I. PRE-COMPETENCY CHECKLIST
Direction: Argue for or against the statement of Kumar and Siddique (2008). Write your answer
in a separate sheet of paper.

“Kumar and Siddique (2008) point out that, the ‘one word that is anathema to ASEAN …
is integration’.”

One thing that best describe an organization is the collaboration. Therefore, I am


not agreed about Kumar and Siddique statement about the anathema to ASEAN is
integration. As we all know, the aims of ASEAN is to unite and established a good
neighbouring bond. Integration comes first within the communication. It plays a vital role
in promoting the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural
development, regional peace and stability. This integration serves as a firm of
foundation of the whole ASEAN community in continuing dynamic development and
caring societies. But, I understand how Kumar and Siddique cares for every sovereignty
of the members of the ASEAN.

As a language teacher specifically a future Filipino teacher, do you think English
language is still needed in teaching-learning process though the medium of instruction
that you uses is Filipino? Would the two medium of instruction associated with each
other?
For more than a century, English has played a vital role in the linguistic history of the
Philippines. According to the 1987 Philippine Constitution, that our Filipino teacher taught us,
the official language in Philippine Education System is Filipino (for Araling Panlipunan,
Eukasyon sa Pagpapakatao and Filipino) and English (for Science, Mathematics, T.L.E,
M.A.P.E.H and English). As a future Filipino teacher, I think English language is still needed in
teaching-learning process though the medium of instruction that I uses is Filipino. Because in
our subject in Pagsasalin during our second year, there is a specific rule that we cannot change
some English term in our own language. There are eight borrowed letters from our Alphabet and
few of our words are also borrowed from other country. The teacher will find it difficult when
there are words that cannot understand because there is no specific translation into Filipino.
The two medium of instruction are associated with each other even they are different language
but still the important thing is that they have the same meaning and idea is in.

What is the implication of English language as Lingua Franca in the system of
education, cite recent studies to prove your point. What do you think is the advantages
of Filipino’s in learning English language even we are considered as the non-native
speakers?
English as a lingua franca has received a lot of attention over the years due to the
spread of English among non-native speakers of English. Today, we live in an interconnected
globalized world where the number of non-native speakers of English exceeds the native ones.
English, often seen as a practical tool and also as a working language, has emerged as a lingua
franca used by millions of people to engage in a conversation with each other.
In conclusion to the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania studies about
“English as a Lingua Franca and Its Implications for Teaching English as a Foreign Language”,
it can be said that English as a Lingua Franca findings have a great relevance for teaching
English as a foreign language. The most important advantage of English as a Lingua Franca
finding is that they reflect the language habits of English as a Lingua Franca speaker, helping
teachers asses their students’ needs and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. While
introducing English as a Lingua Franca in the curriculum might not be needed at all, English as
a Lingua Franca findings can be incorporated in language classes, by “translating” and
“adapting” them to students’ needs.Given the fairly large number of findings, the question arises
whether English as a Foreign Language should be introduced in the curriculum or replace. I
believe that although English as a Lingua Franca data are significant and can benefit teaching
English as a foreign language, they cannot replace English as a Lingua Franca, especially
because English as a lingua franca is primarily a communication tool and not a language

variant. Also, while there have been other models suggested as alternatives to teaching a
standard version of English, none of these models seem practical enough or have proven
applicable in the classroom.
I think the advantages of Filipino’s in learning English language are that we commonly
known for a good speaker even we are considered as the non-native speakers.
