The city is one of the oldest municipalities in the Philippines, as it was established by the Augustinians as early as 1572. In June 1901, it was incorporated in the province of via Rizal Act No. 137, and even became the provincial capital until 1975. It then became a part of Metro Manila through Presidential Decree No. 824 in 1975, and was officially converted into a city in 1994.
