New Zealand (C-Tick), and the following UPS product standards:
* IEC62040-1 General safety requirements for UPS
* IEC62040-2-EMC, Class C3 UPS
* IEC62040-3 Performance requirements and test methods
For details, refer to Chapter 11 Specifications.
Continued compliance requires installation in accordance with these instructions and the use of manufacturer approved
accessories only.
The standard UPS system can be connected to 3-phase 4-line (PE) TN and TT AC power distribution system (IEC60364-3).
For IT AC power distribution system use, 4-pole CB should be configured, please refer to the relative IT system standard.
Earth connection is critical before connecting the input supply (including both mains supply and battery).
This equipment must be earthed in accordance with local electrical codes.
Warning
Upstream power distribution protection device of the UPS must be selected according to local electrical codes.
Warning
If any internal fuse of the UPS is damaged, it must be replaced by professionals with a new one of the same specification.
Note
The UPS output neutral line is from the input neutral line. If the external block device blocks input neutral line, the output
neutral line will be lost, and then the system risk may be caused.
Caution
General safety
As with other types of high power equipment, dangerous voltages are present within the UPS and battery enclosure. The
risk of contact with these voltages is minimized as the live component parts are housed behind a hinged, lockable door.
Further internal safety screens make the equipment protected to IP20 standards.
No risk exists to any personnel when operating the equipment in the normal manner, following the recommended operating
procedures.
All equipment maintenance and servicing procedures involve internal access and should be carried out only by trained
personnel.
This UPS is fitted with a dry contact closure signal for use with an external automatic disconnect device (supplied by others)
to protect against backfeeding voltage into the incoming terminal through the rectifier or bypass static switch circuit. A label
must be added at the external incoming bypass supply disconnect device to warn service personnel that the circuit is
connected to a UPS. The text of the label has the following meaning: Risk of voltage backfeed! Isolate the UPS, then check
for hazardous voltage between all terminals including the protective earth before working on this circuit.
All the equipment maintenance and servicing procedures involving internal access need tools/special key and should be
carried out only by trained personnel. The components that can only be accessed by opening the protective cover with tools
cannot be maintained by the user.
This UPS system receives power from more than one source. Disconnection of all AC sources and the DC source is
required before servicing.
Note
Protect against electric shock and energy risk. The equipment inside still has hazardous conductive components powered
from battery, though AC input source is off.
The UPS is equipped with high-capacity capacitor. Though the equipment is off from mains and battery, the terminals of
these capacitors will remain dangerous voltage for a while. Before doing equipment internal maintenance, wait at least five
minutes after UPS complete disconnection, and measure the voltage between bare metal parts, then ensure that the
voltage is below the safety extral-low voltage (SELV). Failure to observe this could cause severe shock and even death.
All the battery physical maintenance and servicing procedures need special tools or keys and should be carried out only by
trained personnel.
Take special care when working with the batteries associated with this UPS. When the batteries are connected together,
the battery terminal voltage exceeds 432Vdc and is potentially lethal.
Battery manufacturers supply details of the necessary precautions to be observed in working on or in the vicinity of battery
strings. These precautions should be followed implicitly at all times. Particular attention should be paid to the
recommendations concerning local environmental conditions and the provision of protective clothing, first aid and
fire-fighting facilities.
Warning
Beside the communication board is a static sensitive area, ESD-proof action is critical before contacting with this area.

Chapter 1 Overview
This chapter briefly introduces the features, design concept and operation mode of the HIPULSE U series UPS.
1.1 Features
The UPS is connected between the 3-phase input power and the critical loads (e.g. computer) to provide high quality
three-phase power for the loads. The UPS has the following advantages:
Increase the power supply quality
The UPS protects its output against the input power change through the internal voltage and frequency controller.
Improve noise suppression
Due to the application of AC-DC-AC conversion mode, the noise in the input power is effectively filtered, and the load
gets clean power supply.
Provide mains failure protection
If the input power fails, the UPS will work in battery mode, and the power supply to the loads will NOT be interrupted.
This section describes the operating principle of a single module. The UPS basically operates as an AC-DC-AC
converter (see Figure 1-1). The first conversion stage (from AC to DC) uses a 3-phase, fully controlled SCR bridge
rectifier to convert the incoming mains supply into a regulated DC busbar.

The UPS has its own battery charger and adopts advanced temperature compensation technology to effectively
prolong the battery service life. The inverter mainly adopts large power IGBT, and adopts advanced SVPWM
technology for control, to invert the DC bus voltage back to AC voltage.
When the mains is normal, the rectifier and inverter work together to supply the loads and charge the battery.
When the mains is abnormal, the rectifier stops working, and the battery supplies power to the loads through the
inverter. If the battery voltage falls to the EOD voltage and the mains still has NOT been recovered, the UPS will shut

