At the end of this lesson, I should be able to: hero-definition-philippines
1. know modern day Rizal.
2. discover one’s hero potentials.

Productivity Tip:
Create a designated work space – that is not your bed. This is essential in making sure you get the tasks
done. If you’re planning on doing something school related, get out of bed and sit at a desk or the kitchen
table — really anywhere that isn’t your bed. Getting dressed for the day like you would if you weren’t stuck at
home is a great way to get yourself into a productive mindset.

Poverty not a hindrance to UP Summa cum laude's success

MANILA – For Alexander John Cruz, summa cum laude and valedictorian of the University of the Philippines’
chemical engineering class of 2014, poverty is not a hindrance to succeed in life. Cruz made the statement as
he shared his story in an interview on “Umagang Kay Ganda”.
Born and raised in Nueva Ecija, Cruz said he initially planned on continuing his studies in the province
because his family cannot afford to send him to a university in Metro Manila.
But because he has been doing well in high school – he graduated valedictorian – Cruz was offered a
DOST scholarship for free.
“Kaso
free tuition fee. Tapos meron pong monthly stipend,” he added.Cruz’ mother, aunts and cousins strived to fill
the role left by his father, which he never knew.

This and the daily struggle of poverty were among the many problems Cruz had to go through as a
student.
Feeling “overwhelmed” and “fulfilled” that he was able to finish at
the top of his class in college, Cruz said he hopes to give back to the community by being part of the academe.
mag-give back sa bansa by being a professor in UP, bumalik sa academe para mag-inspire ng mga kabataan
mga endeavors,” he ended.

Efren Penaflorida: The Kariton Klasrum

Born to a poor family, Efren experienced living in a

barong-barong near a city dumpsite. He took the
challenge to overcome poverty, realizing the importance
of basic education and the advantage of just being able
to read. He used his resources and the best of his
abilities to reach 1,500 kids. It is truly amazing.

“Each person has a hidden hero within; you just have to

look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the
hero to the next one in need.” I look around me and see
ordinary heroes in ordinary street clothes, helping an
elderly woman carry her stuff, returning extra change to
the cashier, treating the waiters and security guards with
respect.
In the end, we all don’t have to have superpowers or be
dead to be considered heroes. Every little right thing we
do that contributes to the betterment of our country and
our fellow Filipinos is heroic. Despite the bad news that we see and read about every day, we can still be each
other’s heroes and make a difference in the lives of those around us.

“So to each and every person inside this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is
waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell
to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream, as I am the change that I dream, and collectively
we are the change that this world needs to be,” proudly stated Efren Peñaflorida in his CNN Hero of the Year
acceptance speech.
