Soal Latihan 2

Mata kuliah Teknik Lingkungan

Semester Ganjil 2019/2020
Diberikan (16 September 2019). Dikumpulkan (waktu UTS)

1. (6.2) An unconfined aquifer is 10 m thick and is being pumped so that one observation
well placed at a distance of 76 m shows a drawdown of 0.5 m. On the opposite side of the
extraction well is another observation well, 100 m from the extraction well, and this well
shows a drawdown of 0.3 m. Assume the coefficient of permeability is 50 m 3/day-m2.
a. What is the discharge of the extraction well?
b. Suppose the well at 100 m from the extraction well is now pumped. Show with a
sketch what this will do with the drawdown.
c. Suppose the aquifer sits on an aquaclude that has a slope of 1/100. Show with a
sketch how this would change with the drawdown.

2. (6.6) Three pipes, each 1500 ft long, are arranged in parallel. Two have diameters of 6 in.
each, and the diameter of the third is 10 in. All three have a Hazen-Williams C value of
100. Find the diameter of the equivalent pipe that is also 1500 ft long.

3. (6.8) Given two identical pumps with the characteristics shown in Fig. 6-14, find the
discharge for a head of 100 ft if (a) both pumps are operated in series and (b) both pumps
are operated in parallel.

4. (7.2) An engineer suggests the following design parameters for a city's proposed rapid
sand filter: flow rate = 0.6 m3/s, and loading rate to filter = 125.0 m3/day-m2. How much
surface area is required for the filter? Select the number of equally sized filters, and size
these filters assuming a width-to-length ratio of 1.0 to 2.5 with a maximum surface area
of each filter tank being 75 m2.

5. (7.3) A flocculator is designed to treat 25 mgd. The flocculator basin is 100 ft long, 50 ft
wide, and 20 ft deep and is equipped with 12-in. paddles 48 ft long. The paddles are
attached to four horizontal shafts, two paddles per shaft, their center line is 8.0 ft from the
shaft, and they rotate at 2.5 rpm. Assume the velocity of the water is 25% of the velocity
of the paddles, the water temperature is 5OoF, and the drag coefficient is 1.7. Calculate
(1) the time of flocculation, (2) the velocity differential between the water and the paddle,
(3) the hydraulic power (and subsequent energy consumption), and (4) the values of G
and GF.

6. (8.2) An 18-in. sewer, n = 0.013, is 15,000 ft long and laid on a uniform grade.
Difference in elevation of the two ends is 4.8 ft. Find velocity and discharge when the
sewer is flowing 0.6 full.

7. (8.5) A 12-in. sewer, n = 0.013, is laid on a grade of 3.0 ft/1000 ft. Find the velocity
required grade, according to the Manning formula, if n = 0.015? Find the velocity and
rate of discharge and rate of discharge when the sewer is flowing 0.4 full.
8. (9.1) The following data were reported on the operation of a wastewater treatment plant:

Influent (mg/L) Effluent (mg/L)

BOD5 200 20
SS 220 15
P 10 0.5

a) What percent removal was experienced for each of these?

b) What type of treatment plant will produce such an effluent? Draw a block diagram
showing the treatment steps.

9. (9.7) Draw block diagrams of the unit operations necessary to treat the following wastes
to effluent levels of BOD5 = 20 mg/L, SS = 20 mg/L, P = 1 mg/L. Assume all BOD is
due to dissolved chemicals, and that all SS are inert.

Waste BOD Suspended Solids Phosphorus

(mg/L) (mg/L) (mg/L)
Domestic 200 200 10
Chemical industry 40,000 0 0
Pickle cannery 0 300 1
Fertilizer mfg 300 300 200

10. ( 9.8) The success of an activated sludge system depends on settling the solids in the final
settling tank. If the sludge in a system started to bulk and not settle very well, and the SS
concentration of the return activated sludge dropped from 10,000 to 4,000 mg/L,
a) What will this do to the MLSS?
b) What will this in turn do to the BOD removal, and why?
