SAFETY RULES IN THE LABORATORY/WORKSHOP

Safety in the laboratory/workshop is of primary importance. Therefore everybody must use

utmost care in handling equipment and instrument, do not touch any equipment/ machine unless
u are told to do so, to avoid personal injury and damage,

The following rules and suggestions should be charged to observe the electrical Machine
laboratory:

1. Note and keep in your mind the exact position of the main an emergence switches in
order to be able to switch off the supply in case of emergency.
2. Avoid as far as possible, working along in the laboratory in order to minimize the
possibility of an electric shock or accident which could have fatal consequences as result
of unavailability of immediate help.
3. Use correct tools, material or equipment for any job. When in doubt, do not fail to ask for
the correct function of any equipment.
4. Do not play or run(horse play) about in the laboratory/workshop, pay attention to
whatever you are doing and not distract the attention of other.
5. Keep the floor clear of wire and loose cables. Instruments must not be kept on the floor
under any circumstance. Ensure the right positioning of all items e.g cables on cable rack,
meters in the cupboards provided for them, e.tc when not in use.
6. Do not wear loose clothing (e.g tie) while working on rotating machinery. Avoid wearing
metallic objects e.g chains, bracelets, etc which can cause short circuit.
7. Do not lean or pass over electrical equipment. Always wear overall/lab coat and other
protective (e.g goggles) when necessary
8. Avoid touching live wires, where it becomes necessary to work on an energized circuit
use your insulated gloves.
9. Do not remove any protective guard on machine without permission and ensure that all
precautions have taken before starting up the machine.
10. Ensure that all connections are firm and check the circuit thoroughly before emerging
them.

11. Learn and remember always the rules and regulations for treating victim of an electric
shock, and always seek for attention of first aid. If an injury is sustained, no matter how
slight, report at once to the officer in charge of the laboratory
12. Switch off all apparatus and appliances at the end of each day work to avoid fire risks

Title of Practical: Computer and Computer System

Aim of experiment: At end of the practical class, students should able to distinguish between
computer and computer system and various sub units that made up a computer system e.g
devices of input unit: Mouse, Keyboard, Light pen, Joystick, Microphone etc, output unit:
Printer, Monitor, Speaker, etc, memory: RAM, ROM, Hard disk drives, CD/DVD- ROM drive,
etc unit and central processing unit: Computer Processor .

Title of Practical: Identification of system case

Aim of experiment: At end of the practical class, students should able to identify system casing
and its various types

Tool Used: Tool kit, computer casing

Procedure:
Most power supplies can fit into the computer case in only one way. There are usually three or
four screws that attach the power supply to the case. Power supplies have fans that can vibrate
and loosen screws that are not secured. When installing a power supply, make sure that all of the
screws are used and that they are properly tighten. The system unit consists of the outer case
(“the case”) and a number of components held inside it, including the power supply,
motherboard, processor, hard drives, and DVD drives. The case may come in a flat ‘desktop
form’ or an upright ‘tower’ form. The tower form may be small (mini-tower), medium (midi
tower) or large(maxi tower)
These are the power supply installation steps:
Step 1. Insert the power supply into the case.
Step 2. Align the holes in the power supply with the holes in the case.
Step 3. Secure the power supply to the case using the proper screws.

Sub- Title: identification and installation of System Processor

Aim of experiment: At end of the practical class, students should able to know the functions of
the Processor, how to remove and replace smoothly of on the motherboard and as clearly identify
the various sockets of the processor.
Tool Used: Tool kit, unused system, blower, search light

Procedure: use the screw- driver to loose the nut at the rear of the unused system to remove the
casing of the system slightly and then, remove one side of the casing to detach the Processor,
from the motherboard. When inserting the processor, it has socket with the lever on the side of
the socket. These socket are called zero insertion force (ZIF) sockets and this lever is used to lift
the processor up and out of the socket. Push the lever down and the processor moves into its pin
or land connectors with equal force over the entire housing. With this method, you can easily
remove and replace the processor if necessary.

Sub- Title: Identification and installation of RAM

Aim of experiment: At end of the practical class, students should able to know the functions of
the Processor, how to remove and replace smoothly of on the motherboard and as clearly identify
the various sockets of the processor
Tool Used: Tool kit, system board, search light

Procedure: Random Access Memory (RAM) is installed in the motherboard before the
motherboard is secured in the computer case. Before you install a memory module, consult the
motherboard documentation to ensure that RAM is compatible with the motherboard. RAM
provides temporary data storage for CPU while the computer is operating. RAM is volatile
memory, which means that its contents are lost when the computer is shut down.

Follow these steps for RAM installation:

Step 1. Align the notches on the RAM module with the keys in the slot and press down until the
sides tabs click into place.
Step 2. Make sure that the side tabs have locked the RAM module. Visually check for exposed
contacts.
