BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

Book Title: Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade/Nevada Core Standards:

• RF.2.4 - Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

• RF.2.4.a - Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.

• W.2.3 - Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence
of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words
to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

2. Objectives:

SWBAT + Bloom’s verb

• SWBAT practice their writing skills by writing about what they want to be when they
grow up and draw/color a picture representing what they want to be when they grow up.

3. Materials/Equipment:

• Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World, lined writing paper, drawing
paper, color utensils.

4. Teaching:
A. Plan for reading the book:

• Before I read Little Dreamers: Visionary Women Around the World I will have group

discussion on different jobs

• I will have the students discuss things like what jobs their parents have and what they
think they want to be when they grow up.

• I will tell the class that they will listening to different biographies about women around
the world. I will remind them that although this book only mentions women, it does not
mean you can’t do her job.

• I will tell the class that while I am reading, I would like for them to think about what they
want to be when they are older, and how do they plan on doing so.

B. Plan for extension activity:

• After reading I will some students to share what jobs they thought of and I will write
them on the board.
• When I write them on the board, I will ask them after learning how these women
achieved their dream job, how do you plan on achieving your dream job?

• I will have them think about this question for a moment and once the students have
decided what they want to be they will go back to their desk and write a paragraph on
what they want to be when they grow up.

• After they have wrote their paragraph, they will draw a picture of themselves in their
chosen profession.

5. Closure:

• I will ask some students to share their paragraph and portrait to the class.
• To finish up I will remind children that they can achieve anything they want in life, as
long as they work hard for it.