2 Chapter 1 Overview
down (if the system uses split bypass configuration and the bypass is normal, the system will transfer to bypass). The
battery EOD voltage is preset (330Vdc for 80kVA ~ 400kVA 400Vac system; 410Vdc for 500kVA 400Vac system).
When the mains is abnormal, the battery maintains the UPS operation till the battery voltage is reduced to EOD
voltage and the UPS shuts down, this time is called ‘Backup Time’. The length of backup time depends on the battery
capacity and the loads.
Through the intelligent control of the ‘Static Switch’ module (as shown in Figure 1-1) containing the controllable
electronic switch, the loads can be supplied by the inverter or the bypass. In normal situation, the loads are supplied
by the inverter, in which case the inverter switch at inverter side is closed. In the case of overload (the overload delay
time expires) or inverter failure, the inverter switch is opened, and the ‘Static Switch’ module will automatically
transfer the loads to the bypass.
In normal operating state, to realize the uninterrupted transfer between inverter and bypass, the inverter output must
be synchronized with the bypass.
Therefore, when the bypass frequency is within the synchronization range, the inverter control circuit will synchronize
the inverter output frequency with the bypass frequency and phase.
Besides, the UPS has a manual maintenance bypass switch for shutdown of the UPS upon maintenance. In this
situation, the bypass will directly supply the critical loads through the maintenance bypass.
Note
When the load is supplied by the bypass or maintenance bypass, the power supply quality will be uncertain.
Normal operation
During normal operation, that is, when the UPS input supply is present and within specification, both the rectifier and
inverter sections are active and the static switch is turned on to connect the inverter output to the critical load busbars.
The battery circuit breaker (BCB) is also closed and the battery is therefore permanently float charged at the DC
busbar voltage level.
(‘1+N’ parallel UPS system) Note: As the single module outputs are connected in parallel, the system checks that
the inverter control circuits are perfectly synchronized with one another and with the bypass mains in terms of both
frequency and phase and that they have the same output voltages. Current supplied to the load is automatically
divided among UPSs. A warning message appears while synchronization is in progress.
Mains abnormal
If the mains has a failure or is out of tolerance, the rectifier will go off automatically, while the inverter will continue to
operate on power from the battery for a period of time which depends on the load and the capacity of the battery. If
the mains supply has NOT returned within this time, the inverter will go off automatically and an alarm message will
appear on the operator control and display panel of the UPS.
Critical load will NOT be interrupted in the event of a drop or return of the AC power mains.
Mains recovery
When the mains resumes normal within allowable time, the rectifier will start automatically (at this time its output
power will increase gradually) and supply the load and charge the battery again. Therefore, the power supply to the
load will NOT be interrupted.
Battery disconnection
If the battery system is taken out of service for maintenance, it is disconnected from the rectifier/charger and inverters
by means of a battery switch. The UPS shall continue to function and meet all of the specified steady-state
performance criteria, except for the power outage back-up time capability.

Chapter 1 Overview 3
(‘1+N’ parallel UPS system) In the event of a fault in a unit, the unit’s static transfer switch will automatically exclude
the unit from the system. If the system is still capable of providing the required load, the remaining units will continue
to supply the load with no interruption. When the units still present in the system are no longer capable of fulfilling
power requirements, the load will automatically be transferred onto the bypass.
Overload
If the inverter is overloaded or the inverter current remains outside the specifications (refer to Table 11-6) longer than
the specified time, the load will automatically transfer to the bypass without power interruption. If both the overload
and the current are reduced to a level within the specified range, then the load will be transferred back to the inverter.
In case of output short circuit, the load will be transferred to the bypass, and the inverter will shut down.
In either case, an alarm message will appear on the operator control and display panel of the UPS.
(‘1+N’ parallel UPS system) The control logic system constantly monitors load requirements and controls the power
supplied by the UPS modules. In the event that an overload condition is sustained for greater than a preset time, the
load will transfer to the bypass mains supply, when the number of active modules is unable to satisfy load
requirements. The load returns to the inverter supply if the power is reduced to a value that can be sustained by the
number of active modules in the system.
Maintenance bypass
The UPS has a second bypass circuit, i.e. maintenance bypass, which provides a safe working environment for the
engineers to provide regular maintenance or repair to the UPS system and at the same time provide unregulated
mains supply to the loads. The maintenance bypass can be manually selected through the maintenance bypass
switch, and it can be disconnected by turning the switch to OFF.
Warning
The internal maintenance bypass must NOT be used when the UPS system is comprised of more than two UPS modules in
parallel.
Caution
If an automatic circuit breaking device is NOT present in the input distribution panel, there remains a dangerously high voltage at
the output busbars and also on the input busbars of the UPS module that is switched off.

Figure 1-2 illustrates the HIPULSE U UPS module in what is known as the split bypass configuration. In the split
bypass configuration, the static bypass line is connected by a separate power switch to a dedicated bypass power
source which also feeds the maintenance bypass line. Where a separate power source is NOT available, the bypass

(Q2) and rectifier (Q1) input supply connections would be linked together (have been linked for some standard types)
to make the bypass input and rectifier input use mains power of the same route.
Warning
When the bypass input and rectifier input use mains power of the same route, the system may be powered off due to
rectifier/bypass input short circuit.
With the exception of the maintenance bypass switch Q3, all the switches shown must be closed during normal UPS
operation.
The battery shall be connected to the UPS through the BCB. The BCB box is a standard option, which shall be
installed near the battery. The BCB is closed manually. The BCB has undervoltage tripping coil. Upon the DC bus
undervoltage, the UPS control circuit will send a signal to the coil to trip the BCB. It also has a magnetic trip facility for
overload protection.
If necessary, a single module system can be expanded to cater for an increased load requirement by adding
additional modules, up to a maximum of six UPS modules can be connected in parallel.
System expansion requires a change in the ‘Settings’ option of the operator control and display panel of each UPS
module.
Note
1. System expansion should be carried out only by Emerson trained service personnel.
2. The individual modules connected to the system must be of the same power rating.
1. The hardware and software of parallel system are completely the same as those of the single module. The parallel
system configuration is achieved through settings in configuration software or panel buttons.
2. Parallel cables are connected in a ring, providing both system reliability and redundancy. LBS cables are
connected between any two UPS modules of each bus. The intelligent parallel logic provides the user with maximum
flexibility. For example, shutting down or starting up UPS modules in a parallel system can be done in any sequence.
Transfers between normal mode and bypass mode of operation are seamless and self-recoverable, that is, the
overload is cleared, and the system will be automatically recovered to its original operation mode.
3. The total load of the parallel system can be queried from each UPS module’s LCD.
A group of paralleled modules behave as if it were one large UPS with the advantage of presenting higher reliability.
To ensure that all modules are equally utilised and to comply with relevant wiring rules, the following requirements
apply:
1. All UPS modules must be of the same rating and must be connected to the same bypass source.
2. Any RCD, if installed, must be of an appropriate setting and located upstream of the common neutral line input
terminal. Alternatively, the device must monitor the protective earth current of the system. Refer to Warning: high
earth leakage current before Contents.

3. For parallel system consists of three or more UPS modules, the bypass load sharing inductors (optional) should be
selected.
Note
The isolation transformer should be configured if the bypass has no common neutral line.
Normal mode
As shown in Figure 1-3, the UPS inverter continuously supplies the critical AC load. The rectifier/charger derives
power from the AC mains input source and supplies DC power to the inverter while simultaneously float or boost
charging its associated backup battery.

