NOISE AND VIBRATION Practical

(SMB 31303) NO: 2

Title: Experimental Modal Analysis

1. Objectives a) To measure the dynamics properties (natural frequency, damping and mode shape)
of a plate
b) To differentiate the natural frequency of component (plate) in free-free condition
and clamped end condition.
2. Equipment/ No Items Quantity
Tools 1 Vibrating plate Aluminum (wx/xt) 1
2 Accelerometer 1
3 Impact Hammer 1
4 LMS Scadas DAQ system 1
6 Desktop/ Laptop 1

3. Procedure
1. Make sure all safety procedure is followed before conducting any activities.

2. Setup the equipment as shown in Figure 1.
3. Clamp an Aluminum plate using G- clamp or clamp jig.
4. Connect LMS Scadas Mobile to the laptop and connect impact hammer to the
channel 1 and accelerometer to channel 2.
5. Switch ON the computer and LMS Scadas Mobile (DAQ system)
6. Open/Launch LMS Test lab Impact test.
7. Open geometry module and construct a plate geometry using node, line and
area.
8. Set channel configuration and key in sensitivity value of impact hammer and
accelerometer.
9. Connect LMS Scadas Mobile to the laptop and connect impact hammer to the
channel 1 and accelerometer to channel 2.
10. Switch ON the computer and LMS Scadas Mobile (DAQ system)
11. Open/Launch LMS Test lab Impact test.
12. Open geometry module and construct a plate geometry using node, line and
area.
13. Set channel configuration and key in sensitivity value of impact hammer and
accelerometer.
14. Calibrate the accelerometer using accelerometer calibrator (handheld
miniature shaker.)
15. Locate accelerometer to the tip of plate vertically using adhesive wax
16. Set the impact scope and impact set-up.
17. Start measure by knocking at the node marked on the plate. Repeat
measurement until all nodes are knocked.
18. Open Modal Analysis module, select all data measurement and do the curve
fitting using Time MDOF, Manually select stable peak that indicate the natural
frequency.
19. Save the natural frequency, damping and mode shapes.
20. Repeat the experiment for plate under free-free condition by hanging using
rubber band or rope.
21. Write a group report for this experiment consists of introduction, methodology,
result, discussion and conclusion.
