Conclusion

In conclusion, the aims of the experiment were to establish the shift in enthalpy ( ΔH) of
three exothermic reactions and to apply Hess 'Law to the three exothermic reactions. Based on
the obtained findings, it can be inferred that all the reactions are exothermic as they release heat.
This is because all the results of each section of the experiment indicate that from its initial
temperature, the temperature increases. The value of the shift in enthalpy is = -16.736kJ/mol for
part A. Then the shift in enthalpy is ΔH= -83.68kJ/mol for part B and ΔH = -100.416kJ/mol for
part C. The sum of the enthalpy change for part A and part B does not equal to the value of
enthalpy change of part C. So, the reactions do not obey to the Hess Law.

Recommendation

There are several steps to address the potential errors that occurred while carrying the
experiment or to fix them. First of all, it is easier to use a digital thermometer than to use a
simple thermometer. This is to ensure the acquisition of even more specific temperature changes.
Other than that it should be adjusted first before using to ensure correct reading of the analytical
balance. Additionally, the dissolution of NaOH solid should be done quickly to avoid melting as
it easily melts. Finally, to ensure that the fan is switched off at all times, so that the heat from the
experiment does not easily lose. By doing the above steps, it can help get a more accurate
reading while the experiment is being carried out.
