PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOME 5 2

Fall semester 2020 in the course Health 309: Health Science Research Methods with Professor

Ashley Parks I learned how to apply research skills. In the course, I was able to apply different

research skills by designing experiments, analyzing data focused on qualitative research and

quantitative research. I learned the importance of research ethics, data preparation, and interview

techniques that focus on community research. These skills are great additions to a student

majoring in health science. There are a lot of different research that can prepare students in

becoming more informed of a variety of information. Now in days because of the influence of

social media there are a lot of false information being displayed. As college students we need to

be able to interpret different data in order to form a well-developed opinion. Overall, this course

gave me exposure to the research designs by seeing a variety of examples. This was one of my

favorite courses within the health science curriculum.

In the laboratory component, there was an assignment that focused on internal validity

also referred to as the casualty. Internal validity is understanding the cause and effect within the

experimental research. Participants within the research study are often assigned in the different

random focus experiments. Some participants within a research study are consider the

independent variable and the dependent variable. The independent variables can either be

manipulated or controlled and the dependent variable is often the participants or item that is

being measured. This shows how effected is the study is because it explains the effectiveness in

the study. This group of participants are either conducted in a laboratory setting or a field of

setting. As a researcher, we want to measure if the study is effective in order to see if how the

study can provide different outcomes. In order to see if the study is effective, we need to have

either an internal validity or external validity. We need to understand how internal validity plays

a role within the study. Some examples of internality validity threats are history threat,

maturation threat, testing threat, instrumentation threat, mortality threat, and regression threat.

By measuring these types of the threats, it can display a lot of information regarding the study

being observed.

I created a PowerPoint to explain the different types of threats that are included in the

internal validity. When attending Norco College one of my favorite courses was Statistics

because I learned the importance of interpreting the different types of data sets. In this course I

was exposed to the proper method of collecting data and analyzing the data in order to make an

effective prediction based on the data collected. Taking the Health 309 made it more applicable

to what I previous learned.

The course did prepare me for conducting a research study. I applied the information

learning in the course moving forward in other of my course and even reading different literature

review. Health 309 was a great introduction. At the end of the course, I completed a report that

focused on all the principles that were learned within the course. Making the course more

applicable could enhance the students’ knowledge. The health science can make it more

applicable by completing a small sample research study in order for students to be introduced to

applying the different research methods obtained within the course. This assignment could be a

group assignment with 3-5 students. By completing this type of assignment students would gain

more knowledge and confidence to become successful researchers. The other suggestion I would

recommend would be for students to take the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative

(CITI) to understand the importance of confidential data for human subjects. I completed this

certificate because I am working as a research assistant with Professor Linton, and this is

something that would highly recommend for all health science students to complete because it is

a certificate that they could add to their resume. The students could also gain more knowledge

regarding research. This exposure would allow students to see if research is something that they

might want to pursue in the near future. I believe when a student is involved in research study

they can gain more confidence as a student they can apply this confidence matriculating in their

work environment.
