As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:
This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.
This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.

Directions: Read each question carefully. Choose the letter that corresponds to the
correct answer.
1. A hiker is 400 meters away from the base of the radio tower. The angle of
elevation to the top of the tower is 46𝑜. How high is the tower?
A. 414.41 𝑚 B. 414.11 𝑚 C. 414.31 𝑚 D. 414.21 𝑚
2. A 6 ft. man casts a 10.2 ft. shadow. What is the angle of elevation of the sun?
A. 30𝑜29′ B. 30𝑜27′ C. 30𝑜28′ D. 30𝑜30′
3. Richard, Robert, Roger, Michael, Nicole, Arnold, and Nelsen placed an 18-foot
ladder against a side of a building. The base of the ladder was positioned at
an angle of 68𝑜 with the ground for secure footing. What is the distance of the
base of the ladder to the side of the building?
A. 5.74 𝑓𝑡 B.6.74 𝑓𝑡 C. 7.74 𝑓𝑡 D. 8.74 𝑓𝑡
4. Same problem with no.2, what is the distance far up the side of the building
the ladder would reach?
A. 16.69 𝑓𝑡 B. 16.59 𝑓𝑡 C. 16. 7 𝑓𝑡 D. 16.49 𝑓𝑡
5. David Pascual, Andrew Andino, Benjie Aguilar, and Kiel Resureccion are
joining the Mandurah Action Sports Games with about 12,000 people coming
over to witness the event. The ramp is 64 ft. long and 31 ft. high. What is the
measure of the angle that the ramp makes with the ground?
A. 28𝑜 B. 28𝑜58′ c. 28𝑜48′ D. 29𝑜
RECAP
Direction: Determine whether the following statements represent an Angle of
Elevation or Angle of Depression.
1. Two points on the same side of a tree are 19.8 m apart. Their angles
to the top of the tree are 21o11’ from one point and 16o17’ from the other point.
2. The angle of a boy standing from a point on a lighthouse 30.5 m
above from the surface of the water makes an angle of 3o17’with the sea.
3. A bird sits on top of a 5-meter lamppost. The angle from the bird to
the feet of an observer standing away from the lamppost is 35o22’.
4. A stargazer saw the planet Jupiter at midnight and assumed that
his angle to the planet in the sky is 43o17’.
5. From an airplane at an altitude of 1,200 meters, its angle in
connection with a rock from the ground is 28o18’.
LESSON
In the previous self-learning module, you have learned how to illustrate the
angles of elevation and depression. Now, in this self-learning module, we are going
to solve real-life problems involving the concept of angle of elevation.
Examples:
Kite
1,250 m x
1,250 m x
43𝑜15′
Man Ground 43𝑜15′
Solution:
𝑥
sin 43𝑜15′ =
1
2 1250 sin 43𝑜15′
5

𝑥 = 1250(0.6852)
𝑥=
𝒙 = 𝟖𝟓𝟔. 𝟒𝟖 𝒎
2. The Philippine Arena, the world’s largest indoor arena has a height of 65 meters.
Suppose an observer is standing 30 meters away from the entrance, what would be
his angle of elevation to the roof of the arena?
Roof of arena
65 m
65 m
θ
30 m observer θ
30 m
Solution:
65
tan 𝜃 =
30
tan 𝜃 = 2.1667
𝜃 = tan−1 2.1667
𝜽 = 𝟔𝟓𝒐𝟏𝟑′
ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE!
Directions: Solve for the value of x. Give the lengths of the sides in two decimal places.
1.

2.

For numbers 3, 4, and 5, solve for θ and give the values of the angle in degrees and
minutes.
3.

4.

We use the angle of elevation in solving real-life problems if the angle is formed
above the surface. As the name itself suggests, the angle of elevation is so formed
that it is above the observer’s eye.
VALUING
REFLECTION: (Journal Writing)
“Success is not how high you have climbed,
but how you make a positive difference to the world.”
— Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
In your own opinion, what are the positive differences that you have made
within yourself that make you feel that you are successful?
