IV. PROCEDURES

What I need to know?

(Introduce the Most Essential Learning Competency and the objectives.)
How are quadratic equations used in solving real-life problems and in making
decisions?

What is new?
A. Do you still remember the steps in solving word problems?
Choose the letter that refer to each phrase below.
A. INTRODUCTION 1. replacing words by symbols a. answer
2. translating the English statements b. equation
to mathematical statements c. given
3. known information/data from d. question
the problem e. representation
4. what is asked f. solution
5. process of getting the answer
6. a response to the question

B. DEVELOPMENT What I Know

Translate the following verbal sentences to mathematical sentence. Then express into
quadratic equations in terms of “x”.

What Is In?
Example 1:
if the square of a number is added to 3 times of the same number, the sum is 108.
Find the number.
a. REPRESENTATION:
x – be the number
b. EQUATION:
x2 + 3x = 108
c. SOLUTION:

d. ANSWER: The two possible answers are -12, and 9.

Example 2.
The speed at which water travels in a pipe can be measured by directing the flow
through an elbow and measuring the height its spurts out on the top. If the elbow
height is 10cm, the equation relating the height of the water above the elbow (in cm)
and its velocity v (in cm/sec) is given by (h + 10). Find v if h = 2cm.
Solution:
substitute the value of h in the formula:

= 1960 (12)
= 23520

= 153.36 cm/sec.

What Is It?

What are my Dimensions?

Use the situation below to answer the questions that follow.
The length of a rectangular floor is 5m longer than its width. The area of the floor is .
.
Questions:
1.What expression represents the width of the floor? How about the expressions
represent its width?
2. Formulate an equation relating the width, length and the area of the floor. Explain
how you arrived at the mathematical sentence.
3. How would you describe the equation that you formulated?
4.What is the width of the floor? How about its length?
5.How did you find the length and width of the floor?
What Is More
Solve.
A bus covers a distance of 90 km at a uniform speed. Had the speed been 15 km/ hr
more it would have taken 30 minutes less for the journey. Find the original speed pf
the bus.

What I Can Do
Solve.
If the difference between a number and its reciprocal is 24/5, find the number.

What Else I Can Do

(PERFORMANCE TASK)
Let each student get the area of the frontpage cover of their Math Learners Manual
book. Represent the width of the book by x and then find the expression that
represents its length. Formulate an equation relating the width, length and the area
of the book. Explain how you arrived at the mathematical sentence. Use cm as a unit
of measurement. Take a photo while you are working and send it to your teacher.

RUBRICS

c. ENGAGEMENT

D. ASSIMILATION What I Have Learned

There are many types of applied problems involving rational equation. Success in
solving them depends upon:
1. Correct analysis of the problem
2. Proper labeling of the variable(s)
3. Accurate statement of the mathematical sentence
4. Systematic derivation of the truth set, and
5. Proper translation into the solution set

There are conditions in a given problem which when translated to the equation form
in one variable lead to a quadratic equation and two answers are obtained. In some
problems, a set of answers can be discarded. For instance, negative dimensions of
rectangles and the negative time are disregarded.

What I Can Achieve

Solve the following problems. Show the step by step process. And write a brief
explanation of what you do.
1. The width of a bedroom floor is 5 m less than its length and its area is 84 m2. Find
its dimensions.
2. A certain pipe can fill up a tank 2 hours faster than another pipe. It takes 3 and
hours for both pipes to fill up the same tank. In how many hours would the first pipe
fill up the tank?
3. A picture frame has its length 8 cm longer than its width. It has an inner 1-cm
boundary such that a maximum 660 cm2-picture may fit into it. Find the dimensions
of this frame.
4. After how many seconds is needed for a thrown ball to reach a 14-m distance if its
distance is given by the relation d = 10 + 40t – 5t2? (t=time in seconds).
