Q1. Attempt the following questions. [C3-CLO1] (10 marks)
I. A batch of 3.3 kΩ resistors is measured and found to contain maximum and minimum
resistors of 3.5 kΩ and 3.1 kΩ respectively. Compute the resistor tolerance. (3 Marks)

Given Data:
R=3.3 k Ω
Rmax=3.5 k Ω
Rmin=3.1 k Ω
Required:
Tolerance=?

Solution:
Rmax−R=3.5 k Ω−3.3 k Ω
¿ 200 Ω
R−Rmin=3.3 k Ω−3.1 k Ω
¿ 200 Ω

R=3.3 k ± 200 Ω
200 Ω
Tolerance=3.3 k ± × 100
3.3 k Ω
¿ 3.3 k Ω ±6. 09 %

II. Three resistors connected in series have the following values:

5.6kΩ + 10%, 8.2kΩ + 5%, and 6.8kΩ + 2%
Compute the total resistance, the maximum absolute error, and the maximum relative
error. (3 Marks)

Given Data:
R 1=5.6 k Ω± 10 %
R 2=8.2 k Ω ±5 %
R 3=6.8 k Ω± 2 %
Required:
Max Absolute Error = ?
Maximum Relative Error = ?

Solution:
10
R 1=5.6 k Ω± % ×5.6 k Ω
100
¿ 5.6 k Ω ±560 Ω

5
R 1=8.2 k Ω ± % ×8.2 k Ω
100

¿ 8.2 k Ω ± 410 Ω

2
R 1=6.8 k Ω± % ×6.8 k Ω
100
¿ 6.8 k Ω ±136 Ω

Rtotal=R 1+ R 2+ R 3
¿(5.6 k Ω+ 8.2 k Ω+ 6.8 k Ω)±(560+ 410+136)
¿ 20.6 k Ω ±1.106 k Ω
¿ 20.6 k Ω ±5 .36 8 %

Maximum Relative Error = 5.368 %

Maximum absolute Error = 1.106kΩ

III. Two series-connected resistors are specified as R 1 = 1.8 kΩ + 5% and R 2 = 4.7 kΩ +

10% at 25 oC. If each has a 200 ppm/oC temperature coefficient, compute the maximum
and minimum resistance of the two at 60 oC. (4 Marks)

Given Data:

R1 = 1.8kΩ ±5 %
&
R2 = 4.7kΩ ±10 % at 25 ℃
o
200 ppm/ C temperature coefficient

Required:

maximum and minimum resistance of the two at 60 oC

Solution:
5
R 1=1.8 k Ω ± % ×1.8 k Ω
100
¿ 1.8 k Ω ±90 Ω
10
R 2=4.7 k Ω ± % × 4.7 k Ω
100
¿ 4.7 k Ω± 470 Ω

Rtotal=R 1+ R 2
Rtotal=(1.8 k Ω± 90 Ω)+(4.7 k Ω± 470 Ω)
Rtotal=( 6.5 k Ω ±56 0 Ω )
Rmax = 6.5kΩ + 560Ω
¿ 7.06 k Ω
Rmin = 6.5kΩ - 560Ω
¿ 5.94 k Ω
