W: I won’t be free until my training is over, as I’ve got a new job.
(Text 3)
M: Hello. What can I do for you, ma’am?
W: I want to report a theft that happened at my house two hours ago during my absence.
(Text 4)
W: How can you be late again?
M: But this morning, I got up at six o’clock.
W: That early? I don’t see how you could have missed the school bus. Everyone else was on time.
It’s 8:30 now.
M: But my clock is slow by 2 hours.
(Text 5)
M: Could I have two tickets for some seats near the stage, miss?
W: Sorry. They’re sold out already. We only have Row 10.
M: That’s too bad! I won’t be able to hear the actors from there.
W: Oh, they all have microphones.
(Text 6)
W: Apple Care Service Company. Can I help you?
M: This is an international long-distance call from Finland. Can you put me through to Mr. Brown
in the Human Resources Department?
W: I’m afraid Mr. Brown is in a meeting at the moment.
M: Can I leave a message?
W: Certainly.
M: Can you ask Mr. Brown to call me at 358-0179-312-3135?
W: May I ask who is calling?
M: Alan Peterson of the Nokia Corporation in Helsinki.
W: OK. Mr. Peterson. Can you repeat the last seven digits of your phone number?
M: That’s 312-3135.
W: Thanks. I will tell Mr. Brown to call you as soon as the meeting is over.
M: Thanks. Bye.
(Text 7)
M: It’s a cool day, isn’t it?
W: Yes, nice and cool.
M: Last Wednesday was so hot that I decided to stay inside my room with the air-conditioner
running for 24 hours.
W: I’m glad summer is over. I like autumn best.
M: So do I. It’s neither too hot nor too cold. The sky is clear and blue.
W: It’s a good time to have a picnic. Do you want to have one this weekend?
M: The weatherman says it’s going to rain.
W: I don’t think he’s right. It has rained for two days now.
M: Do you mean it’s only going to be raining till the weekend? Do you not believe the forecast?
W: That’s right. I’m sure we’ll have fine weather for our picnic.
M: Hmm…
(Text 8)
W: Excuse me. Could you spare a few minutes for an interview?
M: I’ll be glad to.
W: What do you plan to do after graduation from college?
M: I don’t know yet. My parents expect me to work in the information technology field.
W: Oh? A popular profession. Is that what your dad does?
M: No. He is an architectural designer.
W: How about yourself? Are you fond of IT?
M: Actually I’m interested in biology. I’ve been dreaming of becoming a biologist since I was very
young.
W: So you are majoring in biology, right?
M: Yeah, but I also minor in computer science. So my degree will include both.
W: You’re a really good student.
M: Am I? Thanks.
W: My last question for you. If you got job offers from companies in both fields, would you choose
biology or IT?
M: Hmm … It’s hard to say. Probably I would follow my childhood dreams.
(Text 9)
W: Excuse me, sir.
M: Yes, ma’am. Can I help you?
W: I’m visiting here for the first time and I want to buy some gifts for my family. Could you suggest
some items that are typical of this region?
M: Well, we have quite a few choices here: postcards with our local scenery, hand-made woolen
hats and some other things over there.
W: Oh. Those are quite nice. I’ll get a woolen hat for Mom and some postcards for Dad. But what
should I get for my son and husband?
M: How old is your son?
W: He’s a teenager. He’s in high school now.
M: What about a Swiss army knife for him and a hand-made leather belt for your husband?
W: Good idea! How much for all these?
M: Let me add it up. A woolen hat, 35 dollars; a set of postcards, five; Swiss army knife, fifteen;
and a leather belt for 23 dollars. All together, 78 dollars.
W: These look very beautiful!
M: By the way, do you need something for yourself? How do you like this silk scarf? It’s on sale at
the moment.
W: Oh? How much is it?
M: 18 dollars each, but thirty for two.
W: OK, why not? I’ll take two.
(Text 10)
In 1903, Henry Ford and eleven business associates began to run the Ford Motor Company
together. For just $28,000, the company sold its first car, a Model A Ford, a month later to a
doctor in Detroit. In 1913, the company developed a new production method called the production
line. It had each worker staying in one place and performing the same task on each car as it
passed by. This revolutionary new production method greatly improved efficiency and was soon
being used in factories around the world.
Henry Ford was the leading manufacturer of American automobiles in the early 1900s. He
revolutionized a young automobile industry and reduced the cost of manufacturing automobiles.
And Ford passed on much of the savings to his customers. In 1908, when the Ford Motor
Company introduced a Model T, it cost 850 dollars. By 1924, production line improvements helped
reduce the price of a Model T to just 290 dollars. An automobile was now within reach of the
average family.
