Petrel 2015
With this Petrel* E&P Software 2015.1 major release, Schlumberger continues its commitment to improve and
innovate the way you work. Petrel allows multi-domain experts to co-create a shared earth model that can be
continuously updated as new information is acquired. These release notes contain short descriptors for the most
significant enhancements, fixed issues, and known limitations as well as system requirements and
recommendations.

The full set of Petrel 2015 documentation and documentation for any prior Petrel release, can be downloaded from
the Software Integrated Solutions (SIS) Support Portal.

Welcome to Petrel 2015.1

The highlights of this release are shown below, and described in greater detail in the following sections.

Upgrade of the Schlumberger License Server

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

All SIS major software releases after April 2015 will require an upgrade of the SIS License Server to the 2015
version. The old server will not work with the 2015 software releases (starting from Petrel 2015.1) and the license

Geophysics: Quantitative Interpretation

Feature Short Description
Lithology Classification This new set of QI processes performs lithology classification by
defining the elastic signature of lithology and fluid types using rock
physics analysis and well data through the Bayesian estimation
theory. The signatures are applied to seismic inversion attributes to
generate 3D maps of reservoir properties (for example, porosity and
saturation) with associated probabilities and uncertainties.
Crossplotting of Surfaces, The QI Crossplot gives you the crossplotting of new datasets, such
Horizons and Point attributes as:
• Point attributes
• Horizon interpretation attributes
• Surfaces attributes
Create classification data using One of the key steps when the data is analyzed in a crossplot is being
multiple selections in the QI able to interpret the data by generating multiple selections and then,
Crossplot to classify the information. In this release, a multi-classification tool
has been introduced in the QI Crossplot, which gives you the
generation of classification data for each data type supported by the
QI Crossplot window.

Geophysics: Seismic Well Tie

Feature Short Description
Interactive bulk shift In the seismic to well tie process, after the synthetics is generated
from the logs, an interactive bulk shift is performed to get the closest
match between the synthetics and the seismic.
Continuous alignment In the seismic to well process, sometimes small adjustments have to
be made to match the synthetics with the seismic after the bulk shift
is implemented. To perform these adjustments in Petrel, we use the
alignment functionality. In Petrel 2015.1, the process became
interactive.
Well Section Windows (WSWs) A temporary TDR from an active WSW can be used to extract a
temporary Time Depth deterministic wavelet. In the older versions of Petrel, the TDR had to
Relationship (TDR) for wavelet be assigned to the well in order to perform the deterministic
deterministic extraction extraction.

well can be selected as “TDR” input for the synthetics generation
study.
WTB Scale factor In Petrel 2015.1, in the WTB operation on the Scale factor tab, an
escalation of the wavelet is performed in the time domain.
Standard wavelet phase With the aim to be consistent with a generic wavelet phase
convention convention used in the oil industry, a new “Standard phase
convention” option has been introduced in the Wavelet toolbox
under Wavelet display options. This is the default display
convention.
Synthetics in depth The synthetics used to be a time domain object. In Petrel 2015.1, the
synthetics that is generated can be saved with depth as the vertical
index.
One of the key elements for the inversion process is the wavelet.

Multi-well extended white
wavelet extraction (MWEW) There are different ways to extract wavelets from the seismic
volumes. In Petrel, one of these ways is the Deterministic method,
extended white, and it can be used to extract wavelets for a specific
borehole. It works fine when you are only interested in just one well,
but in many cases, for inversion, more than one well is used to
perform the extraction. To solve this issue, in Petrel 2015.1, a multi-
well deterministic wavelet extraction is available.

Feature Short Description
Make surface – use input inside When selected, all input points located outside the boundary,
boundary only whether from the main input or from any additional input, are ignored
by the gridding algorithm. When the specified boundary is made of
several closed polygons, the gridding will also be performed
independently in each polygon, ignoring the data lying outside of
each polygon in turns.
Performance improvement for Performance is improved when using a combination of sequential and
Facies and Petrophysical parallel algorithms in the Facies and Petrophysical modeling
modeling methods processes. In addition, performance of the Object modeling algorithm,
when simulating fluvial channels, is greatly improved.

facies model.
Isochore interpolation method in In Petrel versions prior to 2015.1, when running Make/edit surface
Make/edit surface with the isochore interpolation method and using Well adjustments,
the resulting surface could include negative values. In 2015.1, the
Well adjustments, which is a post-processing operation that was the
cause of the negative values, is disabled when using isochore
interpolation method.
Use of Vertical mean trend curve Since 2014.1, in Trend modeling, when creating a new Trend model
in Trend modeling using a Vertical mean trend, there was a bug that inverted the values
with regards to the model layers (the values for the top layer were
interpreted as being at the bottom and vice versa). This has been
fixed in Petrel 2015.1.
Memory consumption of GRFS Up to Petrel 2014.5, running the method Gaussian random function
method with co-kriging simulation (GRFS) with co-kriging was over-consuming memory. This
has been fixed in Petrel 2015.1.
Use of trend surface and absolute When running Gaussian random function simulation (GRFS) and
output data range in GRFS and Sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) using both a trend surface and
SGS methods in Make/edit an absolute output data range in Make/edit surface, the resulting

permeability upscaling method, but also to be faster and to take into
account the whole fracture network.

