Using a microscope
General rule: Never touch the lenses and the inside of the eye piece! They are sensitive to scratches and very
expensive to replace!

If you want to see something quickly and easily you must follow these instructions every time.

1. Always start with the smallest lens (lowest power)

2. Put your slide on the stage and the part you want to look at in the middle, where the light shines through.
3. Looking from the side turn the focusing knob to bring the stage close to the lens.
4. Now look down the eye piece and gradually move the stage away from the lens until the slide is in focus.
5. If you want to use a higher magnification, make sure that the piece of the object you want to look at is in the middle
of your field of view. Then swing a higher powered lens into place over the stage. Focus only with the small
focusing knob.

Making a microscope slide

1. Make sure that the microscope slide you are going to use is clean.
2. Put the object in the centre of the slide. The object must be thin enough so that light can pass through.
3. If the object is not liquid, you must first put a drop of water onto the slide and add the object to this drop.
4. Now gently lower a cover slip over the liquid on the slide. This keeps the object flat and prevents the lens from
getting dirty. Make sure to not trap any air bubbles underneath the slip.
5. Finally use filter paper to mop up any excess liquid on the slide or on the slip.
