intellectually, psychologically, emotionally, socially, morally, and spiritually.

Psychologists and social scientists believe that development of social concern and service
orientations which results from an individual's full development is enhanced if she or he has a healthy
and normal personality supported by a positive self concept and sound values, both of which are
within the realms of psychological and mental health.
