WHAT IS
COVID-19?
It is an infectious disease caused by
the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2
SARS = severe acute respiratory
distress syndrome
It is predominantly a respiratory illness that can affect other organs.
People with COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms,
ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may
appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus
HISTORY OF COVID-19
The outbreak of coronavirus
disease (COVID-19)was first
reported from Wuhan, China, on
31 December 2019.
It was originally named Novel
Coronavirus
January 30, 2020 - was the first

Philippines.
On Jan. 31, 2020, the World Health

TRANSMISSIONS OF
COVID-19
COVID-19 spreads very easily from person to person

COVID-19 most commonly spreads during close

contact
People who are physically near (within 6 feet) a person with COVID-
19 or have direct contact with that person are at greatest risk of
infection. When people with COVID-19 cough, sneeze, sing, talk, or
breathe they produce respiratory droplets.
COVID-19 can sometimes be spread by airborne transmission.
Some infections can be spread by exposure to virus in small droplets and
particles that can linger in the air for minutes to hours. There is evidence
that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected
others who were more than 6 feet away. These transmissions occurred
within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation.
COVID-19 spreads less commonly through contact with contaminated surfaces
It appears that the virus that causes COVID-19 can spread from people to animals in some
situations
SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19
Fever, chills, cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty
breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea

or uncontrolled asthma are more
likely to be hospitalized from

WHAT TO DO WHEN BEING
INFECTED BY COVID-19?

Stay home except to get medical care.

Separate yourself from other people

As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away
from other people and pets in your home.

Monitor your symptoms

Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider

and local health department. Your local health authorities
may give instructions on checking your symptoms and
reporting information.
WHAT TO DO WHEN BEING
INFECTED BY COVID-19?

Call ahead before visiting your doctor

Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being
postponed or done by phone or telemedicine.

Get Tested
If you have symptoms of COVID-19, get tested. While waiting
for test results, you stay away from others, including staying
apart from those living in your household.
Quarantine
Quarantine is used to keep someone who might
have been exposed to COVID-19 away from
others. Quarantine helps prevent spread of
disease that can occur before a person knows
they are sick or if they are infected with the virus
without feeling symptoms.
When to seek emergency
medical attention
Look for emergency warning signs* for COVID-19. If someone is showing any of
these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately:

Trouble breathing
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion
Inability to wake or stay awake
Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone
What to do to avoid being infected
by COVID-19?

Wear a mask that covers your

nose and mouth to help protect
yourself and others.

Get a COVID-19 vaccine when

COVID-19 | 2020
it is available to you.
Authorized COVID-19 vaccines can
help protect you from COVID-19.
What to do to avoid being infected
by COVID-19?

Stay 6 feet apart from others

who don’t live with you.
Inside your home:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If possible, maintain 6 feet between the
person who is sick and other household
members.
Outside your home:
Put 6 feet of distance between yourself and
people who don’t live in your household.
Remember that some people without
symptoms may be able to spread virus.
What to do to avoid being infected
by COVID-19?

Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

Being in crowds like in restaurants, bars, fitness centers, or

movie theaters puts you at higher risk for COVID-19. Avoid
indoor spaces that do not offer fresh air from the outdoors as
much as possible.
If indoors, bring in fresh air by opening windows and doors, if
