From the creatorS oF the award-winning ADVENTURES IN ZAMbEZIA comes another great adventure, Khumba.
The Cape Town-based Triggerfish Animation Studio introduces us to a half-striped zebra who is rejected by his
narrow-minded and superstitious herd. They blame him for a sudden drought, so he embarks on a daring quest to earn
his stripes. Along the way he encounters a colourful range of characters who teach him that diversity is essential for survival
and that what makes you different can be what makes you strong. What makes Khumba even more awesome? It will be in
cinemas in both Afrikaans and English versions. The movie is also part of Ster-Kinekor’s “Absoluut Afrikaans” campaign aimed
at celebrating and showing off our local Afrikaans talent.

Gorilla Goes lesson?

ape for rabbit

Erie, Pennsylvania, America
Samantha the western lowland gorilla seemed to like
her new roommate, Panda the Dutch rabbit. But her
keepers at the Erie Zoo grew worried one day when the
rabbit hopped over to Samantha’s favourite stuffed
animal. They knew the ape was crazy about her toy and
feared the 90-kilogram Samantha might get upset if the
rabbit got too close. Instead, the gorilla moved the toy
so Panda could pass by. That’s when keepers realised the
two roomies were best buds.
Too shy to live with other apes, Samantha was paired
with the rabbit to prevent her getting lonely. Keepers
introduced them slowly, first letting the duo see each
other through a mesh screen. Eventually Panda moved
into the ape’s enclosure. “Almost immediately, they were
sitting side by side,” zoo CEO Scott Mitchell says.
The pair was practically inseparable. They liked
watching visitors walk by their enclosure together and
Samantha often let the rabbit nibble on her hay. Keepers
even saw the gorilla stroke Panda under his chin. “Their
friendship was one of a kind,” Scott says.

hloe the pug rarely barks. She only acts
excited when she wants a carrot snack.
Then she spins like a top and points towards
the refrigerator. But one freezing cold
morning this normally quiet pup goes berserk.
Owner Amanda Bjelland of Billings in America is
dressing for work when Chloe asks to go out. No sooner
does Amanda close the door than Chloe barks to come
in. Yapping loudly, she follows her owner from room to
room. Amanda is frustrated. “What do you want?” she
asks and lets the dog out again.
This time Chloe runs
straight to their backyard
pond. She spins and sits.
“Then I knew something was
wrong,” Amanda says. She
races to the pond.
Her Siamese cat, Willow, has
fallen through the ice! Bjelland
rescues the half-frozen kitty and
wraps her in blankets. For two
days the pug stays by Willow’s
side. “It’s amazing,” Amanda says.
“I never would have known if it
hadn’t been for Chloe.”

Cooper adopted the stray in Miami, America, when he was
three weeks old. Because of an eye infection that left him
blind, he would have been euthanised if she hadn’t taken
him. Homer never lets blindness stop him.“He’s a bold little
adventurer,” Gwen says.“He’s fearless.” The cat proves this one
night when his growling wakes up his owner. He’s never growled
before. Surprised, Gwen opens her eyes. A burglar is standing at
the foot of her bed! She reaches for her phone to call the
emergency services.“Don’t do that!” the intruder says. The sound
of his voice pinpoints his location and blind Homer leaps. No match
for a snarling cat with extended claws, the would-be robber flees.

M
onty the orange tabby cat doesn’t appeal to Patricia Peter
at first. She really wants a kitten. But all the kittens at the
Edmonton Humane Society in Alberta, Canada, are gone. The
Siamese she likes, ignores her. So Patricia adopts Monty.
Six months later she’s asleep when Monty bites her hand. “It was the
hand I poke to test my blood sugar level,” she says. Patricia has diabetes,
a serious disease that requires frequent blood testing. Wanting to sleep,
Patricia pushes the cat away. Monty only bites harder. Finally Patricia
gets up. Monty leads her to the kitchen and jumps on the counter beside
her testing kit.
Guess what? Patricia does the test and finds her
sugar level is dangerously low. She pops some
sugar tablets and her level returns to normal.
Her doctor says Monty knew something was
wrong by smelling her breath and tasting her
skin. “He’s my guardian angel,” Patricia says.
Chances are Monty feels the same about her.

Gretchen Jett’s best

11-year-old girl from
Las Vegas in America also has
epilepsy, a disorder that
causes seizures. Because of
this she usually has to play
indoors. So her dad gets a

Two nights later Zoe bursts
into the bedroom where
Gretchen’s parents are
sleeping. “She was acting
strangely,” Gretchen’s dad
says. “I got up, thinking she

Zoe runs in a circle and bolts straight into Gretchen’s
room. She’s having a bad seizure. Circling and running become
Zoe’s signals. “When she does that we know something is wrong
with Gretchen,” her dad says.
Not bad for an untrained dog that came from a shelter. Zoe’s previous
owner couldn’t keep her because the mutt kept running away. That’s not a
problem now. Zoe knows Gretchen needs her.

