What does a router do? (5 points) _Routers move data in between LANS and matches match networks
to destinations.
What is the difference between a Layer 2 Switch and a Layer 3 Switch? (5 points) __Layer 3 gives
routing capabilities.
What is multicasting? (5 points) __It is when a message is sent to every computer but only MAC
addresses in the group can process the data.
How does DNS differ from WINS? (10 points) ___WINS is specific to Microsoft systems and uses
hostnames to match to IP addresses and makes a new request each time the hostname is queried,
whereas DNS is platform independent and uses FQDN to match to IP addresses and can forward to
another server if the current one is unable to resolve a search and stores the result to make a faster
search the next time the hostname is queried. DNS also uses static IP addresses whereas WINS uses
dynamic IP addresses.
A. List the following type of IP networks based on Classful Addresses (class A,B,C) (10 points)
191.15.251.31 Class B
221.11.31.181 Class C
110.116.250.254 Class A
List the broadcast address and network address of each network above
_191.15.0.0 / 191.15.255.255
_221.11.31.0 / 221.11.31.255
_110.0.0.0 / 110.255.255.255
What is required to allow host to communicate without static IP’s assigned to them (dynamic
addresses)? (10 points) ___The DHCP will automatically assign IP addresses to the host. You can use a
network router or LAN to communicate with other computers within that same network.
List the 3 types of messages a switch will flood out to all of its ports. (10 points) Unknown Unicast
Traffic, Multicast traffic, and Broadcast traffic.
Explain what an ARP Table, Routing Table, and CAM Table are: (10 points)
A.__Address Resolution Protocol- Sends out an IP address and requests a MAC address. The
Table then lists the MAC address to the IP.

______________________________________________________
B___The Routing Table lists the necessary information for IP addresses/MAC addresses to
communicate.

C____Content Addressable Memory- Match MAC addresses to physical switch ports and
forwards traffic to only the port the desination MAC address is on.

What are the settings to connect into a switch/router via a serial cable? (10 points)
List the Network address and Broadcast address and Subnet Mask (decimal form) for the following
10.11.12.13/28 (10 points)
N __10.11.12.0_______________________________________________________
B __10.11.12.255________________________________________________

List and define the 5 Port states of a switch when using STP: (10 points)
Blocking: Takes 20 seconds; For that time the port is only listening and processing BPDU’s, no
other traffic allowed.
Listening: Takes 15 seconds; Double checks topology, and only processes BPDU’s.
Learning: Takes 15 seconds; Still processing BPDU’s and updating the CAM table but not
forwarding the new information.
Forwarding: Switch port operates normally.
Disabled: No longer participating in STP manually and can not send BPDU’s.