Geology: Wells
Feature Short Description
Sidetrack/lateral well Sidetrack, sometimes referred to as a lateral well, is often drilled as
part of an intentional or corrective measure to optimally intercept
geological targets different from the mother bore. It has a defined
relationship to the main bore and survey and always shares the same
surface location as their mother bore.
Sidetrack/lateral well might be a drilled series of horizontal wells in a
shale gas reservoir or drilled as a relief well or to avoid obstructions
near a producing well.
Note the following about sidetrack/lateral in Petrel. (Please refer to
Petrel E&P Software Platform 2015 What’s New Guide for details.)
• The sidetrack/lateral well tie into a main bore and kicks off from
the tie-in MD.
• In the Input pane, the main bore and sidetrack wells exist as
separate objects in the tree.
• The tie-in MD can be specified by you or automatically
calculated during import of the multi-well path/deviation survey.
• To create sidetrack wells and their surveys and plans, and how
to set up the tie-in trajectory and tie-in MD relationship in the
project.
• Sidetracks behavior in the Well manager, and how to import
sidetrack surveys and display sidetrack well logs.
• Changes to the Well settings dialog, the Inspector, and the
survey spreadsheets calculation when you design sidetracks.
• Petrel Studio and RPT support for sidetrack/lateral well.

Reservoir Engineering
Feature Short Description
Reservoir engineering unit Petrel 2015.1 introduces flexible Reservoir engineering unit settings
settings for some dialog boxes and spreadsheets. This allows you to set the

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

unit system differently from the project unit to enter and display
measurement values in a more familiar unit system.
The dialog boxes and spreadsheets supporting flexible units are:
Development strategy dialog box, Field management dialog
box, Make fluid model dialog box, Make rock physics
functions dialog box, INTERSECT tabs in the Define simulation
case dialog box, VFP manager, Make initial conditions dialog
box, Initial conditions from maps dialog box, Settings for
'ECLIPSE network' dialog box, Rock physics spreadsheet,
Fluid spreadsheet.
Create initial conditions sets Create an initial condition set for a reservoir which is in hydrostatic
equilibrium, by either manual input of equilibration data (for a single
region), or by supplying a discrete region index property or contact
sets (for multiple regions) and entering the necessary data. Each
equilibration region is mapped to a valid fluid model.
This process allows you to carry out initialization in the context of
the grid. It provides a guided workflow with validation against the
grid, fluid model and simulator, to create a valid initial condition set
for simulation.
Create initial conditions sets Create an initial condition set for a reservoir with areal variation in
from maps the depth of the oil-water and gas-oil contacts; cases where the
reservoir is believed to be in dynamic steady-state situation with
spatially varying FWL, and GOC, due to a regional hydrodynamic
gradient.
This process uses the spatially varying contacts and compositions
(Rs/Pb and/or Rv/Pd) as inputs and discretizes it into thousands of
regions and also associates the correct fluid model to each
equilibration region, with the aid of a discrete PVT region index
property.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 27 15 June 2015

Feature Short Description
Fluid numbering Identify fluids in your project using numbers. Fluid numbers are used
to match fluids to the numbers in the Initial conditions from
maps dialog box when your reservoir model has more than one fluid
model associated with it, usually defined by a PVT region index
property (discrete).
ECLIPSE result generation For ECLIPSE cases, greater flexibility is given to allow you to control
selection options in the Define the output and frequency of the reports generated by the simulator.
simulation case The Results tab in the Define simulation case process now
comprises a series of sub-tabs that allow you to more easily select
the outputs for an ECLIPSE case.
Preset EOR result options in the Simplify the selection of simulation results for enhanced oil
Define simulation case recovery models using preset result selections.
3D results analysis 3D results analysis creates tiled plots of selected 3D results in
camera-linked windows, with legends displayed and all properties
scaled to their data range. This allows faster visualization and

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

analysis of 3D simulation results for a selected case.
Preset options for 3D results plots Presets are available to target different types of analysis, including
EOR schemes, as well as generally useful plots, such as saturations
and pressure.
Visualizations for deviated tracks Petrel 2015.1 fully supports all workflows involving display and
in the Well Section Window editing of RE data in vertical and deviated tracks and in the
background area in a transparent manner.
The size and shape of data displayed in a deviated track depends on
the orientation of the borehole trajectory relative to the cross-
section plane at the point of the data; the distance of the deviated
track from the borehole trajectory; and the position of the
neighboring trajectory points.
It is possible therefore, that data having the same length in MD,
may appear to have different lengths when viewed in a deviated
track.
Well Section Window template If you make changes to the display style and settings for data in
the template for a Well section window, these styles and
settings are applied if you re-display the same case-log or case-
result combination. Any customized styles and settings in a Well
section window template are automatically applied if you re-run
the simulation case.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 28 15 June 2015

