Sector Introduction

RMG Sector

RMG, or ready-made garments industry, are finished textile products of the clothing industry
that are mass-produced. In 1831, the first ready-made garment factory was established in New
York.

Since its inception in the second half of the 1970s, Bangladesh's entirely export-oriented Ready-
Made Garments (RMG) sector has seen significant growth. The RMG sector is the country's
largest industrial sector, having emerged in the 1970s, developed a foothold in the 1980s, and
accelerated in the 1990s.

Surprisingly, despite the fact that this big industry is now entirely dependent on private
entrepreneurial efforts, its origins can be traced back to a Shirt export consignment made by the
state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in the mid-1970s. Some East-European
countries kept the export consignment.

RMG sector that is steadily progressing with stupendous success while still encountering a range
of insurmountable obstacles, predicting a bright future.
In Bangladesh's RMG industry, there are over 5000 garment factories employing over 12 million
people, with women accounting for 85 percent of the workforce. The industry has succeeded in
achieving global competitiveness. Following in the footsteps of the RMG sector's pioneers, a
number of other quiet and hardworking entrepreneurs established their RMG businesses in the
region. From there, Bangladesh's RMG sector grew at a rapid pace, with no need to look back.

Though there are many different types of garments manufactured in Bangladesh, all ready-made
garments are divided into two broad categories: woven products and knitted products. Shirts,
pants, and trousers are examples of woven products.Knitted products, on the other hand, include
T-shirts, Polo Shirts, Undergarments, Socks, Stockings, and Sweaters. Woven garments continue
to dominate the country's export earnings.

The "Made in Bangladesh" label has also brought glory to the country, establishing it as a
prestigious brand around the world.
