Astm C 204 - Fineness of Hydraulic Cement by Air-Permeability Apparatus Scope
Astm C 204 - Fineness of Hydraulic Cement by Air-Permeability Apparatus Scope
Scope
This test method covers determination of the fineness of hydraulic cement, using the Blaine
air-permeability apparatus, in terms of specific surface expressed as total surface area in square
centimetres per gram of cement.

Apparatus
Calibration of Apparatus
This includes determination of bulk volume of compacted bed of powder, preparation of samples,
preparation of bed of cement, permeability test and recalibration of the apparatus to be used in this test
method.
Procedure
1. Temperature of Cement - T he cement sample shall be at room temperature when tested.
2. Size of Test Sample - The weight of sample used for the test shall be the same as the used in the
calibration test on the standard sample, with these exceptions: When determining the fineness of
Type Ⅲ or other types of fine ground portland cement whose bulk for this mass is so great that
ordinary thumb pressure will not cause the plunger collar to contact the top of the cell , the weight
of the sample shall be that required to produce a test bed having porosity of 0.530 ± 0.005. When
determining the fineness of materials other than the portland cement, or if for portland cement
sample one of the required porosities cannot be attained, the mass of the sample shall be adjusted
so that the firm, hard bed is produced by the compacting process. In no case, however, shall there
be more than thumb pressure to be used that the plunger “rebounds” from the cell top when
pressure is removed.
3. Preparation of Bed of Cement - Prepare the test bed of cement in accordance with the method.
4. Permeability Test - P erformed with the sample from 0% to 100% relative density, as required. After
compacting thin layers of the prepared granular soil sample in the permeameter, a special
sliding-weight compaction hammer or vibrating tamper provides a higher relative density if
required.
Calculation
Calculate the specific surface values in accordance with the following equations;
m2
EQUATION 1 S = specific surface of the test sample, kg
EQUATION 5 ρ = density of test sample (for portland cement value of 3.15 Mg/
m3 or 3.15 g/ cm3 shall be used)
Ss ρs (bs − εs) √ε3 √T ρ s= density of standard sample used in calibration of apparatus
S=
ρ (b − ε) √ εs3 √T s (assumed to be 3.15 Mg/ m3 or 3.15 g/ cm3 )
Ss ρs (bs − εs) √η s √ε3 √T b s= 0.9, the appropriate constant for standard sample
S=
ρ (b − ε) √ εs3 √T s
√η
Equation 1 and 2 shall be used in calculations of fineness of portland cements compacted to the same
porosity as the standard fineness sample. Equation 1 is used if the temperature of the test sample is within
± 3℃ of the temperature of the calibration test, and Equation 2 is used if the temperature of the test
sample is outside of this range.
Equation 3 and 4 shall be used in calculation of fineness of portland cements compacted to some porosity
other than that of the standard fineness sample used in the calibration test. Equation 3 is used if the
temperature of the test sample is within ± 3℃ of the temperature of the calibration test of the standard
fineness sample, and Equation 4 is used if the temperature of the test sample is outside of this range.
Equation 5 and 6 shall be used in calculation of fineness of materials other than portland cement. Equation
5 shall be used when the temperature of the test sample is within ± 3℃ of the temperature of the
calibration test and Equation 6 is used if the temperature of the test sample is outside of this range.
Round values in cm2 /g to the nearest 10 units (in m2 /kg to the nearest unit).