Feature Short Description
Exporting cases from uncertainty The export of base cases used in Uncertainty and optimization
and optimization workflows workflows depends on the simulator used, for example, if the
workflow has a base case and two realizations:
• ECLIPSE exports two cases; one case for each realization. If the
base case has already been exported previously, the realizations
will reference the base case; otherwise they will incorporate
incorporating the necessary information from the base case
• INTERSECT exports three cases; one case for each realization
referencing the base case, and a single copy of the base case.
In Petrel 2015.1, INTERSECT base case sharing can only be used
with Field management strategies.
Support for INTERSECT grid edits • You can now directly export GPM settings into an IXF file.
workflow Edits in GPMs are exported as "editing instructions," and then
INTERSECT applies these to the unedited grid properties after
loading them from data files.
• Support on sparse region definition

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Prior to Petrel 2015.1, any region values that did not start at 1,
or where discontinuous, were compacted into a continuous
series starting at a value of 1. With Petrel, region values are
exported as entered.
• Well connections using cell I–J–K index
Well to cell connections are now exported with its correct I–J–
K index rather than using the global ID.
Improved simulation export Simulation export performance has been improved using the
performance following methods:
• Intelligently exporting only changes in 3D grids and properties.
• Base cases share files with U&O realizations.
• Grid properties are compressed when writing to a GSG file.
Define Simulation Case, Function The following new features are available on the Function tab of the
tab Define Simulation Case process:
• For both ECLIPSE and INTERSECT
Low salt (oil wet) relative permeability
• For ECLIPSE 100 and 300 only
o Surfactant miscible relative permeability
o Low salt (water wet) relative permeability
• For ECLIPSE 300 and INTERSECT only
Miscible relative permeability
VFP manager (behavioral change) The “Compare two VFP tables” feature has been removed from
Petrel 2015.1, as it was missing the ability to effectively merge
curves from two or more tables, which resulted in a restricted ability
to analyze.

Drilling: General
Feature Short Description
Drilling structure and slots Drilling structure and the slots within a drilling structure are used to
accurately place wellheads. It allows you to organize the wells and
ensures that well heads are maintained by a fixed drilling structure.
Drilling structure slots are used by the well design and well
positioning workflows, but assigning the wells to drilling structures
can be done from any well object and does not require these specific
modules.
Transferring plans or targets In the Petrel releases prior to 2015.1, when transferring well plans or
between Studio and Petrel targets between Studio and Petrel projects, if the Studio repository
projects CRS is incompatible with the Petrel project CRS, after a data round
trip, the plans or targets could mismatch with the original data. This
issue has been fixed for transferring data from Petrel 2015.1. For the
plans or targets that are transferred from the Petrel releases prior to
2015.1, the data could still mismatch after a round trip. To solve this
issue for the legacy project, you can upgrade the Petrel project to

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

2015.1 and then transfer the data to Studio.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 34 15 June 2015

Feature Short Description
Foundation – Geopolygon: Geopolygon is a new data object in Petrel representing closed
Collaborate & Find polygon data with holes and attributes. It does not support Z values;
converting a native Polygon to a Geopolygon will flatten the shape, as
the Z value will not be preserved. The Geopolygon is supported by
Studio for collaboration and Find workflows. Performance on data
transfer with the Geopolygon can be, on average, about 20 times
faster than when transferring a similar polygon in Petrel 2014.x or
earlier versions.
Drilling – Find Drilling data are now being indexed in Petrel and Studio, enabling the
Find workflows for the following data objects: Bottom Hole Assembly
(BHA), Target, Risk, Survey program, and Planned well path.
Associated search filters have been added.
Drilling – Risk URL A Drilling risk can be associated with a URL. The URL and URL display
are added to Studio and can be displayed in the Repository data
table.
Drilling – Units of Geological Previously, the units of the Geological Target positions (TargetPointX
and TargetPointY) were not indicated in the Repository data table.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Target positions
This has now been fixed. This fix has triggered a change in the way
we store Target data in Studio. Target data, initially converted and
stored in the repository CRS, are now stored in the CRS of the Petrel
project from which they are transferred. No CRS conversion will be
performed when transferring the Target data into Studio. A CRS
conversion will only apply when transferring the Target data back to
Petrel if the storage CRS in Studio is different from the targeted
Petrel project CRS. In the Repository data table, Target data will
always display in the Repository CRS.
Production – Find The most commonly-used well level observed data have been added
to the Petrel and Studio Find indexes, and enabled as search filters in
order to identify wells based on KPIs.
Geology – New well model Studio supports the new well model, new trajectory types for surveys
and plans, and the new sidetrack/lateral well. In 2015.1, all the old
model wells transferred from Studio to Petrel will be migrated to the
new model, following the same migration rules as Petrel. The Find
workflows have been enabled for both surveys and plans and lateral
wells.
Geology – Raster log The Raster logs data model has been changed to allow a proper
parent-child association with the well. It now behaves like any other
well log in Studio.
Geology – Stratigraphy The Stratigraphic event association on Surface, Well top horizon and
association Seismic horizon is preserved during the Studio transfers. This enables
you to reestablish the link to the Stratigraphy when those data are
transferred back to Petrel and to perform new Find workflows where
Surfaces and Seismic horizons can be retrieved from the Petrel and
Studio indexes based on their geological age.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 35 15 June 2015