As shown in Figure 1-4, upon failure of the AC mains input power, the critical AC load is supplied by the inverter,
which obtains power from the battery. There is no interruption in power to the critical load upon failure or restoration of
the AC mains input power after which the Normal mode operation will continue without the necessity of user
intervention.

6 Chapter 1 Overview
Static switch
ECO mode
As shown in Figure 1-7, all power switches and the BCB are closed, the system prefers to put the load on the bypass
mains, with the inverter on stand-by; only when the voltage and/or frequency of the bypass supply are beyond
pre-defined and adjustable limits is the critical AC load transferred to the inverter.
If ECO mode is required, adjust the corresponding parameters through the operator control and display panel.
The operation method of ECO mode is the same as the description in Chapter 5 Operating Instructions. However, in
normal mode, the load is powered by the bypass, the inverter indicator is flashing, and the LCD displays ‘Bypass
mode’.

PFC mode
This PFC mode, which should be set through the setting software by Emerson service personnel, can improve the
input power factor of the system.
Note: This function is available only when you select PFC options.
The UPS provides battery maintenance test function. At periodic intervals, 20% of the rated capacity of the battery will
be discharged automatically, and the actual three-phase load must exceed 15% of the nominal UPS capacity. If the
load is less than 15%, the automatic discharge cannot be executed. The periodic interval can be set from 30 to 180
days. The battery maintenance test function can be disabled through the Emerson setting software.
Conditions: Battery at float charge for at least 5h, load larger than 15%.
Trigger: Automatically, or manually through the command of battery maintenance test in LCD.
Interval: 30 ~ 180 days (default setting: 60 days).
The battery connects to the UPS through the BCB box. The BCB is manually closed and tripped by the UPS control
circuit. The BCB open alarm occurs when the BCB opens.

8 Chapter 2 Mechanical Installation
This chapter briefly introduces the mechanical installation of the HIPULSE U series UPS, including the notes,
environmental considerations, mechanical considerations, preliminary checks and installation drawings.
2.1 Notes
This chapter describes the environmental and mechanical requirements and mechanical considerations that must be
taken into account when planning the positioning and cabling of the UPS equipment.
Because each site has its particular characteristics, this chapter does NOT provide the detailed installation steps, it
only acts as a guide for the general procedures and practices that should be observed by the installing engineer, so
that they can properly handle the specific situation of the site.
Warning
Before the authorized engineer powers on and comissions the UPS, do NOT remove the dust cover on the top of the UPS, so as
to prevent dust accumulation in the UPS in installation from causing system fault or personnel injury.
Warning
1. The UPS system can connect to the power system (i.e., IT system) whose neutral point is NOT earthed.
2. The UPS can be connected to TN and TT AC distribution systems (IEC60364-3) of 3-phase 5-wire (A, B, C, N, PE).
Take special care when installing batteries. When connecting batteries, the battery terminal voltage will reach 320Vdc, which is
fatal to human being.
1. Please wear safety glasses to protect the eyes from being damaged by arc.
2. Remove all the metal items, including finger rings, watch, etc.
3. Use tools with insulated handle.
4. Wear insulating gloves and arc preventive coveralls.
5. If the battery has electrolyte leakage or the battery is damaged, it must be replaced. Place the battery into the container that
can withstand sulfuric acid and dispose of it according to the local regulations.
6. If the skin contacts the electrolyte, flush it with water immediately.
7. Do NOT place the tools and metal components on top of the battery.
8. Disconnect charging power supply before connecting cables.
9. Check if the battery is earthed accidently, if so, solve it. Electric shock may occur if you contact with any part of the earthed
battery. In installing and maintaining battery, earthed battery protection can effectively reduce the possibility of electric shock risk.
2.2 Transportation
Railroad transportation and shipping are the recommended means of transportation. If truck transportation is
unavoidable, choose roads that are less bumpy in order to protect the equipment.
The UPS cabinet is heavy (see Table 11-3 for the weight). It is recommended to use mechanical equipment such as
an electric forklift to unload and move the equipment to the place closest to the installation site. If an electric forklift is
used, insert the tines of the forklift below the bottom pallet (as shown in Figure 2-1) to prevent the equipment from
falling over.

2.3 Unpacking
Unpack the UPS and battery packages under the guidance of authorized service engineer. Steps:
1. Remove the side panels and top cover.
Use a hammer or straight screwdriver to straighten the connection hook that connects the side panels to the top
cover, as shown in Figure 2-2.
At first, straighten all the hooks that fix side panel I, and remove side panel I. Then straighten all the hooks that fix
side panel II, and remove side panel II. At last remove top cover III, as shown in Figure 2-3.

