Lesson
Lesson Predicting the Gist of the Material
Viewed Based on the Title, Pictures,
1 and Excerpts

What I Need to Know

Have you experienced reading the lines of your palm and predicting your future?
Would you believe a fortune teller predicting your future reading the images of her/his cards?
Did you go to a bookstore and buy a book because you lie the cover and the title?

Most of the time, a reader sees the title of a text, looks at a picture on the cover, or
reads the first line, prior knowledge from what they've learned and/or from life experiences is
used to make predictions. Predicting is an ongoing process that keeps the reader engaged
as he or she tries to figure out what is coming next by making new predictions. He or she is
also revising old predictions as more information is gathered. From beginning readers to
adults who've been reading the majority of their lives, predictions help keep readers focused
and motivated, and it shows that they understand what they are reading.

Making predictions when reading is an important reading comprehension strategy it

could hasten learners thinking skills. In this lesson, we will predict the gist of the material
viewed based on the title, pictures, and excerpts.

What’s New

More advanced readers make predictions very naturally before and during the
reading process, much like when someone watches a movie and keeps interrupting it to say
what they think will happen next. Now, let’s warm up by doing the activity below.

ACTIVITY 1: NAME IT
Directions: Look at the picture in column A and try to match the title and the passage in
column B.

What Is It

Predicting is an important reading strategy. It allows students to use information from

the text, such as titles, headings, pictures and diagrams to anticipate what will happen in the
story (Bailey, 2015).

2
Effective readers use pictures, titles, headings, and text—as well as personal
experiences—to make predictions before they begin to read. Predicting involves thinking
ahead while reading and anticipating information and events in the text. After making
predictions, students can read through the text and refine, revise, and verify their predictions.

What’s New

In this activity, you are going to predict what happen in the story.

ACTIVITY 2: TELL ME!

Directions: Based on the title and pictures, predict the happenings in the story and the main
point of the material viewed.

Title: Outwitting a Crocodile

Text from the story:

"Thank you, Sang Buaya for helping me to cross the river. This is my new home."
"What do you mean? You tricked us to help you cross the river?" shouted Sang Buaya. He
was shocked. "There isn't any feast, is there?"

What Is It
Making predictions is also a valuable strategy to improve reading comprehension.
Good readers scan the text and make predictions before they read in order to get a sense of
what the reading is about.

Here are some steps in making predictions:

Step 1: Read the title and make some predictions about the main idea.
Step 2: Scan the text, visuals, vocabulary words, and other aids. Make a few more
predictions about the main idea.
Step 3: Read the first and the last paragraphs and make some new predictions.
Step 4: Give your predictions on what the whole text is all about.

What is the main idea?

The main idea is the point the author is making about a topic.
We can identify and locate the main idea in writing or in visual images, such as pictures.

Example:

The photo shows a very massive magnitude 9

earthquake and from the title itself it happens in San Andrea
California.

We can predict outcome by using the events that happened in the story or situation.
We may also use the information from our experiences. Now, what you are going to do is to
look for magazines, books, newspaper or any reading materials. Post here the title, the
picture or text and make your prediction about it.

Discerning Positive and Negative
2 Messages Conveyed in a Material Viewed

What’s In
Let’s connect what you have learned in the previous lesson with the new
lesson.

Activity 1: My Predictions
Directions: Read each statement carefully and predict what is most likely to
happen next.

Event What is most likely to happen next?

1. You realized that you forgot to wear
your face mask upon arriving at the
market.

2. Your neighbours start to take their

clothes from the washing line as the cold
wind and gray clouds slowly cover the
sky.
3. Your dogs at home start to bark at
someone at the gate.

What I Need to Know

In the digital boom where information is very accessible at one’s own time and
convenience, everyone is bombarded by multimedia such as movies, videos, television and
web series, video blogs, and pictures, that blurs our minds in filtering and analyzing whether
the contents of what we watch have positive or negative messages.

In this lesson, you will learn how to watch media in a new way and sharpen your
critical thinking skills to discern positive and negative messages from the materials viewed.

What’s New
Activity 2: Plus and Minus

Directions: Identify each picture by writing PLUS on the space provided if it denotes a
positive message and MINUS if it conveys a negative message. Then cite your reasons.

What Is It

Analyzing Visual Artifacts

An analysis of pictures, movies, documentaries, or any visual artifact requires focus

not about what the artifact is arguing but about how it is making that argument whether it
conveys a positive or negative message. Specifically, it seeks to develop a persuasive claim
as to how the artifact is designed to make a particular argument in relation to its authors and
audiences, messages and meanings, or representations and reality. The goal is not to talk

9
about as many elements as possible but instead to focus on those elements you feel most
contribute to the artifact’s overall argument. (Source: https://rb.gy/vebtnn)

This strategy serves a guide in how to closely analyze images. By following the steps
in this image-analysis procedure, you will develop your critical thinking skills, enhance your
observation and interpretive skills, and develop your conceptual learning techniques. You
can use this strategy with any visual media, including a piece of art, photograph, political
cartoon, propaganda poster, or video clip. (Source: https://rb.gy/2qbyn9)

Picture Analysis

Let’s analyze the picture below step by step:

https://rb.gy/xowxuq
Step One:
Look deeply at the picture for a good long time. Observe the shapes, colors, textures,
the position or actions of people and/or objects, etc.

What caught your attention in the picture? Where do you think the picture was taken?

______________________________________________________________

Step Two:
Write down what you see without making any interpretation about what the picture is
trying to say.

What are the people doing in the picture?

10

Step Three:
Write down your questions (both positive and negative questions) about the picture
that you would like to answer before giving your interpretation.

Step Four:

Discuss your questions with your family members or two of your classmates
(preferably through messenger, or text) to try to find some answers.

What are my family members’ or classmates’ answers to my questions?

______________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________.

Step Five:
Given the historical context and subject of the piece, analyze what you think the artist
is trying to say.

1. What could be the historical context of the picture?

2. Does the picture convey a positive or a negative message? What message is
conveyed?

3. What specific elements or objects in the picture support your interpretation?

Step Six:
Discuss your interpretation with your family members or classmates (preferably
through messenger or text), and support your view by referring to specific elements of the
image and what you know about the history of the time.

Video Analysis

Analyzing a video is similar to that of a photo. However, in this lesson, we will apply
the following steps to make more sense in conveying the messages of videos more critically.

Step 1 :Anticipate

What is the title? What do you think you will see?

Step 2 : Meet the video

Identify the type of video (animation, a documentary, a movie, a music video, etc.)
and its purpose (informative, entertainment, news report, etc).

Step 3 : Observe its parts

List the people, objects and activities you see.

Step 4 : Try to make a sense of it

Guide Questions:
1. What is the video all about?
2. What message/s does it convey to the audience? (Include both positive and
negative)
3. What is the effect of the video to you as an audience? Mention specific scenes to
support your answer.
4. After watching the video, what important insight did you gain?