Feature Short Description
Geophysics – Horizon metadata The dataset on which a Horizon was last interpreted is preserved in
Studio and added to the Petrel and Studio indexes. In Find, this
metadata can be used to filter the data and/or to organize the search
results. It allows better management and access to the seismic
horizons.
General – time zone We have improved how we handle the date time data & history dates
by systematically converting them to/from the server time zone during
the Studio transfers.
In Petrel, the date time data display in the project time zone and the
history dates display in the local time zone. Both will be converted to
the server time zone when transferred to Studio. These conversion
rules require the Project Time Zone to be set when connecting to
Studio.
General – Transfer performance Transfer performances have been improved for the following
datatypes:
• Retrieval from Studio to Petrel of 3D Horizon interpretation

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

(~6x faster)
• Transfer to or from Studio of Polyline set and Polygon data
(~20x faster)

Technology: Shale: Geosteering

Feature Short Description
Geosteering in the vertical track Geosteering in the vertical track provides you with the ability to
interactively correlate a segment of the realtime log with the offset
well log by stretching, squeezing, and translating a ghost curve.
Create a tie-in point on a curtain While geosteering a well, a point or segment already interpreted and
section seen on the real-time log might indicate the top of a horizon that is
encountered. A tie-in point can be created on the curtain section, and
the horizon(s) shifted by an offset or TVD using the Tie-in point tool.
Changing the shift value recalculates the synthetic log, which is used
to match the real-time log.
Straighten the block while To straighten the block instead of leaving the block as interpreted,
removing a hinge select the Straighten the block check box. This will interpolate a
line from the surrounding two hinges or boundaries. This change will
be recorded for cloning or applying a curtain section with changes.

Known Issues
The following content summarizes known issues and limitations for this release, organized by domain.

Geophysics: Quantitative Interpretation

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
AVO modeling • Prestack datasets, which belong to an AVO modeling study, need to
be reconnected when the Petrel project is moved to a new location.
Workaround:
o Identify the prestack datasets inside the borehole at the AVO
modeling study folder.
o Right-click on the prestack data set and from the menu select
“Reconnect missing file …” option.
o Identify the related prestack data in your directories.
o Make sure to select the correct prestack dataset.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

• Changes in prestack datasets, which belong to an AVO modeling
study, are saved independently of the Petrel save mode. It means
that any change to the AVO study parameters or inputs will always
be kept in the final result, when the study is in Auto-update mode
or when Apply or OK is selected.
Workaround: It is recommended to save the Petrel project every
time an input or parameter is modified in an AVO modeling study,
in order to keep the consistency between input and output.
• Copy/Paste of prestack datasets, which belong to an AVO modeling
study, disable the editing feature in the AVO modeling study.
Workaround: If a copy of the prestack dataset is needed, export the
prestack dataset and re-import it in the Petrel project.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 41 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
QI Crossplot • When a 3D Crossplot is used to display a collection containing
poststack seismic data, some points of the collection will appear
outside the axis, when the amplitude range at the statistics of the
seismic volumes is not correct.
Workaround: If post-stack seismic data is being used in a 3D
crossplot, make sure that the amplitude range is correct, in order to
define the proper limits in the axis. Change the scan values by
going into the seismic volume Settings, select the Operations tab
and then the Amplitude sub-tab; the Scan and Rescan buttons can
be used to determine the amplitude range from the data.
• Axis labels rendering artifacts can appear when a 3D crossplot
when it’s displaying data with logarithmic scale at any of the axis.
The most common case is when the difference in magnitude
between the axes is very large
• The classification data generated by the QI Crossplot such as: Well
log classification data (discrete log), Point classification attribute

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

(discrete attribute), Horizon interpretation classification attribute,
and Surface classification attribute are outputs that are always
updated by any modification in the related QI Crossplot collection
or Crossplot selection. This means that if any of the outputs is
modified after its creation, by using Calculators, Log editors, Log
conditioning and so forth, and then, the related QI Crossplot
collection or Crossplot selections are modified, the classification
data will come back to its initial state, losing all the prior edition.
Workaround: It is recommended to create a copy of the
classification data (if after its creation), edition of the outputs is
needed. Then, edit the copy of the classification data instead of the
original classification output. This will prevent undesired changes
in the edited data (copy of the classification data) when the QI
Crossplot collection or Crossplot selections are modified.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 42 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
QI Licensing Some of the Quantitative Interpretation tools are not available when
you select a new License Module in an active Petrel session (warm
check out). The following processes are not activated when using this
functionality:
• Seismic trace alignment
• Seismic resampling
• Reservoir AVO modeling
• Inversion property builder
• Simultaneous seismic inversion
• Stochastic seismic inversion
• Inversion QC plot
• Litho classification tools
Workaround: Close Petrel, re-open it, and select the Quantitative
Interpretation license; after that, all the Quantitative Interpretation

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

tools will be available.

