Dear Akron City Council:
encourage you to support the Resolution supporting H.R. 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of
2021, by urging its passage in the US. Senate
Reforming our justice system begins with holding law enforcement accountable to the communities that they
are swom to protect. That is what the Justice in Policing Act takes important steps to do. The Congressional
Black Caucus led the development of this legislation, and we introduced it last year, to put action behind the
calls for reform, We reintroduced the legislation this year to take meaningful steps to end unchecked
misconduct and hold police officers and departments accountable. This bill would demilitarize police
departments, create a national police misconduct registry, ban choke holds, and eliminate the use of no-knock
warrants in drug cases. Additionally, this bill would reform the qualified immunity statute, eliminating major
barriers for people looking to recover damages from police who have infringed on their constitutional rights
People all around our state and our country are calling for meaningful change in our justice system, and itis up
to us to show them that we are listening, and we are taking action. We must lea from this moment, listen to
the voices that have been silenced and ignored for too long, and take action to end systemic racism and build a
more just country that works for everyone.
‘Thank you for your attention to this important issue
Sincerely,
Soyo our)