B
ert the tabby cat and Lili the pug aren’t friends.
“They basically ignore each other,” says owner
Gary Paquette of Rhode Island in America. But
when Lili needs help, it’s the cat that comes to her
aid. It’s still dark outside early one morning when Gary
opens their sliding glass doors to let Lili out. Their yard is
fenced in, so Gary sits down inside to wait.
Soon Bert joins him. But the cat barely gets settled
before he rises up on his hind legs, leans his paws against
the glass and growls.
Gary wonders what’s
going on. He grabs a
torch and steps out on the
deck. In the torch light is a
yellow-eyed coyote standing on
his dog! Gary runs screaming into
the yard. Startled, the coyote
jumps the fence.
Lili needs stitches and
antibiotics but recovers quickly.
It’s lucky for her that Bert’s ears
are so finely tuned. Gary didn’t
hear a thing.

motorIsed skates
It would be great to cruise along on roller skates without
ever pushing off. With spnKiX (pronounced “spin kicks”),
you can do just that. They are like small motorised
vehicles you strap on to your shoes. Each spnKiX skate
has an electric motor that can propel the skater to
16 kilometres per hour – about as fast as a swift jogger –
for about ten kilometres on one battery charge. The rider
controls the speed with a wireless remote and skids to a
stop using heel brakes. But just because the skates are
motorised, doesn’t mean you get a free ride. “You need to
use muscles to balance and steer,” spnKiX inventor Peter
Treadway says. “You’ll still sweat.”

Why won’t you see Jax the cat’s paw
prints on the floor? Because the kitty can
move from place to place on a large rolling ball!
The feline propels the ball forward by walking on top
of it. “Jax has always loved perching on narrow surfaces,
including my shoulder,” owner Samantha Martin says. “I
thought she’d like even cooler balancing acts.” To prepare
for the trick, Jax practised standing on a smaller ball set in
a bowl so it couldn’t move. Then Samantha placed her on a
bigger ball at one end of a short track. At the other end
were cat treats. The clever kitty quickly figured out that
if she carefully stepped backwards on the ball, she could
move it down the track – and get her reward. Although
Jax is now an expert at the trick, she’ll only do ArOuNd

the pig to the horns by tooting some in front of

squeezing the instruments with his mouth to make
noise. When the pig kept going, John fed him grapes
to motivate him. “Now Mudslinger comes up with
his own songs,” he says. Whenever the curly-tailed
rock star jams on his horns, he’ll toot them in

sounds. “His favourite horn in the set is
the deepest, loudest one,” John says.
“He likes to end with it.”

You’ve got to hand it to Sid the Aussie
cattle dog – she can perform a handstand
on her owner’s palm! According to Lou Mack,
the talented pup will try just about any trick if it
means getting to play with her favourite toy

conquer the handstand, Sid was positioned upside

AT THE ZOO
By KITSON JAZyNKA

A
bored polar bear at the zoo is no good for
the animal – or for the visitors who come
to see it. That’s why zookeepers all over
the world invent activities to keep the
creatures in their care entertained,
healthy and happy. Zoo animals that were born
to hunt, enjoy activities that challenge them
to go wild. Based on their natural behaviour,
the fun and games help keep the creatures
mentally and physically fit.
“The games also teach our visitors
about the animals as they show off their
amazing abilities,” says animal keeper
Devon Sabo of the Columbus Zoo in
America. Check out these stories about
the antics of zoo animals.

In the wild, otters like to play with sticks, rocks and sometimes even a turtle hiding in its shell.
But for Jo Jo the spot-necked otter nothing is more amusing than a mini-pumpkin.
Each October when Jo Jo’s keepers give him his seasonal treat, the six-year-old otter swims
around with his pumpkin all day, tucking the toy under one foreleg and paddling with his other
three legs. On land he runs around like a short, three-legged rugby player. “He’s hunched over
and ready to crash through a tackle,” says San Diego Zoo ambassador Rick Schwartz.
Jo Jo curls up to sleep with his beloved squash. When he’s awake, he sometimes stashes it
in a cave or his bedding. Only if he’s distracted by delicious trout for lunch does Jo Jo forget
his favourite toy. “But as soon as he realises he’s without it, he fetches the pumpkin even
before finishing his meal,” Rick says.
Eventually the pumpkin gets bruised and punctured(but never eaten). After a week or so
his keepers find Jo Jo’s toy sqaushed on the sand in his enclosure.

Aurora the polar bear loves snacking on fresh fish. To keep the
225-kilogram bear active, keepers stock her pool with live
trout. She catches her meals just like in the wild. But even in
a zoo it’s hard work to grab those slippery snacks. This brainy
bear has taken what her keepers started to a new level.
When they toss fish food into the pool to feed the trout,
six-year-old Aurora comes running and dives into the cold
water. Standing upright and shoulder-deep in the water, she
uses her shaggy white arms to corral the floating nuggets
close to her body. When a daring fish pops up to eat, Aurora
snags it with her sharp teeth. Before eating her dinner, she
shows off with her catch, flinging and shaking the fish for
visitors to admire.
Recently Aurora has been perfecting her technique. She
tempts the trout with fish food inside her massive jaws, which
she holds open in the water. “I haven’t seen her catch a fish
this way yet,” Devon says.“But she’s working on it.”

Jerry the bonobo has always felt the need for speed. Once he
experimented with his bedding on the slide in his indoor
playground to see if it would make him go faster. It didn’t.
One day keepers gave the bonobos huge sheets of paper to
play with. While the other bonobos were busy crunching their
sheets of paper or rolling them up to use as noisemakers,
Jerry tried out his paper on the slide. Did it give him a speedier
ride? Yes, definitely!
He starts by swinging on the monkey bars above the slide,
holding the paper in his mouth. Then he swings on to the top
platform, drops the paper on the slide and dives down face first
on to it.“He has a great time,” zookeeper Katrina McCauley says.
“He goes down the slide with a big grin on his face.”
When Jerry gets to the bottom, the five-year-old leaps up
and does it all over again.“He’s completely in his own world, just
having a ball and doing his crazy bonobo thing,” Katrina says.