QI Reservoir AVO modeling The random noise attribute generated by QI Reservoir AVO modeling
has a dependency on how the data are passed to the component by
Petrel. We have seen an issue when comparing random noise attributes
in 2014 and 2015 that they are different, due to data blocking changes
between Petrel 2014 and 2015.
Random noise attributes produced in 2015 are consistent from one run
to another (if a fixed seed is used) so the issue is one of incompatibility
between Petrel versions 2014 and 2015.
Workaround: No workaround for a match between 2014 and 2015, but
running multiple times in 2015 will give the same results.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 43 15 June 2015

Geophysics: Seismic Well Tie
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Various features • For every study, a temporary folder and objects will be created
and stored under the Input tree; they will be located under
Well > Study Folder > Visual. This folder should not be
deleted.
• Deleting any required input data belonging to a study from the
Input tree will close and delete the current study. All the objects
saved from the study will still be preserved in the Input tree.
• If a seismic, log, or wavelet used in an SWT study is deleted, the
SWT settings will be auto populated by the next available object
using the same template.
• Deleting the Well section window study will delete the
information inside this study and temporary objects created for
visualization. All the objects saved from the study will still be
preserved in the Input tree.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Geology: General
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Mapping > Enhanced Contours • Enhanced contour maps displayed in more than five Map
windows at a time could cause Petrel to crash.
• Enhanced contouring with fault polygons may fail when using
running on Windows 8.

Surface triangulation Triangulation of a surface bet, for some processes that use surfaces
as input (for example, Make horizons and Make zones) may show
slight changes in the volume calculation result compared to Petrel
2014.x

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 44 15 June 2015

Geology: Well Section Window
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Simulation logs When you upgrade a project from Petrel 2009 or 2010 to Petrel 2015,
the simulation logs are upgraded as regular logs in the Well section
window.
First workaround:
• Open the project in Petrel 2010. On the Input pane, clear the
check boxes of the simulation logs, and update the template.
Then, select the check boxes of the simulation logs in the Input
pane, update the template, and save the project.
• Open the project in Petrel 2009. On the Windows pane, expand
a Well section window, and delete the simulation logs. On the
Input pane, select the check boxes of the simulation logs to re-
add them to the Well section window, and then save the project.
Second workaround: Delete the invalid logs, and then recreate the
logs in the current version of Petrel.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Polysection x-section When the well head is selected in the Settings for x-section
creation via polysection dialog box, the polysection uses the well
head to define the wells that are included in the cross section. The
cross section fence alignment will use the default setting with
alignment at the bottom of the well and not the well head.
Workaround: You can change the fence alignment in the Settings for
X-section dialog box by clicking the Definition tab, and then
clicking the Alignment tab.
Time series mini toolbar A time step within the time series log must be activated via the 3D
window and time player before the mini toolbar icons can function for
time series logs in the Well section window.
Reference project tool A Plot window has been defined containing a Well section window in
Petrel 2013. When using this 2013 project as a Reference project tool
background project in Petrel 2014 or 2015, the Plot window will be
empty and Petrel might crash.
Workaround: Upgrade the project from Petrel 2013 to Petrel 2014 or
Petrel 2015.
The Reference project tool can be used with the newly-created Petrel
2014 or 2015 project, which will result in maintaining the data
displayed in the Plot window.

Global well log It will take several minutes or several hours to delete a global well
log when you are displaying a large number of wells (>1000) in a Well
section window.
Workaround: Close any large Well section window prior to deleting
the global well log.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 45 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Horizontal and vertical scale When a Well section window is a part of a tiled window set and is
not the active window, the vertical scale and horizontal spacing list
might be grayed out.
Workaround: Activate the Well section window or close the Well
section window, save the project, and exit Petrel. Then, launch Petrel
and open the project. The horizontal and vertical scale list will be
available.