Chapter 2 Mechanical Installation 11
The UPS should be located in a cool, dry, clean-air indoor environment with adequate ventilation, and should be
located on concrete or other nonflammable and flat surfaces. The ambient environment should be free of conductive
powder (such as metallic powder, sulfide, sulfur dioxide, graphite, carbon fiber, conductive fiber, etc.), acid mist or
other conductive media (strongly ionized substances). The environment specifications should comply with relevant
international standard & specifications and the operating range (see Table 11-2) specified in this manual.
All models in the UPS range are cooled with the aid of internal fans. Cooling air enters the module through ventilation
grills located at various parts of the cabinet and exhausted through grills located in the cabinet roof, which is
applicable for installation on concrete or other nonflammable surface. Because the UPS is heavy, you must take site
bearing capacity (see Table 11-3 for equipment weight) into consideration when selecting the installation site. When
the cabinet is located on a raised floor, and bottom cable entry is used, additional cooling air also enters the UPS
through the floor void. If necessary, a system of extractor fans should be installed to aid cooling-air flow, and a
suitable air filtration system used where the UPS is to operate in a dirty environment.
Note 1: When the battery cabinet is installed near the UPS, the maximum allowable ambient temperature is
dependent on the battery rather than the UPS.
Note 2: If the UPS is working in ECO mode, the power consumption will be less than that in normal mode.
Proper air conditioning system shall be selected according to the normal mode.
Temperature is a major factor in determining the battery life and capacity. Battery manufacturers quote figures for an
operating temperature of 20°C. Operating above this temperature will reduce the battery life, and operation below this
temperature will reduce the battery capacity. On a normal installation the battery temperature is maintained between
15°C and 25°C. Batteries should be mounted in an environment where the temperature is consistent and even over
the whole battery. Keep batteries away from main heat sources or main air inlets, and so on.
Battery can be installed inside the specialized battery cabinet which shall be close to the UPS. If the battery is placed
on the raised floor, bracket shall be installed under the floor, just as for the UPS. If the battery adopts rack mounting
or is mounted far from the UPS with other installation mode, the battery circuit breaker shall be installed near the
battery, and the cabling distance shall be minimized.
2.5.3 Storage
Should the UPS NOT be installed immediately, it must be stored with the original packaging in a room for protection
against excessive humidity and heat sources (see Table 11-2). The battery needs to be stored in a dry and cool place
with good ventilation. The most suitable storage temperature ranges from 20°C to 25°C.
Warning
During battery storage, periodically charge the battery according to the battery manufacturer instructions.
HIPULSE U UPS Single Module And ‘1+N’ (Expandable) 80kVA~500kVA User Manual
12 Chapter 2 Mechanical Installation
A UPS system can comprise a number of equipment cabinets, depending on the individual system design
requirements, for example, UPS cabinet, battery cabinet. The 120kVA UPS (12-pulse rectifier), 200kVA UPS
(12-pulse rectifier), 300kVA UPS (12-pulse rectifier), 400kVA UPS (6-pulse rectifier) 400kVA UPS (12-pulse rectifier)
and 500kVA UPS (12-pulse rectifier) system comprise two cabinets. In general, all the cabinets used in a particular
installation are of the same height and designed to be positioned side-by-side to form an aesthetically appealing
equipment suit.
Warning
1. Ensure that any lifting equipment that used in moving the UPS cabinet has sufficient lifting capacity. The cabinet needs vertical
move with tilt degree NOT more than 10.
2. Vertical hanging of cabinet is NOT allowed.
3. Do NOT move the battery cabinet fitted with batteries.
Ensure that the UPS weight is within the designated surface weight loading of any handling equipment. See
Table 11-3 for UPS weight details.
The UPS cabinet can be moved by fork lift. Before moving the UPS cabinet, it is necessary to remove both the front,
rear (or side) grille panels located at the base of the cabinet.
In the eventuality that the equipment cannot be moved by fork lift, then rollers should be used.
2.6.3 Clearances
As HIPULSE U UPS has no ventilation grills at either the sides or the rear, no clearances are required. However,
where space permits, a clearance of approximately 600mm at the back will ease access to magnetic component parts.
Clearance around the front of the equipment should be sufficient to enable free passage of personnel with the doors
fully opened.

Chapter 2 Mechanical Installation 13
Before the equipment is in place, be sure to remove the transportation restraints that hold the output transformer in
place. For procedures, refer to Appendix 1 Transportation Restraints Removing Procedures.
The HIPULSE U 500kVA UPS uses top and bottom cable entry method, and the HIPULSE U 80 ~ 400kVA UPS uses
bottom cable entry method, an optional top cable entry extension should be used in top cable entry.
After final positioning, fix the UPS directly on the installation surface through the anchor holes on the UPS base. If the
UPS is mounted on raised floor, a suitable pedestal should be designed, which should be able to bear the UPS
weight.
Important
Fixing the UPS to the installation surface through the anchor holes on the UPS base is mandatory.
This section details the mechanical connection of parallel cabinets. The guidance is only applicable to the UPS
containing several cabinets and parallel connected on site.

Chapter 3 Electrical Installation 33
This chapter introduces the electrical installation of the HIPULSE U UPS, including the procedures or methods for
power cabling and control cabling, the distance from floor to connection point, and the connection of cabinets.
The UPS requires both power cabling and control cabling once it has been mechanically installed. All control cables,
whether shielded or not, should be run separate from the power cables in metal conduits or metal ducts which are
electrically bonded to the metalwork of the cabinets to which they are connected.
Warning
1. Do NOT power on the UPS before the arrival of authorized service engineer.
2. The UPS cables must be routed by an authorized engineer in accordance with the information contained in this chapter.
Warning
1. Before cabling the UPS, ensure that you are aware of the location and operation of the switches that connect the UPS
input/bypass supply to the mains distribution panel.
2. Check that these switches are disconnected, and post any necessary warning signs to prevent their inadvertent operation.
The cable size of the system power cable shall meet the following requirements:
Battery cables
Each UPS connects to its battery through two cables connecting to the positive pole and negative pole. The cable
size of the battery cable differs with the UPS power ratings, provided that it meets the battery discharge current
requirement when the battery discharges to near EOD voltage, see Table 3-1.
The power cable must be selected according to the current and voltage values in Table 3-1 as well as the local wiring
regulations, and take environmental conditions (temperature and physical media) into consideration, then refer to
Table 3B in IEC 60950-1.

3.1.4 Distance Between The UPS Connection Point And The Floor
3.1.5 Notes
The following are guidelines only and superseded by local regulations and codes of practice where applicable:
1. The neutral conductor should be selected according to local regulations.
HIPULSE U UPS Single Module And ‘1+N’ (Expandable) 80kVA~500kVA User Manual
Chapter 3 Electrical Installation 35
2. The earth conductor should be selected according to local regulations (this is dependent on the fault rating, cable
lengths, type of protection etc.).
3. For battery cable selection, follow the current value in Table 3-1, at most 3Vdc voltage drop is allowed. The load
equipment is usually connected to distribution network with independent bus protection, NOT directly connected to
the UPS. To avoid affect load-sharing, in the parallel system, ensure that output terminal of each single and cable
output length of each single of distribution busbar is consistent. To avoid increase the formation of electromagnetic
interference, do NOT round cables.
4. Consideration should be given to the use of paralleled smaller cables for heavy currents, as this can ease
installation considerably.
5. In most installations, especially those concerning parallel multi-module systems, the load equipment is connected
to a distribution network of individually protected busbars fed by the UPS output rather than being connected directly
to the UPS itself. Where this is the case the UPS output cables can be rated to suit the individual distribution network
demands rather than being fully load-rated.
The rectifier input, bypass, output and battery power cables (all require lug type terminations) are connected to
busbars situated below the power isolator switches, as shown in Figure 3-2 to Figure 3-9.
The safety earth busbar is located near the input and output power supply connections, as shown in Figure 3-2 to
Figure 3-9. The safety earth cable must be connected to the earth busbar and bonded to each cabinet in the system.
All cabinets and cable troughs should be earthed in accordance with local regulations. The earth cable should be
bound with binding strips onto the metallic column for cabling so as to prevent the fixing screw of the earth cable from
loosening in the case the earth cable is pulled.
Warning
Failure to follow adequate earthing procedures can result in electric shock hazard to personnel, or the risk of fire, should an earth
fault occur.
To ensure the safety, it is necessary to install external circuit breaker for the input and battery of the UPS. Because of
the difference of the specific installations, this section only provides general practical information for the installation
engineer. The qualified installation engineer should have the knowledge of the local wiring regulations on the
equipment to be installed.

