Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE)

Exam: Mid , Trimester: Fall, Year: 2020
Course: EEE 203/EEE 2201, Title: Energy Conversion I, Sec: A
Marks: 40, Time: 1:00 Hours
Question 1, 2 and 3 is mandatory. Answer any one between 4 and 5.

(1) a) A magnetic circuit constructed of sheet steel has an average length of 1.3 m and cross sectional [5]
CO1 area 0.024 m2. A 50 turn coil wound on the ring has a resistance of 0.82  and draws 2A
current from a DC supply. If the reluctance of the core is 7425 A-t/Wb, calculate-
i) Flux density,
ii) Voltage applied.

b) A single phase transformer when supplied from a 220 V, 50 Hz source produces a hysteresis [5]
loss of 50 W. To reduce the loss by 30% of the rated value, the transformer is connected to a
new supply of 45 Hz. Calculate the percentage change in supply voltage to achieve the reduced
loss.

(2) A 10 kVA, 50 Hz, 4800/240 V transformer is tested by the open circuit and short circuit tests. [10]
CO3 The test data are as follows:

Open Circuit Test (Low Side) Short Circuit Test (High Side)

Voc = 230 V Vsc = 172.5 V

Ioc = 14A Isc = 20.1 A
Poc = 60 W Psc = 1046 W

Determine from these test data -

i) Magnetizing reactance and equivalent core loss resistance with referred to low side,
ii) Equivalent resistance and reactance with referred to high side,
iii) Efficiency if the transformer is delivering half rated load at 0.9 pf lagging
iv) Voltage regulation if the transformer is delivering rated load at 0.9 pf lagging.
.
(3) Two single phase, 50 Hz transformers ‘A’ and ‘B’ are to be operated in parallel. The respective [10]
CO3 power, no load voltage ratios and respective impedance as obtained from the transformer
nameplate are:

Transformer kVA Rating Voltage Ratio %R %X

A 80 2200-460 1.60 3.10
B 250 2200-460 1.20 4.10

Determine from these data -

i) Rated high side current of each transformer,
ii) The percent of the total bank current drawn by each transformer,
iii) Determine whether any of these transformers are overheated if the bank supplies a 280
kW load at 0.85 pf lagging

(4) A 100 kVA, 50 Hz, 8000/277 V, single phase transformer has the following parameters
CO2 expressed in ohms: [10]

RHS = 5 XHS = 6 XM, HS = 10, 000

RLS = 0.005 XLS = 0.006 Rfe, HS = 50, 000
Assume that this transformer is supplying rated load at 277 V and 0.85 pf lagging.

i) Sketch the equivalent circuit of the transformer referred to low side with values of the
parameters,
ii) Determine the input impedance if the load is disconnected,
iii) Exciting current and its two components.

(5) a) Do you expect a 400 Hz transformer to be smaller or larger in size compared to a 50 Hz [4]
CO2 transformer of same rating? Justify your answer.

b) A 2300/115 V, 4.5 kVA step down transformer has a cross sectional area of 50 cm2 and a mean [6]
length of 66.7 cm. The primary voltage causes a magnetic flux density of 1.5 T. The
transformer is designed to have an induced EMF of 2.5 V/turn. Assuming an ideal transformer,
calculate-
i) i) Number of high side and low side turns,
ii) The operating frequency.
