Lesson Plan 8th grade Science Teacher Name: Betul Ulusoy

Lesson 1[40m] Lesson 2[40m] Lesson 3[40m] Lesson 4[40m] Lesson 5[40m] Lesson 6[40m]

Student Expectations: The student is expected to: Identify that protons determine an element’s identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including
- Things students will know by the end of reactivity.
the lesson
- Can be found in the Lesson Guide

Spiraled TEKS: 8.5B Identify that protons determine an elements identity, and valence electrons determine its
- Concepts taught in previous grades chemical properties, including reactivity.
used for accessing prior knowledge

Content Objective: TSWLT identify what determines an element’s identity and its chemical properties like reactivity
Derived from TEKS

Language Objective: ELPS: Learning Strategies: (1A) Use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in
Derived from ELPS English.
Listening: (2A) Distinguish sounds and intonation patterns of English with increasing ease.
Speaking: (3A) Practice producing sounds of newly acquired vocabulary, such as long and short
vowels, silent letters, and consonant clusters to pronounce English

Academic Vocabulary: Valence Shell: The outer shell of any atom

From Lesson Guide Valence Electron(s): electron(s) in the outer shell of an atom responsible for the chemical properties of the atom
Subatomic Particles: scientific term when talking about protons, neutrons, and/or electrons.
AMU: Atomic Mass Unit is the term used to define the mass of a subatomic particle (Protons and Neutrons)
Chemical Properties: any materials’ properties that become evident during a chemical reaction.
Physical Properties: characteristics of matter that can be detected or measured with the senses.
Location: position in space
Matter: any substance which has mass and occupies space.
Mass: the quantity of matter in an object

- “Hook”
- Access Prior Knowledge Review syllabus
- Incorporate Trade Books as part of
lesson
- Mini Lab Demonstration

Explore: STEMscopes - Explore Activity (8.5B) –

- Scientific investigations •Preparation Note: We don't use beans. We
- Demonstration/modeling of concepts will use a red-colored marker, crayon, or map
- Hands-on activities pencil. I will laminate or place the Atomic
- Questioning strategies Structure page in a sheet protector for students
to work with, or have them work straight on the
Journal pages
•I will work through the pre-completed
questions in the Explore Journal together with
the students. I will explain the thinking process
of how to locate the information, and how
electrons are arranged in the energy levels (2
on the first, 8 thereafter).
•The students will complete the next blank
question (# 5) on their own.I will check with
them that they have the right idea, then let
them proceed independently again. 10-15
minutes.
•After Part I is done, the students will read pg.4
of the Student Guide. I will explain “Valence”
electrons and how they affect the reactivity of
an atom. I will highlight the last paragraph on
pg.4 and the tendencies of atoms to lose, gain,
or share electrons in order to reach neutral
state. I will allow 15-20 minutes for students to
work through this part.
•We will discuss questions #2, #4, #5, & #6,
then students will move to Part III. I will allow
another 15-20 minutes for this part.