36 Chapter 3 Electrical Installation
2. Split bypass: rectifier and bypass in the cabinet have no electrical connection.
If the UPS adopts split bypass configuration, independent protective device shall be installed respectively on the
rectifier input and bypass input distribution lines.
Note
1. The UPS output neutral line is from the input neutral line. If the external block device blocks input neutral line, the output
neutral line will be lost, and then the system risk may be caused.
2. For IT grid system, 4-pole protective device must be installed at the UPS external power distribution.
These isolators must have an average sensitivity, possible adjustable between 0.3A and 1A.
It is recommended that the selectivity with every RCD be verified both upstream of the input distribution board and
downstream (to the load).
External battery
The BCB must be installed for protecting the external battery. The UPS provides an optional BCB box to provide
overcurrent protection, short circuit protection and automatic tripping functions for the external battery.
The circuit breaker is essential for maintenance of the battery and is normally located near to the battery installation.
System output
The UPS output distribution shall be configured with a protective device. The protective device shall be different from
the input distribution protection switch and able to provide overload protection (refer to Table 11-6 and Table 11-7).
Once the equipment has been finally positioned and secured, refer to Figure 3-2 to Figure 3-9 to connect the power
cables as described in the following procedures.
Warning
Before cables connection, make sure that all external and internal power switches of the UPS are off, and post necessary warning
signs to prevent inadvertent operation of the switches. Meanwhile, measure the voltages between the UPS terminals and the
voltages between the terminals and the earth.
Note
1. The power cables should be routed through tunnels or cable troughs to prevent cable damage due to mechanical stress, and
then reduce the EMI .
2. When routing the cables inside the cabinets, it is required to bind and fix the cables as instructed in Figure 3-2 and Figure 3-9 in
the cabinets, so as to prevent cable damage due to mechanical stress.

Chapter 3 Electrical Installation 37
1. Open the UPS front door and remove the lower protective cover to gain access to the connections copper bars.
Note: The shorting copper bar of the 400kVA UPS (6-pulse) and common input cables of 500kVA UPS are
optional parts.
2. Connect the safety earth and any necessary bonding earth cables to the copper earth busbar located on the floor
of the equipment below the power connections.
Note 1: The earthing and neutral bonding arrangement must be in accordance with local and national codes
practice.
Note 2: HIPULSE U 80kVA/100kVA/120kVA/200kVA UPS is delivered with an accessory magnetic ring for EMI
suppression. When connecting the power cables, route the power cables through the magnetic ring. See the
following for details.
3. Common input connections.
For common bypass and rectifier inputs (optional shorting copper bars between rectifier input and bypass input is
needed for 400kVA UPS (6-pulse), common input options are needed for 500kVA UPS (12-pulse)), connect the AC
input supply cables between the mains distribution panel and the UPS input supply busbar U1-V1-W1-N1 terminals
(160kVA UPS) or U1-V1-W1-N2 terminals (80kVA/100kVA/120kVA/200kVA/300kVA/400kVA/500kVA UPS). Tighten
the connections to 13Nm (M8 bolt), 26Nm (M10 bolts) and 50Nm (M12 bolts). ENSURE CORRECT PHASE
ROTATION.
For 80kVA/100kVA/120kVA/200kVA UPS, when connecting the cables between the rectifier input U1-V1-W1 terminals
and bypass N2 terminal, lead the cables through the accessory magnetic ring.
4. Split bypass connections.
If a split bypass configuration is used for 160kVA UPS, connect the AC input supply cables to the input busbar
U1-V1-W1-N1 terminals, and the bypass AC supply cables to the bypass busbars (U2-V2-W2-N2 terminals), and then
tighten the connections to 13Nm (M8 bolt). ENSURE CORRECT PHASE ROTATION.
If a split bypass configuration is used for 80kVA/100kVA/120kVA/200kVA/300kVA/400kVA/500kVA UPS, connect the
AC input supply cables to the input busbar U1-V1-W1-N1 terminals, and the bypass AC supply cables to the bypass
busbars (U2-V2-W2-N2 terminals), and then tighten the connections to 13Nm (M8 bolt), to 26Nm (M10 bolt), and to
50Nm (M12 bolt). ENSURE CORRECT PHASE ROTATION.
For 80kVA/100kVA/120kVA/200kVA UPS, when connecting the cables to the rectifier input U1-V1-W1 terminals, lead
the cables through the accessory magnetic ring.
Warning
1. For 160kVA/200kVA/300kVA UPS and the 400kVA UPS (12-pulse), ensure that any links (*) fitted between rectifier input and
bypass busbars are removed. But do NOT remove those between the neutral terminals. See Figure 3-5 to Figure 3-7.
2. For 80kVA/100kVA/120kVA UPS, change the connection of the cables (*) between the connection copper bar of the bypass
switch Q2 and the rectifier input terminals (U1-V1-W1), connect these cables to the bypass input terminals (U2-V2-W2), as
shown in Figure 3-2 to Figure 3-4. ENSURE CORRECT PHASE ROTATION.
Warning
If the load equipment will NOT be ready to accept power on the arrival of the commissioning engineer then ensure that the
system output cables are safely isolated at their ends.
6. Battery connections.
Connect the battery cables between the UPS terminals (+/-) and its associated BCB. Connect screened auxiliary
cables from each BCB control board to the auxiliary terminal block (X3). OBSERVE THE BATTERY CABLE

