Bird Quiz Answers
1. How many species of owls might one find in Ohio (residents, migrants and irruptive) in a
good owl year? 8 species are possible - Barn, Eastern Screech, Great Horned, Snowy,
Barred, Long-eared, Short-eared, Northern Saw-whet
2. Where are owls ears located? (select one)
* Top of the head * Sides of the head
* Front of the face * Owls don’t have ears
3. What is an owl pellet? The indigestible items (fur, feathers, bones, teeth, chitinous
exoskeletons of invertebrates) of prey that had been eaten. Pellets are regurgitated
about a day after feeding. Pellets are useful in determining prey species of owls.
4. Owl eggs hatch (choose one)

● Stations band resident species and neo-tropical migrants that migrate through or breed in
Ohio
● Includes Indigo Bunting, Wood Thrush, Black-and-White Warbler and Chestnut-sided Warbler
● Distribute funds between banding stations or all funds go to one station
● Donations fund equipment, staff and public education of the local community.

Spring Warbler Challenge 2021
● Register for the Spring Warbler Challenge
● Look for warblers during the dates of April 1 through May 31. We will use the
honor system for your sightings.
● Remain in the county in which you live, but you may travel throughout the county.
● Bird on your own or with a couple of others. Follow COVID-19 gathering guidelines -
wear masks, remain at least 6 feet apart, do not gather in large groups, and wash hands
frequently or use hand sanitizer.
● Keep track of warblers using the chart from the link which lists warbler species, as well
as date and place viewed.
● Entries are due no later than June 12, 2021 to info@wcaudubon.org

The entry with the most species will receive a Western Cuyahoga Audubon membership for
the year or if already a member, will have membership extended for another year (a $40.00
value) and an Urban Birding Cleveland t-shirt. If there is a tie, a name will be selected
randomly from the tied entries.
