Notes on sim limitations & noteworthy features
Whilst the Black Hawk has been made to take full advantage of every current technology available to the
sim, we at Virtavia have still had to contend with the hard coded limitations of the sim engine.

Noteworthy features:

 The Black Hawk is our first rotary product to make full use of our 3D RealGauge technology.

 The cockpit is modelled in ultra-realistic detail and features full night lighting textures & effects.

 The MFD has been sculpted to perfectly emulate the real-world H-60 MFD system.

 Included are 8 beautifully detailed paint schemes and 7 model variants (6 for FS9).

 The stabilator and systems operate as they do on real-world airframes.

 The cockpit features realistic and high-resolution digital gauges.

 MH-60K probe can be operated using the tail hook key

 Pilot visibility can be toggled using the water rudder key

 The input of three H-60 personnel was used in order to ensure a high level of accuracy
throughout the package.

 Simulated WX1000+ StormScope

 Brake pedal animations

 Fully modelled cabin (FSX only)

 7 interior and 5 exterior preset camera views (FSX only)

 FSX DX10 compatible model complete with interior self-shadowing, realistic spec and shine, and
custom bump mapping to bring every rivet and surface to life.

Limitations in FSX:

 Lights can appear to differ in position when viewed from different viewpoints, such as the tower
view. This is a known FSX issue, and not an issue with the model.

Limitations in FS9:

 The FS9 version has a lower level of detail in certain areas in the virtual cockpit. This is simply
because FS9 cannot cope with the level of detail that FSX can.

Introduction
Introduction
The H-60 evolved from experience in Vietnam for the need for a larger and more powerful battle worthy
helicopter. The basic design has evolved into many sub types, ranging from medical, troop carrying,
submarine hunting, military assault, fire fighting, police and passenger carrying in both the civil and VIP
markets. Sales of the Blackhawk now cover 19 nations across the globe, surpassed only by the ageing
Sea King. The Black Hawk is the first Virtavia rotary product to feature the ultra-realistic RealGauge
technology, allowing for perfect 3D gauges throughout the virtual cockpit.

The product contains versions for both Flight Simulator 9 and Flight Simulator X. The FSX version is a full-
featured FSX release, including all of our now standard technologies such as cockpit self shadowing, HDR
bloom effects, and bump mapping.

Installation
An easy installation is provided by way of installer. Simply double click the installer exe file, and follow
the on screen prompts. The Black Hawk will be installed to the default FSX or FS9 directory.

The visual model, textures and cockpit were created by Virtavia.

The flight model was created by Michael Davies.

The sounds were expertly crafted by Turbine Sound Studios.

Our thanks extend to the H-60 crew that offered their input on this project, and to the dedicated beta
testers that scanned various versions with their trained eyes! Thank-you to William Ortis for his help
with the gauges.

Package Information

RealGauge Technology & the 2D panel

“RealGauge” is our own version of the little used, but very impressive 3D gauge technology. Each gauge
is crafted in 3D and uses high resolution textures in order to create a level of immersion not possible
with conventional 2D gauges. “RealGauge” creates very little overhead in the sim, allowing both your
processor and graphics card to concentrate on proving a totally fluid sim experience. FPS with
RealGauge technology is often higher than with less detailed conventional 2d cockpits.

Due to the complexity of the RealGauge technology, and the guaranteed frame rate increase, this
product is designed to be completely flown from the Virtual Cockpit. A basic 2D panel is included with
GPS and NAV/COMM radio stack pop-ups.

The horizon works like any normal horizon- it rolls to represent roll and pitch. A turn and slip

The marker on the left side of the fascia shows the current collective position.

Central Display Unit (CDU)
Two linked CDUs are found on the centre console. The CDU has 5 basic modes of operation and
has been coded to perform and look like the real unit. The CDU on this release has no FMC
functionality- we cannot benefit from it with a rotary subject in Flight Simulator.

The CDU can be operated by clicking one of the 5 buttons: CAU ADV, ADV, STS, MSG and CDU.

All pages except CAU ADV have a uniform header, as shown below.

The header displays the following information:

MFD HOV page
The HOV page is a useful page to monitor when attempting a hover manoeuvre.

The display shows a heading indicator strip in the same position as the ATT page. By pressing
the middle-right soft key, the CAU-ADV panel can be toggled.

The HOV page is divided into three main parts. Heading, hover status, and wind.

Wind speed is displayed as a digital readout, with wind direction represented by the arrow. The
arrow will move 360 degrees around the speed box to match the current wind conditions.

The hover status section is dynamic and activated when the helicopter reaches 25 knots from
flight status. The crosshairs will move ‘up’ the screen towards the box from 25 knots. The
slower the helicopter, the slower the crosshairs move. When the crosshairs are in the box, the
helicopter is in a hover. Regardless of motion, the crosshairs always move down. They will
never pass the box, nor move left or right of it. As long as the helicopter has motion, the
crosshairs will move.

MFD FLIR page
Due to sim limitations, the FLIR page is inop on our model. We cannot realistically model any
form of Forward-Looking-Infra-Red systems. This is not due to our skill set; rather, the sim does
not lend itself to this sort of system simulation.