Chapter 4 Operator Control And Display Panel 61
The UPS provides an emergency power off (EPO) button on the operator control and display panel, as shown in
Figure 4-1. The EPO button is housed beneath a safety cover to prevent inadvertent operation. After the EPO button
has been pressed and hold for 2 seconds, it disables the static switch block entirely (so removing load power). It also
disables the rectifier and inverter, and trips the battery circuit breaker. Under normal circumstances it does not
remove UPS input power since this is applied through a manually controlled input load isolator; however, if the UPS
input supply is connected through circuit breaker having an electrical trip facility, the EPO switch can be used to drive
the external circuit breaker’s trip circuit so as to remove the UPS input power.
Upon UPS start, the UPS executes system test, and the start screen will appear and remains approximately 15
seconds, as shown in Figure 4-3.
After the UPS starts and finishes system test, the primary screen will appear, as shown in Figure 4-4. For details
about the primary screen, refer to 4.3 Detailed Description Of Menu Items.

During UPS operation, if there is neither an alarm nor a keypad operation within two minutes, the default screen will
appear, as shown in Figure 4-5. Two minutes later, the LCD backlight will turn off. When an alarm occurs or a key is
pressed, the primary screen will return, and the LCD backlight will turn on.
The LCD will also return to the primary screen when pressing any menu key at the default screen.

This chapter provides detailed operating notes and instructions of the HIPULSE U series UPS.
5.1 Introduction
5.1.1 Notes
Important
Special attention: Before system poweron, the authorized engineer must remove the dust cover on the top of the UPS.
Important
Only after an authorized engineer has conducted the initial power-on and finished the UPS configuration is the user allowed to
operate the UPS.
Warning
1. No user accessable parts are located behind covers that require a tool for their removal. Only qualified service personnel are
authorised to remove such covers.
2. Hazardous voltages are always present at the UPS input and output terminals. If the UPS is fitted with an internal Class A
filter, the filter carries hazardous voltages too.
1. All the user controls and indicators (LED) mentioned in these procedures are identified in Chapter 4 Operator
Control And Display Panel.
2. The audible alarm may annunciate at various points in these procedures. It can be canceled at any time by
pressing the SILENCE ON/OFF button.
3. When UPS uses traditional lead-acid battery, the system provides boost charge optional function. If the lead-acid
battery is used, when the mains returns after an extended mains failure, the charging voltage of the battery will be
higher than the normal charging voltage, this is normal, and the charging voltage of the battery will return to normal
value after a few hours’ charging.
The UPS can be separated by means of power switches, mounted inside the cabinet and accessible after opening
the front door, which has a key. The location of the UPS power switches is shown in Figure 5-1 to Figure 5-8.
The UPS module power switches are:
Q1 — input switch: Connects the UPS with the mains supply.
Q2 — bypass switch: Connects the UPS with the bypass supply.
Q3 — maintenance bypass switch (locked): Permits supply of the load directly by the bypass line for maintenance of
the UPS module.
The internal maintenance bypass must not be used when the UPS system is comprised of more than two UPS
modules in parallel.
Q5 — output switch: Connects the output of the UPS to the load.
BCB — battery switch: Control the connection of the battery. BCB can be closed only when the rectifier starts.
Note: The battery circuit breaker (BCB) is not expected inside of the UPS and should be installed in the
proximity of the respective battery.

Chapter 6 Battery
This chapter introduces the battery, including the battery safety points, installation, maintenance, and the battery
protection function, as well as the connections of the optional battery circuit breaker (BCB) box and battery
temperature sensor.
6.1 Introduction
The UPS battery consists of battery blocks connected in series to provide a nominal DC input voltage for the UPS
inverter. The required autonomy time (the time that the battery can maintain supply to the load in the event of a mains
failure) is limited by the ampere-hour size of the individual battery blocks and in some cases this could mean several
strings are connected in parallel.
It must be possible to disconnect the battery from the UPS module when undertaking maintenance or service
procedures. This is facilitated by means of a suitably rated circuit breaker which must be located as close as possible
to the battery terminals, and the power and control cables connected to the UPS using the most direct route possible.
If multiple sets of batteries connected in parallel are used to increase battery autonomy, the extension must be fitted
with a sectioning device to permit work to be performed on one set of batteries while the others remain in service.
For external battery assembly, Emerson offers an optional battery circuit breaker (BCB) box, the features of which
depend on the size of the UPS. Normally, you must select a corresponding BCB box for each UPS, in order to
disconnect the battery from the UPS when the UPS requires maintenance or repair. The BCB box includes a BCB
control board. This box is designed to be either wall-mounted or assembled on a frame, and is connected between
the UPS and the battery. Refer to 6.9 BCB Box (Optional) for more information.
6.2 Safety
Take special care when operating the UPS battery. When all the cells are connected, the voltage of the battery string
may exceed 432Vdc, which is fatal to human being. Ensure the compliance with the high-voltage operation
precautions. Only qualified personnel are allowed to install and maintain the battery. To ensure the safety, the
batteries shall be installed inside the locked cabinet or specially designed battery room, so that they are kept away
from human being (except for the qualified maintenance engineer).
Warning
1. The battery shall be firmly and reliably connected. After the connection is completed, the screw connections between all the
terminals and the batteries shall be calibrated. The requirements on torque specified in the specifications or user manual
provided by the battery manufacturer shall be satisfied. The connections between all the wiring terminals and the batteries shall
be inspected and tightened at least once a year. Otherwise it may cause fire!
Too large or too small torque may cause poor connection of the terminal. Under
Tighten the terminal bolt of the battery with
certain conditions, the terminal may have arcing or heat accumulation, which
specified torque
finally will cause fire

Warning
2. The battery appearance must be inspected before accepting and using the battery. If there exists any package damage, dirty
battery terminal, terminal erosion, rust, or enclosure crack, deformation or liquid leakage, replace it with a new battery.
Otherwise, battery capacity reduction, electric leakage or fire may be caused

Note
Full safety instructions concerning the use and maintenance of UPS batteries are provided in the appropriate battery
manufacturers manuals. The battery safety information contained in this section relates to key considerations which must be taken
into account during the installation design process and might affect the design outcome depending on localized conditions.