Geology: Structural Geology

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Horizon Modeling - Volume Based It is not possible to explicitly define truncation rules between
Modeling (VBM) Method unconformities other than by top-down order: upper unconformities
always truncate any unconformities located below. As a
consequence, base-base relationships are not working as expected.
Missing fault face causes When running the Structural gridding process for a VBM model with

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

leakage in simulation between faults, the faults are stair-stepped by calculating the fault faces.
isolated block During this calculation, some pairs of cells are missed at the vicinity
of the tip loop of the fault. This issue will lead to a hole in the fault
with cells on either side of the fault being connected. When you add
a Transmissibility Multiplier to such a fault, and run a simulation, the
absence of the fault face will cause an unwanted leakage between
the two isolated block of the grid.
This type of issue can be detected by running a FrontSim simulation
(or by generating streamlines from ECLIPSE simulation results). Once
the pair of cells is identified, setting one as inactive will restore the
isolation of the blocks.
Wrong layering produced when When using the Stratigraphic layering method, only the new
vertical or near-vertical faults are stratigraphic layering algorithm in Structural gridding process relies
present on information provided by the VBM model on the pillar. In some
scenarios with vertical fault (or parts of the fault being vertical), the
information returned by the VBM model has to be slightly displaced in
order to avoid numerical instabilities, which blocks the construction
of the grid. This small displacement can, however, create an artifact
on the produced layering, resulting in wrong layers in the grid.
After having identified the section of vertical faults, try to slightly
modify the fault in order to have them less vertical.
Note that a more reliable solution is being worked on for a future
release of Petrel.

Geology: Modeling
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Use of Depospace in Facies and When using Depospace in Facies and Petrophysical modeling, the
Petrophysical modeling non-objectivity of the mapping between the Geospace and the
Depospace leads to the following artifacts:
a. 1D filter and depospace simbox: When using a 1D filter (located
in the Input pane) and the depospace simbox view in a 2D or 3D
window, you may observe that some cells are filtered out when
they should not be and vice versa. Therefore, if filtering is
needed, it is recommended to use the filters located in the Filter
tab of the Properties settings (in the Models pane). Similarly,
when using a filter for conditioning a modeling simulation, some
cells are disregarded when they should not be and vice versa.
b. Use of trends: Modeling a facies or a property using a
conditioning to some non-depositional property could lead to

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

some inconsistencies. This can happen when using a vertical
function as a trend or a seismic attribute as a secondary variable
in co-kriging. This is also due to the non-bijectivity of the
mapping (e.g., several cells from one grid mapping in one cell of
the other grid).

Geology: Wells
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Upgrade The well upgrade in 2015.1 may take a slightly longer time to
complete, depending on the content of the project. This lag in project
startup will happen the first time a project is opened in Petrel 2015.1.

Visualization The Well tops symbol visualization problem in a 2D/3D window could
be related to your system’s older graphics card drivers. Ensure your
system graphic card update is compatible.
Trajectory calculation The consequence of setting a failed calculated survey/plan (with a
red X symbol) as the definitive survey or active plan will cause the
well to have an empty trajectory spreadsheet.
Find When loading wells to your project from a Find Index search, only the
well head location will be transferred if run in Silent Mode. Silent
mode supports only upper-level objects. To load all the surveys and
trajectories, use the Reference project tool.

Import The following formats are no longer supported when importing well
data:
• Petrel Format Binary
• Well Design XYZ

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 47 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Well plans • Automatic plans for wells do not currently support editing. This
will be addressed in a future release of Petrel 2015. XYZ Plans
are editable via the spreadsheet.
• Interactive well design of a lateral well is currently not supported
when the active plan of a tie-in well is an Explicit, Automatic, or
XYZ plan.
RPT User-defined well attributes may be lost in the receiving project when
transferring wells.
Workflow editor Support for Well Operations has changed, with regards to well plans.
Currently, they only support wells where an XYZ plan is active for the
well. The Scale well trajectory and Upgrade old style well commands
are no longer supported in the new well model.
Well Attributes Petrel projects with an active velocity model created a TWT 1
attribute with a value for each well in prior releases of Petrel. In
2015.1, the TWT 1 attribute will not have a value. This occurs when
you right click on the Well Attributes folder and select domain

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

convert by active velocity model. The created attribute can be
displayed in the Well Manager and temporarily fixed by deleting it
from the tree.
Well Design When a 2013.x Petrel project is opened in 2015.1, the Automated
design icon may be deactivated in the Well Path group of the Well
Design ribbon. This can be fixed by saving the project in 2014.x, prior
to upgrading to 2015.1.

Geology: Reservoir Geomechanics

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
General known issues • Implicit Fracture Network (IFN) models are not supported.
• Support for nodal-based data (allowing display of distorted grids
and surfaces) is not available with this release.
• If a new simulation queue is added in Petrel, this will not
immediately appear in the RG Simulation
• Launch process. Petrel must be restarted to enable the queue.
• The following Petrel functionality is not supported in this release:
o Running remote cases through EnginFrame.
o Transferring geomechanics information between projects using
the Reference project tool (RPT).
o Petrel Uncertainty and Optimization (U&O) workflows.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 48 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Coupling with ECLIPSE • The following updating of ECLIPSE reservoir simulations (in 2-
way coupling with VISAGE) are supported by this release:
o Simple reservoir models: permeability and porosity
updating
o Simple reservoir models with LGRs: permeability
updating only
o Dual porosity ECLIPSE models: permeability updating
only
o Dual porosity ECLIPSE models with LGRs: no updating
• There is a limit of 99-coupled steps when performing 2-way
coupled simulations with ECLIPSE.
• For 2-way coupled simulations with ECLIPSE, models should be
stored on a local or shared drive when running on remote Linux
systems.
• Coupling with ECLIPSE will not work if ECLIPSE uses GSG grids.
• Coupled ECLIPSE case names must be less than or equal to 29
characters.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

