The Seven Continents

The largest continent on Earth is Asia. It covers one-third of all the land on Earth. There are 48 countries in Asia.
Did you know that China and India are the world’s most populous countries, with around 1 billion people living
in each? 60% of the world’s population live in Asia.

The hottest continent on Earth is Africa. It has 54 countries. The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the
world. It makes up 25% of the total area of Africa. Did you know that the Arabic word for desert is Sahara?

There are 44 countries in Europe. Some of these countries still have kings, queens, princes and princesses.
One-quarter of the world’s population live in Europe. The Mediterranean Sea divides Europe and Africa and the
Ural mountains divide Europe and Asia. Europe and Asia are sometimes described as one area called Eurasia.

Antarctica is almost entirely covered in ice. It is the continent at the South Pole. Temperatures can dip to below
-80 degrees Celsius. Antarctica is the fifth largest continent on Earth and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean.
Animals such as penguins, seals, and seabirds live in Antarctica.

The smallest continent on Earth is Australia. The centre of Australia is called the outback. Few people live here
because it is very dry. Animals such as kangaroos, emus and dingoes live in the outback. Dingoes are wild dogs.

North America is the third largest continent on Earth. It is made up of the United States, Canada, Mexico and
the Caribbean islands. The world’s biggest island, Greenland, is in North America. The Grand Canyon is also in
North America. It is one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes.

South America is the fourth largest continent on Earth. The Andes is in South America. It is the world’s longest
mountain range. Brazil is the largest country in South America. The Amazon rainforest is in South America. It is
the largest rainforest in the world and covers 30% of the total area of South America.