Chapter 6 Battery 85
Temperature
The higher the temperature is, the shorter the battery service life will be. At low temperature, the charge/discharge
performance of the battery will be significantly reduced.
The battery must be installed in cool and dry environment with the humidity less than 90%, and be protected from the
heat source and direct sunshine.
The ambient temperature, ventilation, space, float/equalizing charge voltage and ripple current will affect the battery
temperature. Uneven temperature among the battery strings will cause uneven voltage distribution and thus result in
problem. Therefore, it is very important to maintain balanced temperature in the battery string, and the temperature
difference between batteries of different layers shall be kept within 3°C. Valve-regulated battery is very sensitive to
the temperature, therefore, valve-regulated battery shall be used in 15°C ~ 25°C. If the battery cabinet is installed
near the UPS, the maximum design ambient temperature shall be determined according to the battery rather than the
UPS. That is, if valve-regulated battery is used, the indoor ambient temperature shall be 15°C ~ 25°C rather than the
operating temperature range of the main equipment. Under the precondition that the average temperature will not
exceed 25°C, it is allowed to have short time temperature deviation.
The nominal DC bus voltage, and therefore battery float voltage, is set according the module’s rated input and output
voltages. For 80 ~ 400kVA UPS, usually set to 432Vdc (380Vac), 446Vdc (400Vac) or 459V (415Vac); for 500kVA
UPS, usually set to 540Vdc (380Vac), 553Vdc (400Vac) or 567Vdc (415Vac). Given that the desired cell float voltage
is 2.25V, this means that a different number of cells are required in each case (see Table 6-2, Table 6-3).

Important
The battery is connected to the UPS through a BCB, which is manually closed and electronically tripped through the
UPS control circuitry. If the cells are rack-mounted (or located remote from the main UPS cabinet), the BCB must be
mounted as near as possible to the batteries themselves, and the power and control cables connected to the UPS
using the most direct route possible.
Features of the BCB include:
Isolation from battery to achieve safety and reliability

1. Before installation, check the battery appearance to ensure that there is no damage, inspect and count the
accessories, and carefully read this manual and the user manual or installation instruction provided by the battery
manufacturer.
2. There shall be at least 10mm gap between the batteries in vertical direction, to ensure the free circulation of the
ambient air of the batteries.
3. Certain clearance shall be maintained between the battery top and the upper layer to facilitate the monitoring and
maintenance of the battery.
4. The batteries shall be installed from the bottom layer and from bottom to top, so as to avoid a too high gravity
center. The battery shall be properly installed and protected from vibration or shock.
1. All the battery cabinets or battery racks must be connected together and properly grounded.
2. When multiple batteries are used, they shall be connected in series and then in parallel. Before loading and
power-up, it must be detected that the total voltage of the batteries is as specified. The negative and positive poles of
the batteries must be connected to the negative and positive battery terminals of the UPS according to the labels on
the battery and UPS. If the battery is reversely connected, explosion and fire may be caused, it may result in battery
and UPS damage or even human injury.
3. When the battery cable connection is completed, install insulating shield for the terminals.
4. When connecting the cable between the battery terminal and the BCB, the BCB terminal shall be connected first.
5. The bending radius of the cable shall be larger than 10D, wherein D is the outer diameter of the cable.
6. When the battery cable is connected, it is prohibited to pull the battery cable or the cable terminal.
7. Do not cross the battery cables during the connection, and do not tie the battery cables together.

92 Chapter 7 Parallel System And Dual Bus System
This chapter introduces the installation procedures, operating instructions of the ‘1+N’ system, and the installation of
the dual bus system, of the HIPULSE U series UPS.
7.1 General
The system can comprise of up to six UPS modules of the same power rating and connected in parallel without the
need for a centralized mains static bypass. Instead the bypass static switches of each UPS share the load when the
system transfers to the mains bypass supply.
From a ‘power’ viewpoint, each module is internally identical to the ‘single module’ configuration. A ‘1+N’ system
requires inter-module control signals to manage the load sharing, synchronizing and bypass switching. The control
signals are connected through the parallel cables, which are multi-way ribbon cables connected between the units of
the system to form a ring.
When three or more modules are to be connected in parallel it is recommended that inductance should be inserted in
the static bypass line. This can be installed internal to the UPS as an option.
Be sure that a parallel kit is present and fitted in each of the modules, and that the modules are of the same rating
and with the same software and hardware release.
Warning
To achieve coordinated operation of the modules in the parallel system, it is required to configure each module separately using
background configuration software. This must be done by Emerson service & support trained personnel.

Parallel cable
Shielded and double insulated control cables available in length up to 20m must be must be interconnected in a ring
configuration between UPS modules as shown in Figure 7-2. Specifically, connect the two parallel cables from X1-1
and X2-2 on the parallel board of the first module respectively to X1-2 and X2-1 on the parallel board of the second
module, and so on.
The parallel board is mounted on the inner door of each UPS module. The ring configuration ensures high reliability
of the control.

Refer to the EPO input port (X2) part in 3.2.1 Monitoring Board Ports.
EXT-Maint (X3-1 & 2) on UPS parallel board M3 (leave open if no external bypass switch is used) provides external
maintenance bypass interlock protection for the UPS. Short circuit means external bypass closed.
EXT-Out (X3-3 & 4) on UPS parallel board M3 (leave shorted if no external output switch is used) provides external
output interlock protection for paralleled UPS modules. Short circuit means external output switch closed.
Note
1. UPS parallel board M3 is located behind protective covers accessible aftr opening the UPS front door — removal of this barrier
requires the use of a tool and is restricted to service personnel.
2. Jumper JP1 (located next to X3) needs to be removed for X3: 3 & 4 to work properly.
Warning
If residual current detectors (RCDs) are used on UPS unit inputs, use a common device only on the system’s bypass mains. At
the instant of electrical connection, the current may not be split instantaneously and this may cause the residual current circuit
breakers (RCCBs) to trip separately.
These operations must be performed one at a time, progressing to the next step only after having completed the
previous step on both UPS modules.

