I was born in the district of Orange Walk on January 3, 2003 to a Salvadorian mother and

Belizean father. I have lived and been raised in the same household by both parents alongside my

two sisters for all of my eighteen years of life. I was baptized by my Christian parents into the

Roman Catholic religion at the La Inmaculada Parish. I started my primary school education in

2006 at La Inmaculada Roman Catholic School and later graduated in 2015. I then joined the

Muffles College High Community in 2015 where I graduated from in 2019.

My parents have raised me to be in awe of God and to work hard and honourably. Neither of my

parents had the educational opportunities my older sister and I have and this led my mother to

make it her life’s purpose to ensure her daughters’ education since she came from a Salvadorian

family where women are denied the opportunity of education. I have inherited my father’s love

for novels and my mother’s strength and determination. I highly esteem my older sister for being

a first generation female college student and raising not only herself but all of the women in our

maternal family.

My mother has always told me that it is beautiful to reap the harvest we have sowed and that

hard work makes us value what we have earned. I have known what hard work is like since I was

fourteen years old. Having to help my mother in her part time jobs since I was a second from

student has made me value the sacrifices of my parents and appreciate my opportunity to be

educated. Hard work has motivated me to educate myself to improve my life situation and help

as many other people as I can. And as a student teacher, my education is significant to me so that

I am able to help students learn the value of education.

In 2017, I joined the Academic Science Class in third form as I was aspiring to be a veterinarian.

I was fully determined to be a S.T.E.M. student and be a veterinarian but I found it very difficult

to keep up with the demands of being a S.T.E.M. student. My home was chaotic and I did not
live in an environment that fostered my learning and I fell behind my potential. However, in the

summer of 2018, I was doing community service in a primary school classroom and fell in love

with working with students and thus, I enrolled in the Primary Education program at St. John’s

College Junior College.

Since I was about ten years old, I have always loved teaching others the knowledge that I know. I

would use chalk to write on my celotex covered walls and teach my friends the topics I was

learning in school. I take delight in being responsible for nurturing students to grow their

knowledge and skills.  The courses I have been taking as a student teacher have strengthened my

teaching skills, extended my knowledge, and expanded my appreciation for education.

“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.”
