INTRO
Good day everyone! I am Mr. Jakie Belango Ubina your
Chemistry teacher from Solana National High School. I just want to
passionately welcome and thank you for joining us today. I am indeed
glad that you`re with us because this podcast is specially designed for you.
What I want to do in this podcast is talk about the difference
between vectors and scalars. And they might sound like very complicated
ideas, but we'll see over the course of the podcast that they're actually very
simple ideas. So first I'll give you a little bit of a definition. And then I'll
give you a bunch of examples, and I think the examples will make things
super clear. Hopefully, they'll make things super clear.

DISCUSSION
Throughout the course of our study of physics, we will encounter a
variety of concepts that have a mathematical basis associated with them.
While our emphasis will often be upon the conceptual nature of physics,
we will give considerable and persistent attention to its mathematical
aspect.
The motion of objects can be described by words. Even a person
without a background in physics has a collection of words that can be used
to describe moving objects. Words and phrases such as going fast,
stopped, slowing down, speeding up, and turning provide a sufficient
vocabulary for describing the motion of objects. In physics, we use these
words and many more. We will be expanding upon this vocabulary list
with words such as distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and
acceleration. As we will soon see, these words are associated with
mathematical quantities that have strict definitions. The mathematical
quantities that are used to describe the motion of objects can be divided
into two categories. The quantity is either a vector or a scalar. These two
categories can be distinguished from one another by their distinct
definitions:

A scalar is a quantity that is fully described by a magnitude only. It


is described by just a single number. Some examples of scalar quantities
include speed, volume, mass and time.
A vector is a quantity that has both a magnitude and a direction.
Vector quantities are important in the study of motion. Some examples of
vector quantities include force, velocity, acceleration and momentum.

To test your understanding of this distinction, consider the following
quantities. Categorize each quantity as being either a vector or a scalar. 
1. 5 m (scalar)
2. 30 m/sec, East (vector)
3. 5 mi., North (vector)
4. 20 degrees Celsius (scalar)
5. 45 s (scalar)
6. 4000 L (scalar)
7. 317 kph (scalar)
8. 250 kg (scalar)
9. 35 m/s, West (vector)
10. 45 kph, Northeast (vector)

WRAP-UP
Scalar quantity is defined as the physical quantity with magnitude
and no direction.
Some physical quantities can be described just by their numerical
value (with their respective units) without directions (they don’t have any
direction). The addition of these physical quantities follows the simple
rules of the algebra. Here, only their magnitudes are added.
A vector quantity is defined as the physical quantity that has both
direction as well as magnitude. Hence, a vector with the value of
magnitude equal to one and direction is called unit vector.

is a factor of experience. As age grows our curiosity should increase in the
direction of learning something new. Every day we should learn
something new”.