Chapter 7 Parallel System And Dual Bus System 95
This procedure must be followed when turning on the UPS from a fully powered down condition, that is, where the
load is not being initially supplied at all or where supplied by the maintenance bypass switch. It is assumed that the
installation is complete, the system has been commissioned by authorized personnel and the external power isolators
are closed.
Warning
1. These procedures result in mains voltage being applied to the UPS output terminals.
2. If any load equipment is connected to the UPS output terminals, check with the user that it is safe to apply power. If the load is
not ready to receive power, disconnect the downstream load switch, and stick a warning label on the connection point of the load.
Warning
The internal maintenance bypass must not be used when the UPS system is comprised of more than two UPS modules in
parallel.
7.3.3 Isolation Procedure (Of One UPS Module From Parallel System)
Important
These procedures shall only be carried out by service personnel of Emerson or under their guidance.
Warning
Before operation, confirm that the system capacity has redundancy to avoid system shutdown due to overload.
1. Open the UPS output switch Q5, input switch Q1, and bypass switch Q2 in turn.
2. Open the BCB inside the battery cabinet.
To completely isolate the UPS, open the AC power supply circuit breaker (both circuit breakers if separate supplies
are provided for the rectifier and the bypass supply) and the output circuit breaker on the power distribution
switchboard.
If individual UPS output isolation circuit breaker (and its auxiliary contacts) are not installed on the power distribution
switchboard, remember that voltage supplied by the others UPS which remains in service will still be present on the
output terminals of the shutdown UPS.
Warning
1. If individual UPS output isolation circuit breaker are not installed on the power distribution switchboard, remember that voltage
supplied by the others UPS which remains in service will still be present on the output terminals of the shutdown UPS.
2. Wait five minutes for the internal DC bus bar capacitors to discharge.
Important
These procedures shall only be carried out by service personnel of Emerson or under their guidance.
This procedure is indicated to re-integrate a UPS module that has been previously isolated from other modules of a
group of paralleled UPS modules. It is assumed that the installation is complete, the system has been commissioned
by authorized personnel and the external power isolators are closed.

96 Chapter 7 Parallel System And Dual Bus System
For details, refer to 5.6 Shutdown Procedure (Complete UPS And Load Shutdown).
The battery terminals still have hazardous voltage after the UPS complete shutdown.
As shown in Figure 7-3, the dual bus system consists of two independent UPS configurations each consisting of one
or more UPS modules. Dual bus systems are high availability configurations suitable for loads with multiple input
terminals. For single input loads an optional static transfer switch (STS) may be added.
The objective of the dual bus system is to keep the output of two independent UPS systems (or parallel systems) in
synchronization using optional load bus synchronization (LBS) cable. One system is designated as the master; the
other is designated as the slave. The operating modes covered comprise master and or slave operating inverter or
bypass mode.
In installation, place the UPS modules side by side and interconnect as described in the following sections.

112 Chapter 8 Options
The features of the BCB box depend on the size of the UPS. Generally, you must select a corresponding BCB box for
each UPS, in order to disconnect the battery from the UPS when the UPS requires maintenance or repair.
This BCB box is to protect the battery against overdischarge and overcurrent, and also isolates the UPS and battery,
thus minimizing the risk of UPS maintenance.
See Table 6-4 for parameters of the BCB box.
The battery temperature sensor (model: TMP12Z) is used to detect the battery temperature (4-route temperature
signal). It is placed near the battery where it can detect the battery temperature. Connect one end of the battery
temperature sensor to the battery, and the other end to the BCB control box, then the signal will be reported into the
UPS via this control box. For details, refer to 6.9 BCB Box (Optional).
With this function, we can adjust the float charging voltage of the battery to prevent the over-charge of the battery
under high ambient temperature.
The UPS provides an optional battery ground fault detector, which detects and then removes the fault to ensure the
reliable system operation. The monitored leakage current range is larger than 1A. If a fault is detected, the LCD will
display the corresponding alarm.
The battery ground fault detector contains a current transformer (CT) and a control board (HIU 0500kTK16CN01C2).

122 Chapter 10 Service & Maintenance
Regular service and maintenance are required during the long term operation of the UPS system (including the
associated battery). The battery maintenance is expounded in Chapter 6. This chapter deals with the life
characteristics of the key components of the UPS, and provides recommendation for the regular check and service of
the key components. Proper service and maintenance of the UPS system can extend the UPS life and reduce the risk
of system malfunction.
10.1 Safety
Warning
1. Daily inspection of UPS systems shall be executed by people who have received relevant training, and the inspection and
replacement of devices should be operated by authorized professionals.
2. The components that can only be accessed by opening the protective cover with tools cannot be operated by the user. Only
qualified service personnel are authorized to remove such covers.
3. Note that the neutral line has hazardous voltage when servicing the UPS.
The design life of the magnetic components is 20 years. The key factors affecting the life of the magnetic components
are the interwinding isolation system and the temperature increase in operation. The HIPULSE U series UPS adopts
H-level isolation system and can withstand up to 220°C working temperature. Normally, the UPS works in forced air
cooling condition.
The power semiconductor devices include SCR (silicon-controlled rectifier) and IGBT (insulated gate bipolar
transistor). In normal UPS working condition, there is no rated life of the power semiconductor devices. The SCR and
IGBT failures are always caused by other problems, as they do not have the problem of life expiration. However, in
system service and maintenance, you should check on an annual basis the appearances of the power semiconductor
devices for erosion and damage. If you spot any risk of failure, replace the device.
The life of the electrolytic capacitors depends on the DC bus voltage and ambient temperature of the UPS.
To ensure safe and stable UPS operation, it is recommended to check the operation status of the electrolytic
capacitors on an annual basis. The electrolytic capacitors must be replaced before their life expires, advisably, within
5 to 6 years of operation.
10.2.4 AC Capacitors
It is recommended to replace the AC capacitors within 5 to 6 years of continuous operation, and to check the AC
capacitors on a half year basis. Replace the AC capacitor if spotting any deformation.

Chapter 10 Service & Maintenance 123
The key components listed in Table 10-1 are used in the UPS. To prevent system malfunction caused by failure of key
components due to wear and tear during working, you are recommended to check them regularly, and replace them
within their life expectancy.