• Automatic time-stepping in ECLIPSE can impact results from
ECLIPSE restarts. This can cause differences in two-way coupled
simulations. Consult NEXTSTEP keyword in the ECLIPSE
documentation for a solution.
GPU display • On Windows where the GPU is used for display and compute
capability, the maximum model size that can be run on a GPU is
either ((System Memory Size in MB - 512 MB) / 2) or the value of
PAGING_BUFFER_SEGMENT_SIZE, whichever is lower. The value
of PAGING_BUFFER_SEGMENT_SIZE varies according to the
Windows version, but is typically 2 GB.
• Querying for remote GPUs and running remote GPU simulations is
not supported on HPC.
• GPU querying and running is not supported on machines being
accessed over Microsoft remote desktop connections.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 49 15 June 2015

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Local grid refinement • Only regular Cartesian local grid refinements (i.e., Cartesian Nx,
Ny, Nz LGRs and Cartesian Dx, Dy, Dz LGRs) are available with this
release. Gradual (including logarithmic) LGRs, Coarsen LGRs and
Unstructured LGRs are not available
• Hierarchical/multi-level LGRs (that is, LGRs inside LGRs) are not
available with this release.
• Material models for LGR cells must be the same as for the master
cell.
• When a VISAGE case containing a local grid set is exported, the
source information used to create the local grid set in the Make
local grids process is removed from the system. Create a duplicate
before export if you want to retain details on how the local grid set
was created.
• Local grids that appear at the side boundaries of a model cannot
be used.
• When using local grid sets containing multiple local grids:

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

o If the bounds of the local grids intersect, the local grid set
cannot be used and must be combined into one local grid.
o If any of the local grids are touching another local grid, and
these grids have a different number of IJK divisions, then they
cannot be used.
• When using the Populate properties process to generate materials
within local grids that use the dip angle template, for example
friction angle and dilation angle, the values are not set. Use the
Calculator to override the values.

Reservoir Engineering
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Handling of nested INCLUDE files A nested INCLUDE (referencing one INCLUDE file within another
INCLUDE file) causes the second-level INCLUDE file to be ignored.
Workaround: Move the information from the nested INCLUDE file up
to the .data file or first-level INCLUDE.

Exploration Geology
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
General After copying/pasting a Play Chance Mapping, Prospect Assessment,
Prospect Summing, Petroleum Systems 1D, or Petroleum Systems 3D
object in the Input pane, the “Edit existing” area in the process
dialogs is not updated immediately, i.e., does not show the copied
object (only while the process is open).
Templates and units for There is a potential legacy issue with conflicting units of
"Temperature/Heat capacity" data "Temperature/Heat capacity" data imported to PetroMod in versions
prior to Petrel 2012.2.
Workaround: Re-import any overlays that were imported prior to
2012.2.
3D simulation is not possible An error message generated by the simulator states that the facies
when facies values are missing property has undefined values in valid elements.
where zone geometry is defined Workaround: Create property "Zone (hierarchy)" using "geometrical
modeling" and compare the statistics of both properties, facies and

zones hierarchy. If the "Total number of defined cell in the entire
property, including local grids" is less for the facies properties than
for the zones hierarchy property, the facies in the simple grid will
have missing values, which can lead to problems during simulation.
The undefined facies cells can be found by using "Settings for
'Properties" -> "Filter" and switching off "Defined values only".
Play chance mapping - If you work with PCM in the Reference project tool, after a CRS
Coordinate reference system conversion, the resulting surface may be distorted or has a rotation
(CRS) conversion possible wrong angle. The reason is that the master grid may no longer be
results orthogonal, which is mandatory for PCM to work properly.
Workaround: Specify the master grid after the CRS conversion and
run PCM again.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 51 15 June 2015

Drilling: General
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Drilling structure and slots Drilling structures do not have Studio support. Wells associated with
drilling structures that are pushed to Studio will lose the reference to
the drilling structure.
Studio index for drilling risks For the drilling risk objects that are created in the Petrel releases
prior to 2015.1, the TVD values of those drilling risks are stored
incorrectly in the data model. When the old risk objects are indexed
by Studio, the TVD values of those drilling risk data could be wrong in
the Studio index detail. This could also affect the result of risk
filtering by TVD hole depth.
Workaround: To correct the old risk TVD data, which is either created
in the Petrel releases prior to 2015.1 or loaded through the Studio
index, you can open the settings of the old risk objects with Petrel
2015.1 or any later releases, and click Apply or OK. The risk TVD
values will be recomputed and stored correctly in your local Petrel
project.

