(Text 1)
M: There is a limit of three books per person.
W: Fine. I’ll be certain to return them on time.
(Text 2)
W: Is there anything I can do for you?
M: Well, I’d like to buy three pairs of socks and a white shirt with short sleeves, please.
(Text 3)
W: Thank goodness! My book is on your desk. I’ve been looking for it for a long time.
M: Well, it was your husband who left it here when he was taking care of the baby.
(Text 4)
M: Excuse me.
W: Yes?
M: You can’t park here.
W: But it’s only a few minutes. I’m waiting for a friend.
M: Well, you can park in the car park around the corner over there.
(Text 5)
W: You seem to be worried. What’s the matter?
M: I want to take a bus to the park, but I don’t have any change on me.
W: Well, I have some. I can give you change for a dollar.
M: Oh, thank you.
(Text 6)
M: Hello, do you have any houses?
W: Yes, something just opened up.
M: What kind of house is it?
W: It’s a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.
M: How much is the rent?
W: The rent is $1,500 per month.
M: And how much is the deposit?
W: The deposit is $500.
M: Are utilities included in the rent?
W: Gas and water are included.
M: Do I have to pay for electricity myself?
W: Yes, electricity is not included in the rent. And you must pay the deposit together with the rent
for the first month.
(Text 7)
M: Kate, where have you been?
W: I’ve been out shopping. Why, Henry?
M: Your parents just called. It’s taken so long but they finally sold their house.
W: Well, it’s about time. Did they get a good price?
M: They didn’t get the price they were asking, but it seems they got a good deal.
W: Well, now they can move into their new place in Florida.
M: Yes, I think it is good that they bought a place there. They will be free from the big house and
cold weather.
W: I hope you’re right.
M: They’ll be OK, Kate. Let’s go to visit them as soon as they are settled.
(Text 8)
W: Where should we take our children this weekend?
M: We could take them to Water World or to Oldfield Adventure Park. They love that sort of thing.
Which would you prefer?
W: Well, how far away are they? I don’t want to spend all day in the car.
M: Well, Water World is pretty close — about one hour. But Oldfield Adventure Park will take
about two and a half hours if we’re lucky.
W: Do they have swimming pools?
M: Water World has a huge fun swimming pool. Our children love animals very much.
W: I really don’t like zoos. I hate seeing animals in cages.
M: Well, there aren’t any animals at Water World.
W: If we are going there, I’m going to take a picnic basket. I know they have restaurants but they
are always expensive. We’d better have a picnic nearby.
M: That’s a good idea. I’ll tell the children.
W: OK.
(Text 9)
M: Mary, are you feeling alright? You’re so quiet tonight.
W: I’m OK. Somehow, I’m feeling uneasy with your colleagues at this party. I regret coming to your
boss’ with you.
M: Ah, I see. You’re always surrounded by young students when you’re on campus. I can see why
you feel a little out of place here.
W: Yeah, I don’t know what to talk about with them.
M: It’s OK, Mary. It’s a natural reaction. Everyone feels that way in an unfamiliar place.
W: Really? Are you feeling out of place now?
M: No, I work with them every day, so I’m pretty comfortable in this kind of setting. But, there are
some places where I do feel out of place — like when I go to parties with your friends on
campus.
W: You feel out of place at student parties? It’s only 2 years since you graduated.
M: I know. But whenever I go back to campus now, I feel really old — and all the students look so
young! I hate to admit it, but I feel out of place when I’m surrounded by students.
W: And I feel out of place here!
M: I’m not used to seeing you acting so shy. You’re usually so outgoing and friendly. Don’t be
afraid to show your true colors.
(Text 10)
Jack goes everywhere with Anna, a 54-year-old secretary. He moves around her office at work
and goes shopping with her. She may think of him as her fourth child and treat him that way,
buying his food, paying his health bills and his taxes, but in fact Jack is a dog.
Jack and Anna live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life
according to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its
people. This level of care costs money.
People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so they aren’t surprised to find that owning a dog
means yet more taxes. Money is spent by the government on dog hospitals and sometimes medical
treatment for a dog that falls ill.
In Sweden, dog owners must pay for any damage their dog does. A Swedish Doghouse Club
official explains what this means: if your dog runs out into the road and gets hit by a passing car,
you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in
the accident.
