Amy Cuddy, an American psychologist, has been doing some interesting research on non-verbal
communication, that is, body language. Her online talk on this subject has received over 18 million
views so far.
She has studied how people interact with each other, how they shake hands or make eye contact, for
example. What her research has shown is that our body language leads other people to make
important judgments about us. Unless we are more aware of our non-verbal communication, we won’t
make a good impression on others, and this can affect what job we get or who asks us out.
Cuddy has also recognized significant differences between the body language of men and of women.
In her class of graduates at the Harvard Business School, she noticed how the male students sat in a
way that displayed great confidence, while the female students displayed far less confidence. And she
noticed something else. If students don’t participate in class, their overall grade will suffer, because
class participation counts for 50% of the final grade. In spite of this, the female students were much
less likely to raise their hand in class.
Through a series of experiments, Cuddy has discovered that by changing our body language, we can
become more successful.
