Nature Poetry Made Easy

Follow these steps to create a poem based on the nature object you
selected.
Ø In the space below sketch the object.

Ø In the following space, describe your object. Use all of your senses.
Describe its color, size, texture, smell, sound. Is it shiny or dull? How
does light play on it? Don’t taste it, but you might describe tastes you
associate with it. Be as detailed as you can.

Ø On the lines below list all of the things your object reminds you of. What
other objects, from nature or manufactured, does it resemble? For example, a
dragonfly might seem similar to a sewing needle or a pen. A feather may
remind you of a cat’s tail and a piece of mica may remind you of foil, ice or
newly polished fingernails.

Ø Read your paragraph and as you do, highlight or underline those words
and phrases that stand out – the ones that seem important, interesting,
surprising or just simply appeal to you.

Ø Now take these words and arrange them into the form of a poem. You can
leave words out, add words, change words, repeat words or phrases as
many times as you’d like. It’s your poem. You get to make it how you like it.
You might even try it a couple of different ways.

My poem:

Ø When you are satisfied with your poem, give it a title if you would like and
copy it onto blank or lined paper. Attach your sketch or make a new
drawing to go with it if you want to.
