1. A car is moving at a constant velocity of 80 km/h. Determine the drag force acting on the
car if (a) the air is calm, (b) wind is blowing against the direction of motion of the car at 30
km/h, and (c) wind is blowing in the same direction of motion of the car at 50 km/h.
Assume for all condition, CD=0.35 and air density, 1.225kg/m3. The car is as shown below.

2. The resultant of the pressure and wall shear forces acting on a body is measured to be 700
N, making 35° with the direction of flow. Determine the drag and the lift forces acting on
the body.

3. A light ball has a diameter of 50 cm and is subjected to normal winds up to 150 km/h at
10°C and 100 kPa. The ball is attached with a rope and subjected to a load. Determine the
drag force acting on the ball. Determine also the maximum mass of the load that can be
lifted up by the ball. Disregard the drag on the rope.

4. The weight of a thin flat plate 50 cm × 50 cm in size is balanced by a counterweight that has
a mass of 2 kg, as shown in figure below. Now a fan is turned on, and air at 1 atm and 25°C
flows downward over both surfaces of the plate with a free-stream velocity of 10 m/s.
Determine the mass of the counterweight that needs to be added in order to balance the
plate in this case.

5. a) A Massive airplane is about to escape from a disastrous island which located in Jurassic
Park. In the airplane, there are few crews including famous scientist and explorer, Indiana
Jones and a lot of equipments which is quite heavy. The wing area for the plane is 60 m 2.
The airplane mass itself is 10000 kg; ten crew with average weight of 80kg and 2 tonne of
equipment. The normal distance for the airplane (with crew and load) to take off is 200 m
and time taken is 5s. Determine lift coefficient of the airplane and the acceleration. Assume
the airplane move from rest with constant acceleration and the air density is 1.184 kg/m 3

b) The situation become worse as the airport length is reduced by 100 m from original
airport length of 280 m, due to earthquake created by Tyrannosaurus. Using the
acceleration and lift coefficient determined from (a), determine how many loads should be
removed from the plane in order to escape.

c) Determine the Power needed to overcome such drag force for case (b) if the drag
coefficient is 0.3