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Deleting drilling risks Deleting the drilling risks folder may take up to one minute,
depending on the number of risk objects. The issue is caused by risk
visualization performance improvement.
Workaround: To avoid a potential slowdown, a project containing
multiple drilling risks should be open with no windows open (hold the
Ctrl key when opening a project).

Drilling: Well Design

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Well plan display in an If an Intersection window is associated with a curved surface, the
intersection window display result of certain plans might be incorrect.
Plan grid convergence values In the 2012.1 release, if a project was set up with mixed units, the
grid convergence for the plan might be calculated incorrectly. This
issue was fixed in the 2012.2 release. However, if a project is saved
with the 2012.1 version and is opened with any newer version, an
incorrect grid convergence will occur.
Workaround: To correct this, you must trigger a plan recalculation by
editing the plan (with Well path designer, dragger or Inspector) in a
3D window.
Transferring plans or targets When transferring well plans or targets between Studio and Petrel
between Studio and Petrel projects, if the Studio repository CRS is incompatible with the Petrel
projects project CRS, after a data round trip (Petrel project > Studio
repository > Petrel project), the plans or targets could mismatch
with the original data.
Workaround: Choose or set the Studio repository in a compatible CRS
with the Petrel project.

Petrel Platform Release Notes 2015.1 52 15 June 2015

Drilling: Real Time
Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Transferring data over different For some particular data sets, when one incoming log in the server
index ranges contains multiple passes of data over different index ranges, if the
deeper data range is downloaded before the shallower or earlier data
range, the shallower or earlier data might be skipped during data
transfer. For more details, see the online Help.

Drilling: Well Positioning

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Trajectory uncertainty • If the start point of the plan trajectory is NOT at the same XYZ
location as the well head, you cannot calculate out the EOU for it
in Petrel.
Workaround: Create a new well using the start point of the
trajectory as the well head location, and then copy the plan to

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

the new well.
• When an EOU cannot be calculated out, an empty
EOU object is still created. However, it does not
contain any EOU data.
Showing EOU and VOU • Displaying a lot of EOU or volume of uncertainty (VOU) might
cause performance issues.
Workaround: To avoid performance issues, you can hide the EOU
or VOU display by toggling off the Show EOU or Show VOU
button, or you can display only the VOU, without EOU.
• When EOU and VOU are displayed at the same time, the shape of
the EOU might not be correctly visualized.
Workaround: To correctly visualize them together, you need to
toggle on the Orthogonal camera mode on the 3D window
toolbar.
Showing No-go zone • The 3D No-go space is visualized by connecting all the No-go
zone cross sections from wellhead to TD. As a limitation of this
algorithm, the No-go zone beyond the offset well TD cross
section cannot be visualized although there is some extended
trajectory uncertainty.
• The No-go zone only gives you a view of collision hit. On the No-
go zone boundary, there might be small calculation bias
compared to the Anti-collision result. The actual collision risk
level must be confirmed using the Anti-collision scan.
Making driller’s target You cannot make the driller’s target if the associated geological
target was created from a polygon.

Studio: Studio Server

Affected Feature Issue or Limitation
Data transfer Due to the interdependency of some seismic data items, there is a
case where transferring back seismic data items (listed under
mandatory OCRS) to Petrel is being blocked after performing CRS
consolidation in Studio.
This occurs due to a CRS mismatch between the seismic data being
transferred and the seismic 3D survey in Petrel.
It is recommended that you perform the same CRS consolidation on
the Petrel side to update the OCRS of the original data in Petrel and
try to transfer the data again.
Match rules on lateral wells The match rules defined for wells do not apply to lateral wells during
the Studio transfers. Only main wells are impacted.

Licensing

Schlumberger Private – Customer Use

Petrel 2015 requires the new 2015 version of the Schlumberger Licensing Tool.
• Petrel 2015 will not work against a Schlumberger 2014 or earlier License Server. You must use a
Schlumberger 2015 License Server.
• All older versions of Petrel will continue to work against the 2015 License Server.
• The new 2015 server is available from the licensing folder of the Petrel Distribution.

A Petrel dongle and a valid license are required to run this release.

Petrel licenses incorporate two important dates, the maintenance expiry date and the license expiry date. You can
verify the validity of your license, as follows:

FEATURE Petrel_01220255_MAAAdLyku/aUAslbsis<yyyy.mm> <d-mmm-yyyy>.<#>

Where
• <yyyy.mm> is the maintenance expiry year and month
• <d-mmm-yyyy> is the license expiry day, month, year
• <#> is the number of licenses

The license is valid to run Petrel up to the license expiry date; it allows you to run any Petrel version that is
released before the maintenance expiry date. All license inquiries should be made to your SIS account manager,
